MONDAY UPDATE: Kurtis Lee of the Denver Post confirms that Rep. Karen Middleton will NOT run for the CD-6 Democratic nomination against Andrew Romanoff.
UPDATE: Supporters close to state Rep. Karen Middleton, now president of the Democratic leadership training organization Emerge America, are asking us to not declare her prospective CD-6 candidacy over until she makes a statement herself. Note that this doesn't correct anything we were told today on good authority, but it might…well, be subject to change?
You know how primaries are, folks. We'll update as soon as we hear anything definitive.
—–
The word from state Sen. Linda Newell, Tweeted moments ago by the Colorado Stateman's Ernest Luning–she will not challenge announced CD-6 candidate Andrew Romanoff for the Democratic nomination to run against incumbent Rep. Mike Coffman in 2014.

Likewise, we've received word today that former state Rep. Karen Middleton will shortly announce she is also not making a run for CD-6 in 2014. Barring a change of heart from Sen. Morgan Carroll, who has previously indicated this is not her first choice for an expected run for some higher office next year, these developments would appear to clear the Democratic field for former Colorado House Speaker Romanoff to take on Coffman in one of 2014's hottest congressional matchups nationwide.

Hmm, I don’t know if I buy that Middleton is out. I don’t know her personally, but nothing I have heard about her suggests she’s someone naive enough to get into this race just to fold because Romanoff is in. Everyone knew Romanoff would get in, although some of us hoped he wouldn’t. Why would she have even bothered with the preliminaries if she was scared of a primary with Andrew? Newell at least gets a little positive press and a name ID boost from it, but if Middleton isn’t running for this seat, she isn’t running for reelection for anything else, either.
A lot of Democrats would like to see a powerful woman, and a lot of people are already unhappy that Romanoff is keeping the no-PAC pledge alive in yet ANOTHER race that he could well lose because of it. Middleton is a tough campaigner, she’s already been elected in that district, and she has as many fundraising connections as Andrew (and more options). If there’s going to be a woman in this race–and I feel there should be–Middleton sounds like it.
I trust ya, Guvs, but my gut says the word you’ve received isn’t final.
Also, the commenting widget on this post isn’t loading in Chrome.
I always get burned in these situations, you never know. But I did hear yesterday that Middleton was not running too.
We might have to live with the no-PAC pledge. Hopefully we can spend around it, and hopefull he can raise around it. It's not smart t start this race with one hand tied behind your back though, agreed.
If no PAC includes do DCCC funding, and he loses, I'm done with him.
Does anyone see the circular firing squad of Romanoff staffers forming yet? Romanoff, get over the PAC thing. Get into Congress and then you can do some shit. Otherwise, you're just another member of Feddie and the Dreamers.
It definitely is not my usual practice to speak for Karen Middleton, but it has to be pointed out that there is just one reason Karen opted out of this race. The organization she heads, Emerge America, is organized as a 527. A bunch of campaign finance lawyers she consulted all agreed that you can't simultaneously be an employee of a 527 and a federal candidate. If she had filed to run, she would have had to immediately quit her job. She didn't want to do that, and she has a huge passion for the work of Emerge, so she chose to not run. That's the entire story.
Thanks, Larry. Karen is a wonderful person with a bright future! She must feel very good about the support she received, and would again.
Commenting problems are annoying today. Are you working on them?
As for Andrew, he's not my first choice but I'm right to fight for anyone who can beat Coffman. Let's go!
Bad news.
Andrew needs the primary to whip him into shape (or lose it).
I doubt that Andrew needs a primary. The problem is a primary would pull him to the left when to win in six he needs to occupy the Center that Coffman has abandoned. Andrew is an experienced campaigner and hardly needs to learn those ropes in a primary.
Exactly. He's done the right thing by announcing now. Campaigns for public office are equal opportunity – those who want to get in the race (primary or not) need to get in the race. I agree with the general statement that has been made by several, that Colorado needs more women elected to Congress. But this seat doesn't have anyone's name on it – may the best person win.
Hmmm, got the haunting message, "You are posting comments too quickly. Slow down." I'll try to think through my comment a little more next time . . .
Yikes! I tend to read everything and then post rapid fire, never seen that.
Are you sure you're not a bot like ArapaGOP?
I have gotten that response a couple of times on short posts.
If I were a bot like ArapaGOP the comment would say something like, "You are posting comments that have no basis in fact. Please do your research."
Excellent! And now the backroom backstab that Andrew so bitterly complained about in 2010 is working on his behalf. How nice. Did he kiss the ring?
Let's see here . . .
1. Various candidates, or publicly mentioned potential candidates, explore running against Mr. "I stand by my statement that I misspoke, and I apologize"
2. Romanoff publicly anounces his campaign . . .
3. Some of the aforementioned candidates, or publicly mentioned potential candidates, announce that they have decided not to run against a better qualified candidate . . .
ArapaGOP concludes . . . "backroom"?? . . . "backstab"?? . . . "kiss the ring"??
I guess the only thing and piques any of my curiosity here is, who's now footing the bill for your on-line dumbassery?
Romanoff has demonstrated the abilty toraise enough money forthis race.He has organization, wouldrepresentmy values better than Mr.Coffman. Ilive in this district. He's getting his shot.Ihope that he wins.
"Thou shalt not bear false witness," oh so-called "Christian."
One of the problems with running in a HD is that is name recognition tends to be local. Karen did the library tax issue, but again, it has been a while since she and Larry left politics.
Andrew at least has more earned media, just because. But, he has been out of circulation a while.
Would Morgan do better? Probably. She has a wide base, much of the center of Aurora along with Adams Co. and all Dems in the district.
Odds of winning go to Morgan; then Andrew; and then Karen. I think any of the three could beat Coffman. The important thing to keep in mind is this is a want to win district. The Dem who runs will have big backing.
RE: update, I'm ready to see Andrew Romanoff have to fight through a tough primary if need be, after 2010 that might actually be justice. If Middleton does get in, I'll support whoever wins! I believe either can beat Coffman.
And WHEN Andrew has to abandon the stupid, stupid STUPID PAC pledge, I'll defend him! Remember that….
Colorado Pols vs. the Democrat Man Club. Who says there's no war on women?

I don't trust agop, and I'm definitely skeptical of the blurb from the teabag hate group in his above post, so I'm just wondering, is Andrew Romanoff not a resident of CD6?
I've read what I know's available and haven't found anything that says he's not. I know he sold his home during his primary battle with Bennett, but if he's renting in CD6, wouldn't that count?
Before I put my foot up his agop's ass AGAIN for being a lazy bullshitter and a clueless bomb thrower,I would need to know.
Can anybody help?
of course renting is sufficient. important to note that CO allows a resident of the STATE to run in any district. it is of course important to voters where a candidate resides but you may all recall that a number of years ago Ken Chlouber (R-Leadville) was going to run against DeGette out of district
No, I can't. But I'm pretty sure you've said that a bunch of times.
Unlike you, and your Neanderthal brethren, Andrew is decidedly not a sexist. I realize that your comments only express your desire to denigrate the guy who is going to wipe the floor with your incumbent douchebag.
It is actually entertaining to observe your desperation.
You seem to misunderstand loneliness. Ms. DeGette doesn't live in her mother's basement, as you. She actually doesn't even stay in Colorado all the time. And when she's in Washington, where most of Colorado's US Representatives work, she has the company of many other Democratic Congresswomen.
And, unlike you, she enjoys the company of the opposite sex.Even when she fantasizes about you, she's not lonely, GOOP.
@Pols: The Reply system here really sucks. I swear I posted that as a reply to the GOOP troll. Anyway, nice color scheme.
My wife asked me the other night what I was reading? I told her that I was reading about everyone going back and forth about PAC money and AR.
She had no idea what PAC money was, but thought it silly that he would not take it when his opponent was.
She is a college educated professional with little interest in inside baseball politics.
Does anybody here thinks that more than 5% of the voting public knows about, much less gives a cr@p about PAC money, where it comes from and that it would give anyone any advantage to not take it?
I get that he had to glom on to something during the primary with an incumbent whom he shared similar views with, but here, with seemingly nobody to impress with his couragous stand, just pissing in the wind.
