Colorado's Version of Jesse Ventura

UPDATE: We got an e-mail from the Rocky Mountain News that said we can link to their story about Paul Fiorino and can use excerpts, but we can’t use their picture. That makes this story considerably less funny (click here to see the picture on the News’ Web site), but we’ll push on anyway. Here’s a Colorado Pols artist’s rendering of the original photo:

Okay, back to the post. Paul Fiorino is a former wrestler who is hoping to become Colorado’s next governor as an Independent candidate. He’s kind of like Jesse Ventura, only…not.

Some highlights from the Rocky Mountain News:

“This is a campaign of bringing forth life,” said Fiorino, who filed his intent to run with the Secretary of State’s Office last month. “We need inspiration.”…

…Fiorino, 51, grew up in Parker when it was a one-road town. He played football and wrestled at Douglas County High School before discovering the world of dance one magical day in the early 1970s.

“My mom brought me to the Denver Civic Ballet and I didn’t want to go in,” he said. “When I did, I saw men and women jumping around and lifting each other and flying through the air. It was incredible. It was a moment . . . I’ll never forget.”

It’s too bad we aren’t in Ventura’s Minnesota, because then Fiorino would be running against Jonathon Sharkey, the gubernatorial candidate of the Vampyres, Witches and Pagans Party (by the way, is that really how you spell ‘Vampyres?’) If we were in Minnesota, we could have Fiorino and Sharkey wrestle for the office of governor. Or they could dance for it.

  1. Shouldn’t Fiorino consider running for the State Board of Education?

Who knows, maybe he’d give Jared Polis a run for his money.

    Okay, bad example…

  2. Well, I actually like your rendering better. Nice drawing.

Too bad you can’t use their photo, though. This is the chance you take, I guess, building a website around reprinting local news articles.

  3. I dunno, PR.  I think the drawing as it is emanates a minimalist simplicity that encourages the viewer to “paint” in his or her own life experiences.  In other words, it sucks ;^)

  4. “I refuse to vote for someone as colorless and two-dimensional as that picture illustrates.”
You voted for Bill Owens and Wayne Allard, didn’t you?  Or maybe Diana DeGette and Ken Salazar?

  5. Anyone actually bothering to read the Rocky’s entire article, instead of the snarky out-of-context quotes here, will see that Paul would provide a credible challenge to either Both Ways Bob, or to Mad Marc. Too bad he’s a registered Independent.

  6. Don’t let it get you down, Beast.  Coloradopols has the world’s clunkiest interface and it hangs up for a very long time.  I find it works best to post once, and then just click the red box in the upper right corner and go off the service. You can click right on.  Sometimes it will post in a few minutes, sometimes in several hours.  But I think I’ve only had once when it didn’t post at all.  I don’t think the problem is firefox, I’ve used it on this board a few times and it works as well as AOL, which i usually use.
By the way, Beast of Bourbon, that’s a great nom de computer.

  7. The guy is a dancer….the ultimate athlete.
    Doesn’t Fiorino rhyme with Torino?
I’m sure he is more than capable to lead
our State, and get us dancing again.
