Kurtis Lee of the Denver Post reports today that former Congressman and 2010 third-party gubernatorial candidate Tom Tancredo is considering a rematch run for Governor against incumbent Democrat John Hickenlooper:
Contacted Wednesday by The Denver Post, Tancredo said he has not made a final decision on whether to run.
In 2010, Tancredo ran in a tumultuous gubernatorial contest as a third-party candidate, netting more than 35 percent of the vote in a lopsided Democratic victory by then Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper. Republican candidate Dan Maes received 11 percent of the vote.
Tancredo has since switched his party affiliation back to Republican.
A more interesting prospective GOP candidate for 2014 that we've been hearing about in the last few days is Tim Foster, who currently serves as the President of Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction. Foster was Colorado House Majority Leader in the 1990s, and was appointed to CMU under former GOP Gov. Bill Owens in 2004. As we've reported in this space previously, Foster has at least to some extent operated CMU as a rotating employment service for Republican operatives and their families.
Bottom line: we don't think Tancredo has a shred of viability for a run in 2014. Foster would certainly do better than Tancredo, but a run against the popular Gov. John Hickenlooper–for an undeluded politician, that is–would be more about raising one's name ID for another run for office down the road than actually hoping to win in 2014. And we could see that as a legitimate long-term incentive for Foster to run.
Above all, the uptick in rumors about Republican gubernatorial candidates not named Sen. Greg Brophy, widely reported to be considering a run for Governor, is bad for Brophy. We consider the prospect of a Brophy run for Governor to mostly be wonderful news for Hickenlooper–and for the sake of downticket 2014 races, perhaps Republicans realize that a different candidate from the gaffe-prone and immoderate Brophy is needed.

Geez, I don't know where to place my hopes! Maybe Tim Foster as Governor would be a good thing for CMU, they might start acting like a real university. Brophy V. Hickenlooper would keep Hickenlooper in office, but I'd personally like to see him primaried by a real Democrat. Tancredo as Governor? That might be interesting–not good, but interesting. I can hardly wait for the next rumor–this is better than any soap opera.
If I'm not mistaken you live in Junction. I agree that Tim Foster would be great and can win.
I read the same post you did Arapa-twit, and I'm pretty sure my dear friend Konola didn't say that. She said it would be a good thing for CMU (Mesa State College, actually) and I agree that Tim would be able to funnel even more money into the pockets of his buddies over at Shaw Construction…something at which he is very adept.
You see, Arapa-dolt, Mesa State College is a university in name only. Foster changed the name for publicity reasons but forgot that doctorate programs, research facilities and other highbrow shit you (and he) could could give a fuck less about, are what make a learning institution a REAL university. Not just more and bigger buildings. He got the idea I am told because most of the many new buildings there are constructed with cinder blocks, also known to many as concrete blocks…but their real name is Concrete Masonry Units.

Mesa State College became Colorado Mesa University (CMU) in August 2011.

Tim Foster can't win. Sure, he's enough of a dullard to be non-threatening to a GOP voter, but his influence would be limited to the slack-jawed straight party-line voters on the Western Slope. He'd have nothing to offer the Eastern Slope GOP except our water, and they already get plenty of that (Thanks, Josh!).
True story: I was at a friend's graduation ceremony several years ago, and Timmy introduced a speaker, who happened to be a Professor Emeritus, as "Professor Em-er-EYE-tus". Good times.
"Professor Em-er-EYE-tus"? Seriously? Thanks for a great laugh.
Landslide. Like Ken Buck all over again. When will you liberals learn?
Tim would make an excellent candidate, and I wouldn't be so sure that Hickenlooper is popular enough to survive him. Tim's a moderate problem solver who reaches across the aisle: what Hick promised but didn't deliver.
There will be no cakewalks next year, that I promise you.
Romney in a landslide!
Give it a rest. 2014 is a new election. Romney isn't running again.
That's not the point, ArapaGOrP dear. The point is that you're a blowhard and a terrible prognosticator.
And you can't handle people pointing out that you were wrong.
Surprised that you're not for Tommy Tanc, Gopher. I hear he's a Republican again which, of course, covers all failings and sins.
You're right about that – it won't be a cake walk…it'll be easier.
Quick: name three examples of Foster being a 'moderate problem solver'!
Once the cake-walking Sleeping Giant awakes and rouses the Silent Majority you liberals are gonna get a lesson and some learnin' Mark my words.
Landslide. Like Ken Buck all over again. When will you liberals learn?
But you won't bet so what good are your promises and empty
threatsclaims. You're joking, right? I've had Republicans who served with him in the House say they would never want to serve with him again. When he was the head of the Department of Higher Education he was in open warfare with the colleges and universities, and especially the faculty. He tried to ramrod a bill at the capitol to take the CMU classified employees out of the state personnel system, which enraged the employees.
Doesn't sound much like someone who "reaches across the aisle" to me.
Besides, if he really were a moderate problem solver he'd have as much chance of making it through a Repubican primary as a gay pro-background check Muslim.
Also ArapGoof would be calling him a RINO.
I hope Tancredo &/or Szabo &/or Brophy are in it. What entertainment
Yeah, Tancredo will be Governor shortly after my coronation as Queen of Never Never Land.
Getting the Orville Redenbacher out now!
Although it seems a little wrong to feel so much joy at such an epic meltdown – like that feeling that you shouldn't look at a car accident as you drive by it on the highway but you do it anyway.
Can't help it!
The Colorado GOP's self-immolation continues.
No no. 2014 is the yeear Coloradans realize that eggs are people and need to have large-capacity magazines and lots of frack fluid to drink.
I suspect that Tim Foster has better things to do. Colorado Pols should call him to get his take. If Tancredo is the nominee next year, the Governor must have the best collection of pictures since Ansel Adams originals.
Pols call a Republican? Like that would ever happen.
A republican answer a phone call from Pols?? Like that would ever happen.
Actually I had hour long interviews with Coffman, Suthers, Tancredo, & Penry. All for Pols. And I asked Lamborn, Tilton, Stapelton, & Gessler.
So yes, we dems do reach out to repubs.
(1) You're not Pols. Sorry to break the news to you. And (2) when are you interviewing Tim Foster and why didn't you interview Dan Maes? He probably would have done it if you pais his mileage.
What's that? ArapGoof has his facts wrong? I'm shocked…..shocked, I tells ya.
NOTE to readers: "realist" is not The realist.
Good to know. That one could get past a person pretty easily.
Tancredo has probably been getting lonely. Wanted some attention and invitations to Lincoln Day banquets
He keeps having to renew his 15 minutes in search of speaking fees. Remember he was already 3 day old fish back when fast fading Palin was at the apex of her career. His only marketable skill is being a fringe, white supremacist, Dixie singing nutcase hero and the competition for that gets tougher all the time.
Tancredo for Governor and Libby Szabo as his running mate. Good times, good times!
Dan Maes for Treasurer. He can see that EVERYONE gets their mileage reimbursed
Are you sure it's not Don?
Maybe that was just his undercover name.
