Recall: Subversive of the Republic

  • by: IndependentProgressive

Next target for Colorado gun radicals is state senate district 19, the seat held by Evie Hudak. These extremists have again started a recall petition to overthrow the results of the 2012 general election.

Let’s be very clear about this recall effort: it is subversive of our republican form of government.

The people using this procedure for their own narrow, radical ends are the antithesis of orderly, rational representative government as envisioned by our nation’s founders.

In this particular case, state Sen. Hudak was not deceitful about her political philosophy or her stand on issues — no one paying any attention whatsoever should have been the least bit surprised by how she voted on the gun safety bills.

These are the ‘egregious’ offenses that have these gun zealots in such a lather:

The Colorado legislature passed a background check law.
The legislature approved a 15 round magazine limit.

On the other hand, no law was passed that would stop an individual from owning even an assault weapon.

The real problem for the gun extremists is that their ‘side’ lost the last election, they cannot accept the verdict of the voters, so now they are abusing the recall provision of the law to attempt to subvert the will of the electorate.

There is a very American reason why this country is a republic — we elect individuals to represent us in making laws; we elect those people at regularly scheduled times and places so that voters can thoughtfully and deliberately consider and make decisions based upon an array of criteria including positions on many issues, on personality, on general philosophy, etc. To subvert that process by demanding what is essentially a referendum on an official over a specific issue is anti-republican, it is descending to mob rule and agitating for a tyranny of the minority.

Make no mistake, the proponents of this recall may puff themselves up and blather on and on about the Constitution, but they are radical extremists who couldn’t care less about the overarching principles contained in the Constitution — all they care about is their own desires and their own selfish concerns.

If these gun radicals are so convinced that the background check and magazine limitation laws are unconstitutional, then let the courts make that determination. But these laws are not going to be declared unconstitutional.

If these gun radicals are so convinced that the majority of voters agree with them, then they can run their own candidate in the next election. But like spoiled children they want what they want now! And besides, they keep losing in regular elections because reasonable citizens vote on a range of issues and do not tend to be swayed by the causes of single-minded fanatics.

In the big picture sense this recall is not about Sen. Hudak or even one’s thoughts about the Second Amendment — it is about electoral insurrection and subversion of the form of representative government designed for us by Washington, Madison, Hamilton, Franklin, et al.

Good Americans will not sign the recall petition; don’t participate in the subversion of our republic.

Note: I am not a Democrat; I am a registered ‘unaffiliated’ voter. I have also not been a political supporter of Evie Hudak … just ask her. By the way, I also happen to be a gun owner.

  1. Great to hear from an unaffiliated voter. You all do make up 1/3 of Colorado voters! Also, thanks for your clarity on how the endless recall cycles undermine small-d democracy.

There are two other pieces of gun legislation which were passed in the last cycle, but for some reason these are not controversial. Possibly because no money is involved?

One, Senate Bill 197, would restrict domestic abusers from owning guns. As noted in the article, Senator Hudak moved this bill forward, because of past personal experience, when a student of hers was hot to death by an ex-boyfriend, who had a restraining order against him.

In 2011, 13 women in Colorado were killed by guns wielded by abusers.

As a domestic violence survivor, and a volunteer at one of the first women's shelters in Denver, I am grateful to Senator Hudak for her strong activism on this issue. And I'm still waiting to hear the gunzos declaim on how it's threatening their second amendment rights.

  2. Thanks for an excellent explanation of the passive insurrection of the dwindling "right". The world they seek is ruled by dogma…theirs. You should send this to the Grand Junction Free Press…Mesa County needs to hear your point of view loudly and clearly.
