Gabe Evans' Constituents Knocking, But Nobody's Home

“Come by the office and we’ll talk.”

As FOX 31’s Gabrielle Franklin reports, residents of freshman GOP Rep. Gabe Evans‘ district are preparing more “People’s Town Halls” for the weekend after Easter to lodge their complaints over Evans’ votes in favor of and general canine loyalty to President Donald Trump as Trump’s reign of dictatorial destruction passes the three-month mark. Although these events are written off by Evans’ sympathizers as partisan contrivances, the frustration residents are experiencing over Evans’ accessibility is supported by evidence:

“The congressional representatives are there to represent the people. The town hall that we had on the telephone was not the people telling Gabe Evans how they would like to be represented. It was Gabe Evans telling the people who they should agree with him. You know that is really unsatisfactory. It doesn’t demonstrate that he is willing to hear us,” said Karissa, a CD8 constituent from Greeley. She said has called the congressman’s office several times and has not heard back from him via email.

“He says that he is saving money because he does not have staff at his Colorado offices to answer the doors. He’s not answering the phone. [Pols emphasis] If he is really not hearing from his constituents, then he is really not representing us. So we feel that he fails on that account,” Karissa said. “Me and a few other constituents have got together our own town hall. Our town hall is supposed to be representative of the people from across the political spectrum to come and share their voices. And we’ve invited Gabe Evans very kindly and cordially to come and attend, to listen because that’s what a town hall should be: it should be the representative listening to the people.” The People’s Town Hall  will take place on April 26th at The Moxi Theater in Greeley.

In response, Gabe Evans directed constituents to his website, where one can obtain the addresses to Evans’ district offices and stop by any time:

“As far as accessibility, again, anyone that wants to have a productive conversation, and even if you don’t, you can always reach out to us: Gabeevans.house.gov is the website. And that will have the two district offices,” Evans said when asked about constituents not being able to reach him. [Pols emphasis]

Well folks, here’s what happened when a resident took Evans up on the invitation to visit his Greeley office:

In an effort to save taxpayer money, we do not have a full-time employee at this location at this time.

Is the problem sinking in yet? Gabe says if you need your voice heard to come on down to his district offices! But “in an effort to save taxpayer money,” at least one of Rep. Evans two in-district office has no full-time employees. That is about as textbook a definition of giving your constituents the runaround as we have ever seen, and as readers remember Cory Gardner made that a tall order.

It’s worth remembering that local congressional offices do more than just take grief from angry constituents. Members of Congress field all kinds of requests for assistance from constituents, from help with the IRS and other federal agencies to applying for federal grants, passports, help at foreign embassies–the list goes on and on. In Colorado’s we’ve had some experience with members of Congress who were more interested in showboating than constituent services–here’s looking at you, Lauren Boebert–in which our state’s Democratic Sens. John Hickenlooper and Michael Bennet were available to pick up the slack.

If you live in Colorado’s Eighth Congressional District and and find yourself need any of the constituent services your congressman is supposed to provide, visit your Senator instead.
