UPDATE: Another reader photo, we're delighted to inform you that what pro-gun protesters lacked in numbers today outside President Barack Obama's speech, they made up for in classy!
Hopefully we don't have to explain this one (it's pretty straightforward).

We reported yesterday about the National Rifle Association's call for a protest outside President Barack Obama's speech at the Denver Police Academy this afternoon. During the long debate over gun safety legislation recently passed by the Colorado General Assembly this session, pro-gun advocacy groups have proven quite adept at rallying impressive numbers for protests and crowding legislative hearings.
Well, something happened between the huge mobs that descended on the Colorado Capitol while these bills were debated, and today's "protest" of the President, Colorado Democrats, and Gov. John Hickenlooper.

AP reports, where hundreds of angry pro-gun demonstrators were expected to show their outrage at Obama and his reviled Democratic lackeys in Colorado, setting the tone for the political paybacks to follow as soon as elections can be held–as it turned out this afternoon,
Several dozen gun supporters booed Obama's motorcade as it arrived at the academy.
Several dozen? As in, not even one hundred protesters? We're honestly not trying to ham our reaction up, folks. After the gun lobby was able to easily bring many hundreds to the state capitol, day after day as needed to protest before these bills passed, we are legitimately surprised to see such a paltry turnout for today's protest of President Obama. A short while earlier, a number of Colorado sheriffs held a separate protest at a nearby park, attended by "about 30" demonstrators according to the Denver Post.
We talked a couple of days ago about early evidence that the incipient recall campaigns against Democratic legislators could be coming apart before they even get off the ground. Add that to the surprisingly half-hearted protest of President Obama today, and the dwindling numbers turning out, and perhaps the story should not be the "backlash" against gun safety legislation in Colorado at all.
Perhaps it should be the extent to which said "backlash" is overblown.

Let me just say this about that update.
Oh..she is precious. Love it.
Unlike welfare recipients just getting out of bed at this time of day, most conservatives have jobs. I'm sorry that The One was not worth taking any more time off work for. You'll see those "mobs" at the ballot box next year. Bet on it.
Right. Just like Romney winning.
Exactly. All of this "payback at the polls" is going to fizzle just like this crowd did. Reasonable human beings that vote are comfortable with the idea of universal background checks and not forcing more government spending to pay for them. The bottom line is that the GOP in Colorado is flopping around on the ground like a dying fish and is basically grasping at anything they think will give them traction, keeping Coloradans more safe and protecting constitutional rights at the same time will not be it. As far as I know they don't even have a viable candidate to put up against Mark Udall yet. We are talking about a candidate for U.S. SENATE! Are they done?
sssshhhhh. There's a super secret magic candidate in the wings waiting. We've been warned that its gonna be AWESOME!
Here's an afternoon trivia question: which Colorado GOP candiate does this photo remind you of?
I think that horse goes both ways.
Several dozen people, CrappyHo.
Your promised Sleeping Giant/Silent Majority uprising yielded…. several…dozen…people. Bluster and blather all you want. Yeah, yeah… "welfare recipients"……"The One"…….We can all see how desperate and delusional you're becoming. Keep whimpering about next time…next time…next time……
Alternate theory — after the Governor signed all that gun-grabbin' legislation, the gun nuts woke up the next day, reached under their pillows and still felt the happiness of a warm gun.
Then they realized that maybe Dudley was exagerating just a little bit about the effect of these laws. It's tough to get worked up over something that has absolutely no impact on your life.
Sure, because broad, subtly racist demagogy of entire groups of people (many of whom are poor white folks in Red States) is working so well for your ‘big tent’ party. Look, back when he was a racist punk whelp he used that term all the time—55 years ago—so how would he know, a sitting Congressman, that it would be offensive?
It’s not like you have the creativity to invent your own baseless, base slur. It’s a well-worn turd from the GOP bag of tricks.
Well, there's a marked contrast in the "mood" and the aggressiveness of the gun crowd yesterday and the over the top, crazy behavior exhibited by them on the Legislature's opening day and during the Bills' process.
Same small crowd, actually even smaller this go around, but the tone leading up to the President's visit was not nearly as ominous, threatening, or bluster filled.
Lots of possible reasons here, but leave no doubt, had these idiots behaved like sain or cassidy, the Secret Service would have jammed a foot up their asses real quick. The street agitators like pashman and the industry lobbyists like brown knew it, and allowed fear and common sense guide their actions.
I agree with Club, Davie, and curmudgeon, as people are realizing the legislation was really minor and unrestrictive, But the fact these malcontents behaved themselves points to knowing their bullshit wouldn't be tolerated was a factor as well.
You spent all day trying to think of a rationalization and that was the best you could come up with. That's sad.
Well, the old prejudices are the most reliable ones, aren't they? They only require the most basic reptilian brain functions, and are immune to logic and reason. I's almost like he's devolving.
Its a roller coaster. Yesterday he was all excited about the Super Secret Magically Appealing to both TeaPublicans and Independents candidate that was waiting in the wings to crush Democratic electoral dreams, and the immense power of the Sleeping Giant Silent Majority rising up in one big gun-lovin' anti-gay pro-egg upwelling of Freedom ™ …
And today's he's back to desperate 2008 smears. Somedays you're up, somedays you're down.
Some days you're the bug, some days you're the ball.
mixing your metaphors, my friend…
