The Denver Post’s Jeri Clausing added considerably to discussion about Marilyn Musgrave’s CD-4 seat in her weekly Affairs of State column:
More change may loom
[Senate President Joan] Fitz-Gerald is not the only state senator looking at a potential congressional run.
Standing with her last week at a podium for Gov. Bill Ritter’s signing of a law seeking to prevent the Army from taking more southeastern Colorado ranchland was Sen. Brandon Shaffer.
Although Piñon Canyon is far from the Democrat’s district in the Longmont-Boulder County area, he stood with Ritter and Fitz-Gerald to rail against the military expansion plans.
Shaffer, considered one of the Democrats’ rising stars, admits he is considering a run for the 4th Congressional District seat held by Republican Marilyn Musgrave.
In fact, he is headed to Washington, D.C., this week for meetings on the prospect.
“I am taking a very serious look at it,” he said.
We’ll be updating the Big Line in due course to reflect many developments, including this one. Thank you for adjusting your underwear pre-emptive of any unpleasant bunching.

As further stated there, “The Dems need to look hard to find a great candidate to take on the odious Marilyn Musgrave.” Truer words were never spoken. Whether Shaffer is or is not the person to be that great candidate, time will tell. [Don’t know him personally.] But I am in full agreement Musgrave is odious. Her removal from office is a goal worth pursuing.
..in that unlikely event, who would replace her, I wonder.
….and his crusade against Jared Polis and A-41 is sure one way to earn an endorsement from Joan, should she step down.
Brandon Shaffer is an outstanding candidate. He works tirelessly for his current District and is a stand-up guy. He’s also a veteran and GETS the concept of serving your country. We could do far worse (in fact, right now, we ARE doing far worse!!!).
Brandon Schaffer may be popular in Longmont, but not even Democrats in the rest of CD-4 know who he is. Eric Eidsness has far more name recognition, and has been working hard for months to make friends inside the county parties. Plus, Schaffer is an establishment liberal who doesn’t fit the district, and the voters will get him confused with Bob Schaffer, who the Democrats are going to spend $20 million trashing.
Eric Eidsness is the choice for CD-4, even if Schaffer is a favorite of the Denver Democrat establishment. The establishment DCC has shown they will screw over their own candidates anyway, so what we need is a genuine independent outsider who will excite the entire district! We don’t need another establishment insider. We need Eric Eidsness!
Eric, don’t you have better things to do with your time than market yourself on here?
Your arguments against Schaffer are laughable, there is no such thing as the DCC and your argument that an outsider is needed is not gonna win you either primary.
When he was first running, he came to my door and was so charming and convincing that I voted for him in the primary and even sent him some $$. He shows up at everything, full of energy to answer questions and talk to people. His newsletters are interesting and informative. He’s accomplished a bunch in the lege.
But I don’t see how he can win in CD 4. I don’t see any Dem winning in CD 4, I guess. And Brandon Shaffer is my kind of Dem, meaning he is not on the right end of the party. I do think he is going places; I’m just not convinced that is the right place – unless he just wants to raise his name recognition for some future plan of his?
I hear this often: the idea that a congressman or senator is trying to raise their name id in an attempt to run for a different office or to get noticed nationally. How likely is it that a state senator makes the jump to a bigger office?
I just realized something. Emma, I need to apologize. It seems that everytime (at least two times) I respond to your posts its to take issue with something that has nothing to do you. In fact, I agree with your posts for the most part, but I find a bone to pick with each one because I am so bothered by terms I hear elsewhere, and, unfortunately, you make the remark at my boiling point. So, I apologize. Im a nice guy, really.
Just a couple of recent cases in point.
Point taken, but here is the difference: both of those guys ran for open seats. One came in with a huge, repeat huge advantage in registration, and the other ran for a seat that is arguably the most registrationally diverse seat in the state. Conversely, our boy is going up against a seated congresswoman, potentially, and she’s got the registration advantage.
there’s also DeGette, Udall, John Salazar, Musty, Allard, Bob Schaffer who served in the legislature immediately before going to D.C.
Did any of them run for an office where the odds where stacked against them with the intention of running for a different, possibly higher, office before that? (I am asking seriously)
I hadn’t even noticed anything Mr. T. You’re doing fine AFAIAC.
I can’t wait to see the DemocRATS eat each other alive in a primary, so that Conservative Hero Marilyn Musgrave will sail to re-election!!!!
With Betsy Markey and hop skip and a jumper Eric Eidsness in it, it’s going to be a bloodbath. LOL And now Angie Paccione is buying websites!!!!

They’ll never learn. The fourth district is Republican, has always been Republican, and is going to stay Republican!
but I am all in favor of contesting every district. You never know when a Repub is going to be indicted or found to have a seamy scandal brewing (Dems too, but lately predominately Repubs!)
It is no wonder Angie is registering new web site names and will run again; she can’t get a job and needs the money she takes as a candidate! When is the last time the woman had a real job?
That’s just the small town snark talking.
not long ago, the Dems couldn’t recruit a sacraficial lamb to run in that district. Something has changed……
It is amazing. Musgrave’s margin of victory has gone from 12 to 6 to 2.5 points.
Blood in the water. Who’s the biggest shark?
I hope Angie Paccione runs again. She’s a born competitor and a great Democrat. She put Musgrave on the ropes in 2006. She needs to finish her off in 2008.
http://www.eric4cong…
a “flip flopping Republican” and “Waffling Independent” as well? Go home every way eric.
Keep dreaming. Anyway, Jay Fawcett and Bill Winter were both Fighting Dems….
I really like Shaffer for all the reasons listed above.
I don’t see him representing the eastern plains. He is more comfortable with Longmont/Boulder folk than with ranchers and farmers.
He’s also introduced some renewable energy bills that were bad for the eastern plains. This session he had three(?) that either died in appropriations or he PI’d himself.
If he’s shooting himself in the foot in the Eastern Plains, then is he seriously considering?
I’m just thinking out loud here.
He may have more impact in CD4 than I know. I don’t think he’s shooting himself in the foot, but needs to tread carefully when talking about ethanol, farm/feed issues and prairie dogs 🙂
people are politically geographic. Can you see Weld County and the Eastern Plains being represented by someone from Boulder County? The Eastern Plains doesn’t have that many votes but it would provide a repeatable campaign slogan which could affect the unaffiliated in larger counties.
Geographically, the best location to be from in CD-4 is Weld Co. I know this has nothing to do with a quality candidate but it does mess with electability.
but if he has the right appeal it won’t matter that he’s from Longmont. Being from Denver didn’t hurt Bill Ritter.
“a Boulder liberal” runnin’ in CD4 is like Lamborn running in Denver.
This can’t be a good idea.
I’m sure that’s how Musgrave and co. will play it. If it isn’t so (Longmont wasn’t Boulder, at least back in the 90s it wasn’t) then it won’t stick.
He should stay in his job–he’s doing great. I don’t think even Jesus could beat Muskrat.
And it didn’t make sense then. Musgrave won with the lowest percentage of victory in the country, just over 46%, and with a very low margin of victory – just around 2.5%, I believe.
She’s not unbeatable, and that’s why she’s scrambling right now. The question is: Will this scrambling raise her positives, or have voters already made up their mind about her?
Heck, today Musgrave has a LTE in the Fort Collins Coloradoan arguing (poorly) with a constituent’s LTE about her healthcare record. What’s the point of that unless she’s really worried?
Brilliant move (not) by the Dems to put a “B. Shaffer” up for the 4th CD in 2008.
Lets see; as the DSCC or some well placed 527 is kicking the crap out of potential GOP US Senate candidate Bob Shaffer in a statewide media buy (much will to be focused in the Fort Collins/ Greeley area due to the growing importance demographically of this section of the state) the Dems expect this to have little or no effect on their 4th CD candidate Brandon Shaffer? Oh My God, you have to be kidding me! Get a clue!
Bob Shaffer, Brandon Shaffer, this will never work! Both from the 4th CD, one formally representing the 4th CD, the other wanting to represent the 4th CD. Both federal candidates in 2008, both having to place a statewide media buy. Please some one at the DSCC step up and put an end to this madness.
