Tancredo Defends Rep. Steve King's DREAMer Insult

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) with Rep. Mike Coffman (R-CO) left.
Rep. Steve King (R-IA) with Rep. Mike Coffman (R-CO) left.

Huffington Post reports, you probably saw this coming:

Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.) came to the defense of Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) in a World Net Daily editorial published late last week, denouncing conservatives who have publicly voiced disapproval of King's remarks on undocumented students.

King came under fire earlier this month after telling Newsmax TV that for every undocumented immigrant "who's a valedictorian, there's another 100 out there who weigh 130 pounds — and they've got calves the size of cantaloupes because they're hauling 75 points of marijuana across the desert."

King's comments have drawn bipartisan criticism, including from GOP leadership. House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) urged fellow lawmakers to pursue "honest disagreements about policy without using hateful language" in a statement released last week, and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) similarly characterized King's comments as "inexcusable."

Tom Tancredo.
Tom Tancredo.

But says Tom Tancredo, GOP candidate for governor of Colorado:

"The exact words Rep. King used … are easy to criticize," he said. "But King’s substantive point is demonstrably true. There are in fact far more drug smugglers (and other criminals) than future valedictorians among the nearly 2 million youthful illegal aliens who would qualify for the 'Dream' amnesty."

"It is disgusting to see Republican leaders joining this lynch mob," he added.

This settles one question: Tancredo has retained the same political sense that made him persona non grata among mainstream Republicans during the administration of President George W. Bush. Bush, as you may recall, grew to despise Tancredo after he repeatedly, and in some cases almost single-handedly set the party back years in terms of Hispanic outreach–something that Bush genuinely viewed as important from his experience as governor of Texas. By jumping to the defense of the similarly uncouth Rep. Steve King of Iowa, at a time when most GOP leaders are distancing themselves from King's unseemly remarks about "DREAMer" students, Tancredo is providing a fresh reminder why he is shunned by Republicans with an instinct for political survival.

Which obviously doesn't include the Republicans who want him to be your governor.

  1. What the hell is it with racist GOP douchebags and their whimpering about "lynch mobs" when they do something that pisses people off?

      1. Part of me feels there's a darker agenda there, like they're purposefully co-opting and minimizing horrific events that happened to minorites by comparing them to their own maudlin, pity-the-poor-old-white-racist-guy complaints.

        1. There are some very strange cases out there on the point of whether something can be construed as legal advice and thus create a liability issue for an attorney. Better safe than sorry is my attitude

            1. And see, this is what I get for giving you guys an additional tip to attack Tancredo/King.  Slings and arrows.  No good deed goes unpunished with the ColoradoPols crowd.

              1. Elliot;

1: While I appreciate your stance on Immigration Reform, no one needs anyone's help attacking Tancredo/King. They make it painfully easy.

2: Anyone who takes themselves so seriously that they think they need to take precautions against being sued for legal malpractice because of an opinion on a political website is pretty much asking for trouble. It's like a food fight in the cafeteria; if you don't nail the stick-up-his-ass guy in the sweater vest with a gob of mashed potatoes, it's a disrespectful to the process. You have to just admit that you asked for it, give back as good as you got, and move on.

                NOT PSYCHIATRIC ADVICE

                1. Do what you want with it.  I put that proviso, as do others, on stuff that I post online that might be construed as legal advice.  It is a prudent precaution that more experienced attorneys taught me long ago.

  2. I notice Coffman standing next to King.  Talk about incongruent messages.  Whose side are you on Mike.

Tancredo is probably the perfect antidote for Hickenloopers anemic leadership.  "Well at least he isn't Tancredo."

    1. Yes, it really, Really, bothers me that Coffman will not acknowledge what a shortsighted and mean spirited guy King is. Or Tancredo.   It really bothers me.

I'll still probably vote for him in the hope that by winning over and over Coffman will realize he is safe and can safely alter his behavior.

You can tell how annoyed I am by the way I capitalized the second really and even italicized it.

  3. Anyone wanna' bet that Tommy probably "just forgot" to measure the calves of all that cheap labor that built his in-home movie theater???

  4. The rethorical question back to these racist bastards is how validictorians to worthless drug addicts are among the heirs of the 1%?  How more Hispanic validictorians would there be if they got a fair shot at a good education?

    1. Don't be silly, GG; any heirs of the 1% who have struggled with drugs are simply "troubled youth"; to quote PJ O'Rourke, "If they were criminals, they'd be poorer, and darker skinned".

  5. "There are in fact far more drug smugglers (and other criminals) than future valedictorians among the nearly 2 million youthful illegal aliens who would qualify for the 'Dream' amnesty."

I would say that this is true. If you have 1 valdictorian per school and 1.01 drug smugglers per school.

But, Tommy is still a douche.
