At Least He's Not Your State Representative

UPDATE: Irony not lost on Wonkette:

We are assuming this will be the first case of the NRA and Gun Owners of America agreeing that this law-abiding citizen should not have access to a gun!

It should be an easy call, being a Democrat.

As the Las Vegas SunВ reported yesterday:

A Democratic assemblyman is in jail, arrested for threatening Democratic Speaker-elect Marilyn Kirkpatrick, according to North Las Vegas Police and Democratic sources familiar with the situation.

Assemblyman Steven Brooks, 40, of North Las Vegas made threats to harm a public official Saturday afternoon, police said in a news release Sunday morning. A source said he was arrested with a loaded gun after threatening to shoot Kirkpatrick.

Kirkpatrick and witnesses who corroborated the allegation prompted police to begin searching for Brooks. About 5:30 p.m., Brooks was seen driving in the area of Carey Avenue and Mt. Hood Street, where he was taken into custody without incident during a traffic stop.

Another Democratic source with knowledge of the situation said Brooks publicly threatened to harm Kirkpatrick because he was unhappy with the committee assignments given to him by Kirkpatrick. The 2013 Legislature begins Feb. 4.

It should go without saying that this is not the way for a legislator to win friends and influence people, let alone get reconsideration regarding a plum committee assignment for which one has been passed over. The Sun reports that Asm. Steven Brooks’ behavior had been, according to fellow caucus members, growing “erratic” recently, and before the facts are known there are all kinds of medical and psychological issues to keep in mind as potential causes.

Safe to say, though, this is one political career that has come to an abrupt end.

  1. Party is irrelevant. I’m glad this guy is disarmed and off the streets.

And I agree that the chance he was having a breakdown of some kind needs to be considered. I would say the EXACT same thing if this is a Republican.
