As announced in an email from LGBT advocacy organization One Colorado today:
The Colorado Civil Union Act has been scheduled for its first hearing — Wednesday, January 23, at 1:30 p.m. in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Civil unions is a critical piece of legislation for our community. If passed, it will provide committed same-sex couples in the state with the protections they need to take care of their families.
We have a lot of support for the bill in the Senate Judiciary Committee — thanks to your incredible work during the election. But you can be sure that opponents of equality will flood the Capitol before Wednesday’s vote…
Passage of civil unions was assured, of course, after the extraordinary actions of the GOP House majority last year to kill the bill became a central 2012 campaign issue, and Democrats retook control of the House in the November general elections by a strong majority.
Fait accompli or no, it’s a popular question today at the Capitol whether “Anus Granny” will make another appearance Wednesday.

Ah, Anus Granny. It wouldn’t be a civil unions debate without her. Keep it real!
Congratulations! This was what Democrats campaigned on and they should be proud.
Still I wonder…why didn’t this pass for years when Democrats were in charge of everything? I’ve never seen a good explanation for that, only how evil Republicans are for not passing it. Why the double standard, libs?
Oh, the dope said “pass”. I’m about to post my roast cabbage recipe
Yeah right. If it had passed any sooner, you’d be screaming that it was voted down in 2006. The delay also coincided with the change in public opinion from Ref I to the present.
But who am I kidding? Haters will find a way to oppose this no matter what.
Welcome back!!!!
As to the delay, you can only lead from so far ahead. Get too far out and you lose people. It sucks but improving civilization has to happen in steps.
It’s like gun control. In 40 years people will wonder at the widespread ownership of military weapons. But it will take time to get there.
It’s an issue whose time has come — and about passed. Frankly, I am not excited at this half-way house to full marriage equality. However, since the Colorado Constitution specifically bans same -sex marriage, this is the best we can do for now.
eventually, we will repeal that provision or the U.S. Supreme Court will say that all such marriage discrimination rules are violations of the 14th Amendment.
I agree V. Civil unions is just a halfway spot. I hope they will also put Amendment 43 on the ballot for repeal and go all the way
Why settle for 1/2-way?
Why not go for changing the CO Constitution?
I am really afraid that “civil unions” will delay full equality by a decade.
