What Surprises Await Before Session's End?

  • by: Colorado Pols

The first regular legislative session of the 69th Colorado General Assembly ends no later than midnight on Wednesday. Reporters and spin doctors are busily compiling their end-of-session wrapups–but as the Durango Herald's Joe Hanel reports, there's an awful lot left to resolve, and plenty of opportunities for a fresh blowout before sine die:

The clock is ticking on the final days of one of the most active legislative sessions in anyone’s memory.

For many exhausted lawmakers, it can’t end soon enough.

But a few others will need every last hour to pass their last bills – most notably marijuana regulation, tighter rules on gas- and-oil drillers, and new telecommunications regulations.

The Legislature has until just before midnight Wednesday to finish more than 90 bills that remained on its calendar Friday afternoon. But only a handful of those will consume most of the time and energy…

It's expected that the oil and gas regulation bills will result in the most fireworks over the next three days–the marijuana bills are expected to pass in order to head off a more laissez-faire implementation of Amendment 64 than would otherwise occur. And, of course, there remain vulnerabilities innumerable as so many "uncontroversial" bills await passage. This is why, despite so many major battles already decided in the most momentous legislative session in Colorado that anyone can remember, we can't quite impart the final spin on things just yet.

  1. The most over reach in Colorado history. Wanton violation of the people's liberties. The beginning of the end of the Democrat dynasty.

    Indeed. Momentous.

    1. Oh Brother! Hyperbolic, inaccurate, hysterical. Not unexpected coming from someone whose tag is such a blatant lie for starters. Moderate? Your name ought to be Wackoratus.

    2. Agreed. It will take a long time for the truth to sink in at Colorado Pols. Some of the libs will get it when Morse's recall makes the ballot. For others, they'll have to see Morse thrown out of office. Still others will not understand until Democrats lose in 2014.

Watch the reaction to the Morse recall. First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.

      1. He was talking about non-violent revolution, you dolt (something I am sure you don't understand)…give the man some respect and quote the author of your wisdom. Otherwise you are "pulling a  McInnis" on us.

          1. except that Ghandi was everything a modern republican isn't…maybe you should read a biography of the man and tell me just what about him would have made a great republican.

            Be specific.

          2. “All humanity is one undivided and indivisible family. I cannot detach myself from the wickedest soul.”

Not that I expect any response that actually requires independent thinking on your part, having never demostrated that here to my recollection, but what do you think he meant here? How does this fit in with 'Lanslide' Romney's 47% worldview?

Poverty is the worst form of violence.

            Or this?

“Recall the face of the poorest and weakest man you have seen, and ask yourself if this step you contemplate is going to be any use to him.”

Do you think the GOP Theocrats have saw this quote yet?

            “God has no religion.”

            Or…

“I believe in the fundamental truth of all great religions of the world.”

My word!  This one would go over great at CPAC:

“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”

And, how would you describe his maxim to

"Be the change you wish to see in the world"

            with 'going Galt'?

How does the following jive with the Neocon wing of your party?

“An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind.”

Although, this does sound just like your one-time presidential candidate Grumpy McCain and his side kick Lindsey.

“Nonviolence is a weapon of the strong.”

I have to say I sometimes wonder if you even use your brain at all before you post?  Bot indeed.

            1. He's setting the bar low for getting a recall election on the ballot.  When you are awash in gun lobby money and paying $20 for a signature it should be a given that the professional outsiders will be able to round up the votes.  If Democrats were employing these tactics against a Republican, he would be screaming about outside interference with local affairs.  You said it best.  What a dumbass.

    3. Oh and since whatever legislation is passed does so via majority vote of the legitimately elected representatives of the people,  unless it is ruled unconstitutional it is an expression of, not a violation of, the people's liberty.  See that's how a our system works.  Your side lost.  Your side's views were not  shared by majorities of the people in their designated districts.

Better luck next time but in the meantime this isn't tyranny.  It's representative democracy.   The American way and all that? It doesn't become tyranny whenever you don't  like the result.

  2. Ever.  In Colorado History.  ever.

Once in control of the statehouse, KKK-controlled legislators introduced proposals such as firing all Catholics and Jews on the University of Colorado faculty, and outlawing the use of sacramental wine (which was still allowed under Prohibition). They also pushed to abolish state-sanctioned boards and commissions, and replace them with Klan members.

Just a bunch more hyperbolic whining from the shrinking GOP.  http://coloradoindependent.com/19045/when-colorado-was-klan-country

  3. The Trial Lawyers' Association will bring a late bill busting the medical liability caps.  It wouldn't be the first time, just not this late.
