Beauprez Hires a Campaign Manager

  • by: Colorado Pols

Steve Truebner, most recently of the Republican Governors Association, will now be managing the gubernatorial campaign of Bob Beauprez.

The 1998 CSU grad started his career under Sean Tonner (a.k.a. Phaseline), is a former Staff Director for Governor Bill Owens and was the campaign manager for Donetta Davidson. The move comes right after the RGA lost both of this years only two gubernatorial races.

In one of those states, Virginia, Kilgores campaign manager, Ken Hutchinson, was once considered a viable contender for the post.  It seems Ken has since turned down the offer from the Beauprez camp  and Steve must have been their second choice.

Or maybe third.

Because one of the biggest no shows this past weekend at the Republican State meeting was none other than John Marshall, Campaign Coordinator for Beauprez.  Sources close to the campaign arent commenting about the potential move of Marshall, but supporters are heard to be relieved the campaign will now have a real manager.

Will Truebner get the Beauprez campaign back on track?

For a politico who started his career under Tonner and Owens, Truebner might be successful in developing a statewide network for Beauprez. The downside is that the move does nothing to distance Beauprez from the Owens Administration and Bruce Benson cabal.

Truebner’s hiring also does nothing to help re-establish the credibility of the State Republican Party, though that probably wasn’t of primary concern. Truebner has strong ties to the GOP Political Director, Dustin Olson – and for a party still trying to get over the heavy-handed procedures of the last state convention (and perceived impropriety of being involved in primary races) Truebner returning to Colorado wont bode well for the unity GOP Chairman Bob Martinez has been hoping to institutionalize.

Activists will surely see this move as Beauprez hiring Phaseline by default – and with Olson being in cahoots with his great friend, Truebner, the republicans will remember the work of former Political Director Scott Russell and his alliance to Coors vs. Schaffer.

This race could get worse before it gets better.

  1. Great!  Just what we need.  Another Washington elitist telling us what Colorado thinks.  Has “Both Ways Bob” totally forgotten that it’s the Republican voters who will decide whether he is our next nominee, not some commandment from the Bill, Bob & Bob crowd who have driven the party into the ground for the past seven years.

  2. So is Steve Colorado also… Or is that just Both Ways Bob?

And if Bob is Colorado, like he said he was on Saturday, does that mean the rest of us aren’t Colorado? Do we have to be other States? Can I still be DougCo?

    Bob is just so confusing.

  3. What have you done for us lately?  Well, no wonder Beauprez didn’t want to come out against C&D!  Bill Owens’ influence lives on.  Now I HAVE TO vote for Holtzman, no other choices.

  4. He graduated CSU in 1998? …and now is running a Governors race? How old is he… 28, 29? What drugs are Bob and Shari smoking? Do they want to win this race or not?
Even if they beat Holtzman, you can not tell me they are seriously going to take on the Democrats with a 29 year old CM?
So where is the Holtzman victory party going to be held at? I’m sure they started planning it today.

  5. If Marshall is still on board, he hasn’t been around much. All I ever see is Julie out with Cinnamon. I was very much under the impression though that Shari hated the Phaseline crowd… Phaseline is spending a lot of time with Bobbie B, it makes me wonder if Bobbie B cut the cord with Shari as well.

  6. Laura Teal is Red Hawk no big surprise there explains why Holtzman always stays at the top of the odd’s line. Please Colorado Pols AKA Holtzman campaign show us the proof that Beauprez hired anyone? Go ahead remove my post like BS and others that out’d Laura Teal and the Holtzman campaign for funding this site.

  7. How about posting how Laura Teal of the Holtzman campaign keeps lists of all the IP address from this site of people who log on need proof Colorado Pols (aka Laura Teal) just ask Joe Peters who showed us all the list.

  8. BS didn’t attack anyone I saw the post which was up for a record 3 minutes, he out’d Laura Teal and went through Truebners record then asked for one centilla of proff that Truebner was hired so for that you guys at the Holtman campaign removed the post in record time wow!

  9. Good Grief. You all think this site is a Polis front, then Hickenlooper, now Holtzman. If your “candidate” doesn’t receive the coverage you think he deserves, you jump all over us and cry foul. For the last time – we are not a “front” of any candidate, and will continue to post on issues and stories we feel are credible. And you’re welcome to disagree civilly.

  10. I don’t know about all this other stuff, but I was at the Independance Institute’s Founder’s Dinner last week and at the Central Committee Meeting in Keystone on Saturday and I didn’t see Marshall. So what’s his deal? Is he still with the campaign? Taking vacation?

  11. Front may be a bit strong, but name one other place on this planet that is even one-tenth as enraptured by Holtzman as Colorado Pols.  Referendum C passes, discrediting him in the eyes of Colorado voters _ and you UPPED the odds for him over Beauprez.  Unbleepingbelievable.

  12. If in fact IP addresses are recorded by Colorado Pols or Holtzman’s campaign it is a gray area of the law but the fact that this website doesnot have a privacy statement or disclaimer allows them much greater latitude but to think they are imune from legal action is not the case. In our society anyone has the right to sue or bring charges a case in point was Holtman filing what turned out to be junk charges of list stealing by Beauprez.

  13. Joe Peters and Andy George shared the file with at least five of us. I have seen the file that Laura Teal keeps on people who log on this site. If this is not true please tell us clearly Colorado Pols that
    1) Laura Teal is not in fact Red Hawk

    2) You do not keep lists nor have you ever tracked IP addresses.

Remeber how you answer this may revisit you in a court room guys.

Remember how you answer this may revisit you in a court room guys.

  15. I think you guys have this all backwards.

I was also at the Founders Dinner last week and I overheard Julie Hermann of the Beauprez campaign tell Laura Teal from the Holtzman Campaign that they are collecting IP addresses on this web site. She said it right there in a crowded ballroom with a dozen people around her. So who cares what Joe Peters says, Julie is telling the world the Beauprez campaign has hacked this web site.

  16. Why does ColoradoPols.com not have a privacy statement or disclaimer? It might be helpful for all of us if we knew that you all in the Ciber HQ were not tracking us?

    This is really disturbing news!

  17. Rocker nice try to blur things. Fact Joe Peters and Andy George have a file that Laura Teal AKA Red Hawk gave them which lists every IP address and who owns it. Why would Holtzman’s campaign want this information and better quustion how did they get it? I have in fact seen the file please call me a liar Colorado Pols.

My bet that Holtzmans campaign is paying for this site. Give them an A+ for keeping it a secret this long.

  18. Why does Colorado Pols not have a privacy disclaimer? Maybe you should add one. Also back to BS’s point. What proof does Colorado Pols have for this post that Beauprez has hired Steve Truebner was there a press release or something?

  19. Dick? You’re Voyageur?

It’s me George! George Bush! Isn’t this funny.  Kinda awkward too.

Laura wants to know when you’re coming over for dinner next. Remember, you bring the beer.

  20. Okay, George/Mike I’ll bring the beer, but the last time I innocently brought Coors and found myself in trouble with somebody called Shaffer.
I just hope nobody learns that Phoenix Rising is actually Nancy Pelosi on crack.

  21. Whoever it is that is posting about this so-called “IP List” You are full of shit.

Some people need to get a life and stop living and dying ColoradoPols!

  22. Di… er, Voyageur, Bob’s a good guy, but yeah, he was pissed. What can I say, Laura likes Maureen’s magaritas. So do I.

Good job fingering that Phoenix guy (or is it gal?). I haven’t said anything, but… I think Pacified is Osama bin Laden. If we could get that IP I bet we could finally nail him!

You call Holtzman and see if they are tracking the IPs. I’ll call Beauprez, he does everything I tell him to, so one of us should hit the jackpot.

  23. A blog (or any other site) has the right to do pretty much what it darned well pleases with the information it can gather from Web connections.  You are using a private resource – welcome to the corporate world of the Internet.

Whether it chooses to collect information or not, or post a formal notice of privacy or not, is up to the Website.  The Dead Governors have repeatedly stated a lack of interest in collecting said information, and the lack of any kind of banning mechanism aside from public ridicule I think enforces the truth to those statements.

  24. This is the worst piece of gossip/innuendo posing as news that I have seen ColoradoPols post since they announced that Holtzman was dropping out of the Governor’s race.

Marshall was at a funeral this weekend.

I can guarantee that Truebner is nowhere on the list of possible Beauprez campaign managers.

  25. Haha.  Was too clever with a “news” item, that they bought as reality.  That’s why I can smell this one.  The Holtzman crew has been trying so hard to sell the dead Guvs on “stories” and finally they got a hit.

I will eat my own feet if this story proves true.

  26. Dan, it’s a treat to eat your feet in the Colorado blog.
Phoenix, sweetheart, I’m surprised you want George and me to get back to running the country.  You’ve been pretty critical of our actions in the past.  You really want us back on task?

  27. Yes, Dick.  That is your name, right?  Dick?

If you could actually start the job you were hired to do 5 years ago, that would be great.  You know, develop an actual plan for this war you got us in to?  Be fiscally responsible while being compassionate?  No nation-building – you know, what you promised to do.

  28. I first heard the rumor of the ISP list tracking everyone at the GOP Central Committee meeting this last weekend. Have not seen the list yet but talked with a couple of people who had.

  29. Is this ture?  ColoradoPols is posting a BS story about a guy getting fired while he’s attending a funeral?  Really classy ColoradoPols.  Real classy.

I’d hope if Marshall isn’t fired, and was at a funeral, you all would issue an apology with equal billing.

  30. Wow, you can’t go to dinner!

OK, so Marshall had a death in the family. Sorry to hear that John, we’ll keep your family in our prayers.

But what’s the deal with this Steve guy? Did Beauprez really hire a 28 year old Campaign Manager? Am I the only one who thinks that’s stupid?

  31. No, we don’t “track IP addresses.” Why would we? What would be the point? Do the people who are spreading that rumor even know what that means?

Anybody who runs a website could easily track who vists and when. Click on the SiteMeter button at any number of blogs and you can see the IP addresses. We run a statistics tracking software like most websites so that we know how many people visit each day, but we don’t track each individual IP address because there would be no point to it. Your computer IP number is probably recorded on most websites you visit, but that doesn’t mean much. We might be able to tell you if you have Comcast, for example, but so do hundreds of thousands of people. What good is that information?

We do block spammers, and occasionally we will block commenters who continually post disrespectful and slanderous comments despite being asked to stop. But matching comments with IP addresses and trying to track down what computer they came from would be a long, long, long process that in the end would yield nothing useful for us.

So, no, we don’t track IP addresses.

  32. Here’s a few things I’ve learned in my ten something years of working Colorado Politics; there are good eight or ten bad apples in the republican clan.  Folks who like to undermine, discredit, destroy and slander any other politico for the simple pleasure of doing it. There are another twenty something who always look out for each other and try to help whenever possible. Sure, they may work for different candidates – but they understand that we are all on the same preverbal “team” and usually are able to rise above petty primary differences.

And I?ve been reading this blog for a long while. I?ve seen who is attacked, and I?ve noticed who does it. So ? in the interest of being a bit of a blog detective?

Whenever the words Phase and Line are posted or discussed ? the knives start to fly. Whenever Benson is mentioned, the epithets and personal insults are hurled.

This post had all three words in it. And ? like clockwork ? instead of a rational discussion taking place under the comments thread, the ?bad apples? start their politics of mutually assured destruction.

Do I think there is a list? No. Do I believe this site is run by any one candidate? Again ? no. Do I think there are people who are sitting on this site ? day in and day out ? doing nothing but trying to increase the fissure we all know already exists?  Yes.

I know Laura, and Joe, and Andy, and George, and Tyler, and Ethan, and Tiffany, and Rich, and Dirk, and Rob, and Dustin, and Steve, and Hans, and Mario, and Brian, and Cinnamon, and Scott, and every other republican operative ever mentioned here.  I know several of them will always bind together, just as I know all of them will never all agree at one time.  But they are all working and believing in what they do.

So, whoever out there is trying to create conflict where there is none, and hoping to destroy anyone else who you think might ever be in your way ? or with the job you hope to have ? or working with the campaign you hoped to be on ? well, get over it.  This world is too small, and karma is real.

  33. yep. and I am willing to bet that this was all a ruse to deflect away from the real issue of a pd from rga coming to colorado to run a gov primary. does anyone else see the conflict in that?

  34. yep. and I am willing to bet that this was all a ruse to deflect away from the real issue of a pd from rga coming to colorado to run a gov primary. does anyone else see the conflict in that?

  35. I’ve got a Line for you Pols readers – how long will the Dead Govs hide their political agenda behind the “We’re acused of working for everybody” post? Every time their credibility/neutrality is called into question (as it certainly should be with this trashy post) they claim everyone says the same thing about them. Not true, and it has nothing to do with the truth.

They got pretty sloppy with this post today, and got a taste of the reader backlash as well…

  36. Denver Attorney and Legal Prof.:

Yes, collecting IP addresses is a gray area, but it?s not one you?ll be able to lighten or darken for anyone; you two can?t even write. Collecting IP addresses is not illegal, but it may be unethical. You obviously don?t practice or teach ethics.

For all the folks talking about Steve Truebner?s age:

If Truebner graduated from college in 1998, John Marshall is younger.

    Colorado Pols:

You can?t even cite the correct organizations or positions?it?s Republican Governors Association, not Republican Governor?s Association; Steve Truebner was organizational director and field director for the Owens campaigns, not staff director; it?s Phase Line, not Phaseline?so why should anyone believe your posts.

I know Jason Bane and Jeralyn Merritt like to think they are privy to all the latest political gossip and always know what they?re talking about, but they?re mistaken. The many problems with this post provide the latest examples of their fondness for follies.

    Everyone:

Truebner is arrogant and ignorant?the worst possible combination. If Beauprez hires him, which he hasn?t, the much older and smarter Dick Leggitt will have a field day. Leggitt will issue his usual bitingly witty press releases, and Truebner will consistently botch the responses. If people thought Beauprez?s post-election press release was bad, a Truebner release will show them just how bad press releases can get. Marshall has some idea of how to handle the media?Leggitt definitely does a better job?but Truebner has none. About the only good thing I can say about Truebner is he?s a Yankees fan.

If Marshall does leave, watch for Owens to hire him, again. The three Bs?Bob Beauprez, Bruce Benson, and Bill Owens?always take care of their own.

  37. boy – you people really do live and die by this blog. no lives? nothing better to do on a holiday week? as for me, I will sit back and see. did truebner leave rga? did bb hire a cm? is tonner involved? I could personally care less. its all a shell game at this point anyway.

  38. For those who don’t know much about the operation of Websites, the IP addresses of every access are easily tracked via the normally configured Web logs, both on Windows and Linux/UNIX systems.  Sites often use these logs to analyze traffic patterns, and there is absolutely nothing “gray” about it; it’s been standard practice for more time than most of you have spent on computers.

But who the bleep cares about tracking IP addresses?  Half of the accesses probably come from Qwest DSL or Comcast Cable lines; those addresses aren’t assigned to specific people, and can be changed simply by disconnecting and reconnecting your DSL/Cable modem.  And if you’re so concerned about having your company identified, don’t post from work, or go through an anonymizer service if you’re really desperate.

And since you’re being paranoid, concern yourself with this: the source and destination addresses of every e-mail you send are logged along with a timestamp of when the message was received by your ISP and resent to its destination; every time you log in to IM, your address is logged with Yahoo!, AOL, or MSN; every phone call you make is logged with the phone company.

  39. Here is the removed post – tell me pols readers, was this a bad post??

Nicely said Sean and peak – a – boo.

  41. Anybody with at least some knowledge of the internet knows that every website you visit tracks your ISP, but it’s not like the ISP has your name on it. Give it a rest, people.

  42. Shame on Colorado Pols for posting such out and out lies.  I hope somebody’s IP address is blocked over this.

As for you black helicopter types, John Marshall was at the funeral of his 95 year old grandfather who died of lung cancer this past weekend.

I hope the Holtzman camp knows that their slimy ways are being duly noted.  Colorado voters do not appreciate these types of antics. Shame on Holtzman and Laura Teal.

  43. I just thought I would remind everyone of the very first post on this site.

    Colorado Governor Candidate Update
Marc Holtzman, former aide to Governor Owens and rejected candidate for Colorado State University President, is telling friends and family that he will run for Governor in 2006 on the Republican ticket. Holtzman is currently the President of Denver University and was Secretary of Technology in Owens’ first cabinet. He is also a wealthy businessman who may be able to self-fund some of his candidacy as well.

Holtzman joins Treasurer Mike Coffman as the two known Republican candidates for Governor. Check back at coloradopols.com for a breakdown of candidates for Governor and their odds at winning both the primary and general elections.

The third post was one that bashed BB, the fourth bashed, Bill Owens.

  44. Then I’ll also remind you that this site has had many guests who post and DON’T agree with the gov. line-up. And there is no question – this site leans D and moderate. But hey – if you don’t like it – don’t read it.

  45. Achilles-
The BB camp fired the first slimy blog shot, so you can take your self riotousness and shove it.

Everybody knows BB’s staff was the one that leaked the bs about MH dropping out of the race (leaked on this blog, then printed in the papers).

Whereas, I’d love to see the proof that:

    A.  MH’s camp had anything to do with this story (and please save the conspiracy theories about Pols being run by MH for somebody who’s dumb and gullible enough to listen to you)

    B.  The story is incorrect.  Even if Marshall was at a funeral (I don’t doubt that he was-John, all of our thoughts and prayers with you) That doesn’t mean that there isn’t a new campaign manager.

If it was incorrect, pols is pretty good about correcting themselves – although sometimes pretty snobbily.

Go cry in the corner somewhere, nobody wants to hear your sob story.

  46. Hey there Little Irishguy: You demand “proof”? Right after proclaiming “everyone knows” something BB’s camp is said to have done?

Better go check the turkey and leave your blogging for another day…

  47. Agreed.  ColoradoPols is not run by Holtzman staff, nor is it run by Beauprez staff.  If you think that it is, it means that you read into things that you shouldn’t read into.  Occasionally I will read a line update and people go nuts on this site thinking that an actual election took place and their horse lost.  As soon as ColoradoPols starts controlling the actual votes someone gets rather than making predictions, I will get upset as some of you nuts, until then I think I’ll just enjoy the site.

  48. Hey there Little Irishguy: You demand “proof”? Right after proclaiming “everyone knows” something BB’s camp is said to have done?

Better go check the turkey and leave your blogging for another day…

  49. This site may “lean” moderate to left, whatever that means.  But nary a day goes by that it doesn’t either bash Beauprez, suck up to Holtzman, or both.  If Beauprez walks on water, the dead Guvs post “Beauprez can’t swim.”
Assuming a two-man primary, the site will report after the votes are in “Marc Holtzman finished second while Bob Beauprez was next to last!”
It’s stretching to think they are macchiavellian Democrats who want to nominate the weakest possible R, Holtzman.  But, what can explain the bias in the gubernatorial race?

  50. need I remind everyone that it was this very site that first reported mh getting out of the race months ago? some front. as to the “named parties” involved, I can also report a few facts: 1. bb is shoppping hard. 2. they interviewed both parties. 3. steve is leaving rga. 4. john would love the job, shari loves his media skills, but he loves his wife more and doesn’t want the cm hours.  as to the rest of the comments here, well – heck – i’m sure the dead guvs do the best they can.  lay off and go enjoy friends and family.

  51. You guys seem to forget that Beauprez was at the top of the line for a long time last spring and summer. It isn’t like Holtzman started out on top. I don’t necessarily agree with their opinions of Holtzman, but they have always made solid arguments in my opinion. What has Beauprez done in the last 4 months that makes him so great? I’m not going to annoint him the frontrunner just because he is a congressman. You can’t possibly say that BB has done a better job than Holtzman in the last couple of months. Where they will end up could be different, but BB hasn’t done squat.
