Shades of Colbert

  • by: Colorado Pols

If you have seen “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central, you’ll probably find this particularly funny. One of Colbert’s schticks is to interview a congressman from a particular district, and one of his questions is usually something along the lines of “President Bush: Greatest President ever or great President?”  Colbert won’t accept any other answer; if you say “He’s been a terrible president,” Colbert will reply, “I’ll just mark you down as ‘great.'”

You know we like polls here at Colorado Pols, so take a look at this poll on Sen. Wayne Allard’s Website. The question is: “When should the President’s next Supreme Court nominee be confirmed?” You have two choices in the poll: “Before the holidays,” or “After the holidays.”

“Before the holidays” is currently leading, if you were curious, but we thought the entire poll was very “Colbert-esque.” With that in mind, we give you our own poll on Sen. Allard:

  1. I feel like I’m voting on a Diebold machine.

You can vote for Jerry Kilgore, or you can vote for Tim Kaine and we’ll mark you down for Jerry Kilgore.  Is there any way to bypass the “security” feature and actually vote “No”?

  2. If your poll were real-life I would hope Allard or any other pol would pay lots and lots of precious campaign money for it. Keep the economy healthy, finance politicians.

  3. Ted,

I am sure that you are right.  Allard, an accomplish Vet, Congressman, and Senator should look up to you because you are so powerful, so intelligent, and so talented that you can be found blogging with the rest of us hacks on a Tuesday afternoon.  I wouldn’t be suprised if Allard starts calling you for advice.

  4. The hearings don’t start until January, so “before the holidays” is impossible. Is Allard that stupid or is he just gearing the poll to the level of the average GOPer?

  5. I like our buddy Wayne just fine. Hell, I even voted for him all the way back in his 4th CD days as well as when he took on our favorite ?Lawyer Lobbyist?.

But given that we are all politically inclined here, can we NOT refer to Senator Wayne as a VET? He is not a VET! A veterinarian? yes, he is a caregiver of all Gods creatures great and small. A Veteran of the U.S. Military and hence deserving of the title VET, he is not.

  6. Mike,

I am sorry that you feel victimized because I said that Wayne Allard is a Vet, which he is.  When I was growing up in Farmland, USA we called all veterinarians either “vet” or “doc”. Your assumption was wrong that I was refering to him as a military vetern.  In fact, in reading you post, we can see that you knew exactly what I was saying when I called him a Vet.

    Stop being a victim Mike.

  7. Barry: Chill! Iron Mike was assuming nothing. He read what he read. If someone–big city guy that I am–didn’t know that ol’ Wayne was–in a prior life–a veterinarian then what the hell would “Vet” mean to me?

By the way, I actually looked up the word “hack.” I really don’t think that’s the word you wanted.

Poll: Is Wayne Allard a Vet? Or,
      Is Wayne Allard a Vet?

  9. Barry – Never been a victim myself… I was the other guy in that equation.

When you were growing up in Farmland, USA… Oh please. You are in danger of earning the “all hat no cattle” desigantion. Having grown up in Weld County before the population explosion I know all about the folksie ways of refering to a Vetrinarian. My point was one of respecting those of us who (usually) left our colorful State to serve our nation in uniform, rather than becoming a FOF clone like yourself.

Be sure to kiss your pretty wife for me.

  10. George,

You only have to hit the post button once.  I am sure that Mike read what he read, but when intelligent people don’t understand what they have read they ask for clarification, they don’t jump to conclusions.

And George, I am sure that I wanted to use the word hack which is defined as “One who undertakes unpleasant or distasteful tasks for money or reward; a hireling.”

    Mike,

“My point was one of respecting those of us who (usually) left our colorful State to serve our nation in uniform, rather than becoming a FOF clone like yourself.”  – If you respect veterans so much why use a slang term to honor them instead of the appropriate term “vererans”?

As for FOF, how I grew up, and my wife… since you don’t know anything about me, I will just ignore your ignorant remarks.

  11. Hey, Barry. Once again, chill, man. It’s only a website where big egos implode, usually harmlessly, because that’s the nature of forums where anonymous politicos and those of us who find politics fascinating can vent and pontificate. And, by the way, I really wish to hell I was getting paid (a hireling) for “hacking” away on this site! Like I said, I don’t think “hack” is the word you really wanted to use.

    Be well.

  12. Hack is exactly the right word, George, as in hack writer.  I oughta know, I’ve done it for years.  I believe it was Samuel Johnson who wrote: No man but a blockhead ever wrote, except for money.”

  13. Barry, I’m still laughing from the typeaux of the day, mainly your:
“If you respect veterans so much why use a slang term to honor them instead of the appropriate term “vererans”? “

Mike, as a vereran myself, I mean, a venereal, oops, I mean a vetwhoran, oh, to hell with it, as an ex soldier who wasn’t very good at the art of war but lived to laugh about it, I know I shouldn’t ask, but I will anyway:
What’s an “FOF”?  That’s a new one for me, though military creole has only one meaning for F.
