Can anyone remember what they were doing at the moment the space shuttle blew up 20 years ago?
I was working for the same glass shop I work for now, and was installing a new storefront in a auto repair shop.
Funny how you can remember exactly what you were doing when a national disaster happens, 20 years later eh?
I was in my third grade class watching the liftoff on TV. It was a small town in Kansas, and after the shuttle exploded, the teacher turned the TV off. Everyone at the school took the rest of the day off.
I was watching it on TV in the library of my school… I think in 8th grade… and it was just me watching. I saw the explosion live, but had no idea what had happened. Was this some sort of joke? Was I seeing a live piece or footage? It wasn’t until the comentator (Jennings, I think) started talking that I understood what had happened. Then the librarian saw the resulting (and repeating) footage and he turned the TV louder and everyone started to gather around to listen closer.
I am reminded of 9-11, where I also saw the live footage of the second plane on TV and thinking “this isn’t possibly real”. It’s some trick of the camera.
I was a first-grader in an Arvada elementary school. The older grades got to watch the launch live, and we were scheduled to watch a rerun later in the day. Needless to say, that didn’t happen. It was many of my peers’ first encounter with tragedy.
I didn’t get to see it live as I was working but the radio was on and they broke in for the news of the disaster. I did get to see the second plane hit on 9/11 though.
I was watching it live in my living room (was in college and didn’t have classes until afternoon that day). My roommate was very interested in astronomy/space travel and was asleep. He woke up when I started screaming.
Quick point, Reagan was quoting the poem “High Flight” here. Not to take away from the Gipper, but he was quoting someone else. Regardless, that was a very memorable speech. Miss ya Gipper!
I saw it live too. They kept flashing back to the teacher’s parents’ looking up. It was a sickening feeling.
I am very happy we got to have our own little tribute to the Challenger disaster, but there was some political news today.
Jennifer Mello confirmed at a HD6 meeting this morning that she is definitely running for SD32, which suggests that Andrew Romanoff is definitely not running.
I also expect we will here an announcement from Fran Coleman very soon. There are reportedly a few others looking at it, but I am not how much chance they stand with these two in there.
Out of the gate, Mello is looking like the one to beat, but we will get a much better sense where the two stand on 8 Apr at the county assembly.

My generation had been hardened by the assasinations of JFK, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. We had become inured to the day after day after night after night front line, living color t.v. reports of the carnage that was Viet Nam. We experienced, once again, the day after day after night after night vivid images of America’s great cities in flames. The tragedy of the Challenger was shocking–for me and probably for most of my generation–but it wasn’t a “defining” moment and, no, I don’t remember where I was or what I was doing.

Probably not, Scoop. If someone was opposed to Lamm, the thing to do would be to raise expectations so there would be dissapointment on the news.
It is Lamm, not Perlmutter, who benefits from lowered expectations.

I was at the Be the Change event yesterday. Each Congressional Candidate gave a four minute speech. Peggy beat Ed and Herb, no question. She was more confident, had better points, and was very charismatic. Not to take away from Ed or Herb, they were fine, but Peggy was on a different level. On a side note, Bill Winter candidate for CD-6 is EXTREMELY FORMIDABLE. Even just two months ago, I would have conceded CD- 6, but not now. WOW…hold the press…

Jen is the house district captain of HD6A (the portion in SD32) and Fran of course is the Rep of HD1. Each of these districts covers roughly half the senate district.
Mello made a remarkable showing in a statewide race for CU Regent in 2004 despite being thrown into the race at the last second due to a resignation by the Dem. incumbent/candidate. Her ability to raise money and campaign hard showed through then and I expect it will again here. Now she has the time to actually plan a campaign a bit.
Coleman has pretty strong support in HD1 and has been making efforts to get the support of the gay community (a large faction in the HD6 portion of SD32 which includes the Cheesman Park area). Some here have suggested Fran is not well liked in HD1, but that has not been my experience when I have worked there on statewide/citywide efforts. But if it is true, that gives Mello a definite advantage. The fact that Fran has not had a primary and 4 people waited til term limits took her out to run for the seat also suggests she may be strong in that part of the district.
At this point I am giving the advantage to Mello because of her proven abilities in past elections. Of the two, Jen is also by far the better speaker. Their legislative styles will likely be very diffrent. Mello is more of a policy wonk whereas Coleman is more into the nuts of bolts of how a process works.
Ditto on EM Rosa’s comments. I should take my Geritol, a product EM has probably never heard of.
Thanks Dan, you are, as usual, a wealth of knowledge. Do you know much about the Centennial area, HD 37? It looks like the top contenders there are Habig and Swalm, both R’s. Is there a declared D and how do you see the R primary race shaping up?

Darth –I was at the Be the Change event too and had a completely different opinion. Perlmutter was better on Iraq, and Peggy couldn’t explain why she supported Owens in 2002 and while she benefitted by a nice send-up, I thought Perlmutter was much stronger. I like Peggy, but she has no base in the district (she is from Boulder), and her campaign is only spoiling Dem chances in the 7th.
Also, I think it’s telling that Gary Hart (who was fantastic) is supporting Perlmutter.
I too was at the BTC event. What a turn-out! BTC is a well organized grass-roots machine.

Integrity matters and after reading the Jody Strogoff editorial that was passed out at the event, I think Peggy Lamm hasn’t told the truth. In an election where ethics is going to matter, I am one Democrat who will be supporting Perlmutter.

Hey, Scoop –what’s PATHETIC is Peggy Lamm saying her support for Bill Owens was a response to a pollster even though her name appeared TWICE on Democrats for Owens press releases.
It’s suprising I even remember this, being only 4 at the time. I was at the babysitters house & all us kids were watching the cool rocket go to space. Then it broke up into fire. I didn’t really understand why the babysitter was crying & shut the TV off. All she said was that several nice people died in the fire.
On another note, I thought Paccione stole the show at the BTC event as far as speakers are concerned. Bill Winter was excellent as well.
As for the Perlmutter vs Lamm, I like them both. I do not live in the 7th. I only care that a Dem takes the seat. That said, I think during the summer at the BTC Ed Schultz event (end of July) Lamm had the edge in the head to head speakathon. At yesterday’s BTC event I would say that Perlmutter came off with the better speech & message.

As I noted in another thread, Chris Romer is planning a run for the Grossman seat. Also, Josh Hanfling, formerly a registered R, will run as an unaffiliate. He will bring big bucks to the campaign and could be a factor against anyone but Romer (the name is still magic).
