The Fax of the Year

From the Associated Press:

New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine was in critical condition Friday but expected to recover after his SUV crashed into a guard rail while heading to a meeting between Don Imus and the Rutgers women’s basketball team…

…The crash on the Garden State Parkway broke the governor’s leg, six ribs, his sternum and fractured a vertebrae. Authorities were still searching for a pickup truck driver whose actions were blamed for causing it.

Corzine, 60, did not suffer any brain damage in the crash. But he won’t be able to resume his duties as governor for several days, if not weeks, and he won’t walk normally for months, Dr. Robert Ostrum said performing surgery on the governor Thursday night at Cooper University Hospital.

Senate President Richard Codey became acting governor Thursday evening after being notified by fax from Corzine’s office that the governor had been injured. [Pols emphasis]

Wow. Can you imagine receiving that fax at your home? What did it say?

Dear Mr. Codey,

You’re the governor now. Good luck.

  1.   To borrow a phrase from Joan Crawford, don’t screw with Dick Codey, this aint his first time at the rodeo.  He was acting governor from 2004 to 2005 after the resignation of Jim McGreevey after McGreevey came out of the closet.
Codey is one of the few N.J. pols who has favorable numbers which actually exceed his unfavorable numbers.  He was apparently considering a run for the U.S. Senate seat Corzine gave up to run for Guv but opted not to do so.

  2. “The accident marks the third straight time a New Jersey governor has broken a leg while in office. McGreevey broke his leg in 2002 during a nighttime walk on the beach, and Christie Whitman broke her leg while skiing in the Swiss Alps in 1999.”
