Colorado AFL-CIO Endorses Fitz-Gerald in CD-2

  • by: Colorado Pols

In a Democratic primary, there are a handful of big endorsements that carry a lot of weight. Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald, one of three candidates in CD-2, just picked up one of them. According to a press release:

The Colorado AFL-CIO, a federation of labor unions representing 75,000 workers in the state, has endorsed Senate President Joan Fitz Gerald in her bid for Congressional District two.

“Joan has a long history and track record of advocating on behalf of workers. Our leaders and thousands of members around the state know that,” said Rick Bender, Trustee for the Colorado AFL-CIO. “She’s fought for affordable health care, worked to protect people’s retirement, helped to bring well paying jobs to our state and worked to ensure our kids get the education they deserve.  We know she’ll do the same in Washington as the next Congresswoman for CD 2.”

The unions that make up the AFL-CIO include; communication workers, machinists, flight attendants, public workers at the municipal, state and federal levels, janitors, hotel workers and building and construction workers.

“We know that the people of CD 2 want a champion and Joan Fitz-Gerald is just that,” Bender added.  “ It will be hard work and a grassroots campaign will get her over the top.  The thousands of working families and retirees who make up the AFL-CIO will work to educate and mobilize our members to support her.”

The Colorado AFL-CIO normally doesn’t make primary endorsements this early in a race (nevermind that they don’t even have a President of the organization right now) so this is an impressive show of early strength for Fitz-Gerald. The biggest advantage Fitz-Gerald has over fellow candidates Jared Polis and Will Shafroth is her own political acumen, which is on display with this endorsement; she just pulled a big endorsement out from under Polis and Shafroth before the race even really got started.

  1. As long as she’s the Senate president most CO special interest group will line up for her.  Not sure the AFL really carries that much weight in this race, and they may even hurt if this becomes a special interest themed campaign.

    1. This endorsement, so early into the primary, actually does a number of other things.

It shuts down multiple fundraising avenues by putting out the word early that Fitzgerald is the “favored daughter,” and it may very well push Shafroth out of the primary altogether, leaving this a 2-way race.

It also reinforces the meme that Polis and his campaign are dead in the water. Doesn’t do much for rallying volunteers, either.

Overall, I’d say this damages Shafroth the most and leaves a mark on Polis’ campaign.

      1. Why would it push Shafroth out of the race? You think his base was the unions and now he lost it? The AFL-CIO isn’t an environmental group you know…

        1. It’s the impression that it gives, that there is overwhelming support for Fitzgerald. Campaign contributions and volunteers that this kind of endorsement usually generates cannot be overstated.

And I’m pretty sure he doesn’t give a fuck about their environmental views when he’s hitting them up for campaign contributions and they’re sending their money to Fiztgerald instead.

          1. I think I know what you mean. The only difference is that it seems like she is getting union support, which everyone knew was going to happen. There are other major interests in CD-2. I’m certain Jared and Will both understood this when entering the race.

            1. Jared and Will and Joan are all very aware, I’m guessing, of who the major players are and who have the $$$.

If this endorsement is legitimate, and I see some doubts expressed about that downthread, it really doesn’t do any favors to Shafroth, whose campaign just seems sort of stuck right now. If he can’t convince folks that he has a real shot at winning the primary, the checkbooks are going to go right back into the pockets. People don’t like doling out dollars to a lost cause, even if they love his environmental stance.

I guess the tell tell sign will be what everybody raises in the quarter. That usually gives you some idea of who has support and how much.

          2. they don’t command the voting loyality of their members they once did especially in a primary and their membership is dwindlying.  Labor is only good for a handful of max checks, but the never ending bitching that they do almost makes it not even worth it to get their endorsement in the first place.

            1. This time I agree with you and it does nothing to give itself more bite. A few denver city council races do not do that. The membership here does not even volunteer… they do member to member but not volunteer. I moved here from Chicago and even the outcast races ask and get 100 or 200 labor folks each event to volunteer and canvass.

The membership needs to really start giving up it’s time and getting folks elected that will support them and cd2 is not the place to make the stand.

              cd 4, 5 , 6 are

            2. If you had researched that you would have found that most union members DO support the candidates their unions endorse, but I realize that is a common anti-labor talking point.  Unions have declined, but we are far from dead.  And if collective bargaining laws were not stacked against labor membership would be much higher. It is another falsehood that people do not want to join unions. When given the choice without their jobs being threatened, they often join.  Regarding another post on here, the phrase “special interest group” is used by people in all parties to discredit their opponents. The phrase could apply to most people. Every single person involved in politics is a member of some organization. This term is misleading and needs to be retired. The comment that it would have mattered if the state fed had a President is  just flat wrong.  All three candidates were interviewed by a group of members and every affliated local was invited.

              1. You tell me to check my facts yet you site none yourself.

Labor has lost its way and it will never get it back if all it does is whine and throw tantrum like we’ve seen over the Denver DNC.  Maybe if Labor could figure out a way to add value back to people’s lives and focus on that they would grow.

                1. We have the records and statistics.  I do not expect to convince you, but nationwide labor “knocked on the doors of 8.25 million union voters. Made 30 million phones calls to union voters. Mailed 20 million pieces of mail to union homes and distributed 14 million worksite fliers”  The record shows that most of our members supported our endorsed candidates.  Those specific number differ for each union, but Colorado is no exception. The conflict over the DNC is about the basic principle that an injury to one is an injury to all.  It is about saying it is not ok to bust unions. Unions did not create the situation, we responded to it. We are not trying block progress, we are not to make sure it is not overlooked. Collective bargaining clearly helps those people employed under fair contracts. Those facts are everywhere and undisputed. Why is ok for businesses to collectively bargain with each other and not ok for employees? Anybody who truly believes in the democratic principles of checks and balances, separation of powers, due process and equal justice under the law support collectively bargaining and the labor movement. I know it is easier to stand with power and wealth and rail about competition, but the free market does not and should not negate collective bargaining with employees. Why should Democracy end in the workplace? On previous posts I have cited examples of where we are lagging far behind most countries in when it comes to workplace RIGHTS.

              2. If ppl like joining unions AND they do not because of management threatening their jobs, then why are the unions trying to make initial elections be

                1. one vote, rather than 2.
                2. All votes be open so that everybody can see how you voted?

If it was really what you said, then closed voting is the right way to go? As to the double election, that probably does favor the company. But it seems fair to me.

              3. Having fought for and won so many laws and policies that we all take for granted, the need for unions has diminished.  A second factor is that the generation that fought for most of these benefits is dead or dying.  The current work force never had to fight for rights like my father and father-in-law did.

People like Grover Norquist gloat that the New Deal generation is about dead and that gives his distortions much greater power.

            1. I moved, in January, both my business and my home and haven’t really come up for air much, since. I only moved 5 miles, but I had a hell of a winter, to put it mildly. Moved my house in the middle of the blizzard in January and then moved the business in the middle of 90 mph winds.

Had to drop about ten grand into the new facility for the business and have been working my ass off ever since. So in other words, I’ve stayed off the local blogs and been doing what I am supposed to be doing…you know, working for a living. 🙂

It’s good to hear from you. How are you? All is well with you?

              Is Gecko still here?

                1. listed that he’s logged on sometimes but come to think of it, I haven’t seen any comments from him.

God, that sucks. The whole gang is gone. I rarely, if ever, agreed with them, but I just loved sparring with them and they were all such fun. I can’t believe BMR and Gecko are gone. They were a staple on this site.

Bummer. God, I feel old, all of a sudden.

I’m glad to see you and Lauren, Aristotle, Phoenix Rising, and a few other familiars are still here.

                    1. She’s a single aging movie star who drinks too much and hangs out at the Pub talking politics until the wee hours of the morning.  (Oh yeah, and looks like Angelina Jolie)

However; her alter ego is a LONG time happily married tee- totler who goes to bed at 10:00 PM.  Gotta love the blogosphere, eh?

I hope that doesn’t mean you’re leaving now Car 31:)

                  1. although I do miss that bunch (except BMR was mostly before my time, and Iron Mike posts something about once a season…)

Glad to know that somebody likes my posts. I’m dyin’ on the polster of the week poll… 😉

              1. Remember the good old days when we threw back the brewskies at our Publicrat meetings and solved all the world’s problems?  Those were the days:)

                Happy to see ya again!

        2. Granted CO-2 is not just Boulder but Boulder is the largest part population-wise.

And what decides elections here is the plan-Boulder endorsement (100% in most City Council elections). And they are very very very environmentally focused.

Shafroth’s base definitely beats the unions here. What will be interesting is to see how the Boulder powers that be go.

  2. It’s obvious that the AFL-CIO doesn’t have a president right now.  If they did, they never would have endorsed in this race.  That’s just bad politics.

    1. All three of them would support unions. I am floored by the fact they jumped in so early. The Unions may hate 41… but

      Amendment 41
      YES  938888 62.57 %
      NO  561646 37.43 %

Normal voters do not care… and it passed by a huge vote total.  Come on people we may hate it but 41 to the normal voters will go way their heads.

  3. Ummm, what? Where are you getting these press releases? The AFL-CIO convention isn’t until next year. I dismissed the AFSCME one because I don’t know their endorsement process…but here I do. Maybe the executive committee suggested that she be endorsed, but the member unions have to vote for it to be official. Pols, please explain. I’m starting to lose faith in your intentions. Is someone on Pols staff on or vying for a job with Fitz-Gerald?

      1. Do you really think we would just make up a press release? Give us a break. You guys need some new conspiracy theories. It’s ALWAYS one of two criticisms when we post something that someone doesn’t like:

        1. Pols is a liberal/conservative blog with a liberal/conservative agenda.
        2. Pols is trying to get a job by posting something.

Seriously, give it a rest. Maybe you don’t like the news, but we don’t make the news.

        1. Yes I was making an accusation but it wasn’t that you were making the press release up. What I was implying is that you got the release from an unofficial source. You know, the type that would call CD-2 “Congressional District two.”

As for the vying for a job thing, I was basing it on what I consider an obvious slant that you have whether you believe it or not…not that you were making the release up.

Last, I think your slant affected your decision in posting a story without adequately checking the facts…NOT that you are lying. I fully believe that someone from the Colorado AFL-CIO sent you a “press release.” In fact, it is possible that person even believes that what the executive committee decides is an official endorsement. What I am saying is that it is NOT an official endorsement. A simple phone call on Monday should prove me wrong if you are correct.

As to Feely in 2002…I don’t know about that. First of all, the AFL-CIO is nothing other than a group of unions. Who, other than those unions, would decide an endorsement? In addition, an endorsement in 2002 makes sense, as would an endorsement in 2008. An endorsement in 2007 does not.

Listen, I could be wrong…but think about it. Like you said, the AFL-CIO endorsement is a fairly big deal, even in CD-2. Don’t you think it would be a big enough deal for other news outlets to discuss it? Maybe even Colorado Confidential? Anybody? I would think that anyone who received this press release, if official, would publish it. Does that mean that the PRESS release went only to you?

Once again, to be clear…something fishy is going on and you bit. If I turn out to be wrong, then so be it. But everything I see leads me to think that at the best, you guys were duped. It was the “political acumen” comment that made me say the thing about vying for a job. It sounds better than most politician’s press secretaries could write. Reread your last paragraph and you will see what I mean.

        2. The fake was referring to the fact that I don’t think it is a legitimate offical AFL-CIO release, not that you guys made it up.

        3. You know you’re a liberal/conservative blog with a liberal conservative agenda trying to get a job by posting something, so stop acting all defensive.

    1. with a vote of the Executive Board.  It does not have to wait for the COPE convention.  The normal process is to do final endorsements at the COPE convention, but it can be circumvented by a vote of the E-Board.

Now, having said that, the situation in Colorado seems to be different currently.  The State Federation is under trusteeship which means that in many instances the normal governing procedures are set aside.

I have no idea whether the E-Board voted on this or not (though as noted above in normal circumstances they have the power to vote an early endorsement), since it is entirely possible that the trustees (who are acting in lieu of the President and other governing structures) may have the power to make this endorsement on their own.

I will have to check with friends in labor who serve on the E-Board.

None the less, it is probably moot as I am sure the
e-board would have voted an early endorsement anyway.

    1. But different demographics in the district. CD7 more joe sixpack less eco friendly latte sleave.

I think JFG has the organizatioal and institutional support to win the primary handily.

JP has the money, but I’m not convinced of his organizational strength–I’ve always felt he didn’t get that much bang for his buck.  He had institutional strength, but 41 eroded much of it and I’m not sure 41 generated enough public goodwill to compensate.

WS don’t know him, that in itself may be a problem.  Aside from eco-advocacy groups, what is his name recognition amongst the rank and file?
