The greatest news is that Tom Tancredo is not running for re-election in Colorado Congressional District 6. Hooray!! Good riddance to that bigoted moron. Now for my worries.
My first worry is where and who is the superstar that the Colorado Democratic Party will put into a race that Democrats now have a slight chance of winning? It’s going to take a superstar, someone with name recognition and strong voter appeal, to even have a chance of edging out the Republican candidate. Right now it looks like our bumbling Secretary of State, Mike Coffman.
My second worry is that the Colorado Democratic Party leadership will let this opportunity slip through their hands. My impression of our leaders to this point is that they don’t believe that a Democrat has any chance to win to win in CD-6. Maybe they’re right. But I really believe that 2008 will provide a unique opportunity where a Democrat, if it’s the right Democrat, just might have a chance to win.
My third worry is that the Colorado Democratic Party leadership has no idea who that superstar might be. It feels like they’re waiting for somebody to emerge rather than lining someone up to take on the challenge. I hope I’m wrong. Who are the superstars that might have a chance to win? I’m no expert, but has anybody talked with Federico Pena, Dick Lamm, Norm Early or maybe even a non-politician like Ed McCaffery? Those are just whimsical thoughts.
My biggest and final worry is that Pat Waak and the leaders of the Colorado Democratic Party are going to get caught flatfooted while Mike Coffman waltzes in and claims Congressional District 6 as his own with a minimum of effort. Please don’t let that happen. Find a superstar.

They don’t believe that a Dem has any chance of winning, and for good reason. They’ve had their hopes dashed too many times between Martha Ezzard, Joan Fitz-Gerald, and Ken Toltz, to name just three for whom they had high hopes.
I am not suggesting letting this seat go uncontested. Leave it to the GOP to let seats go uncontested. The Dems need to run an articulate, presentable candidate who can try to get as much free-media attention as possible and show up for any and all candidate forums to keep Coffman (or Harvey or Lil Armstrong) accountable.
But nobody should be surprised if the state Dems decline to sink any real money into C.D. 6.
P.S. The three candidates I mentioned above had DCCC support, lots of $$$, and ran in C.D. 6 when it was a lot more competitive than it is now. They averaged in the low to mid 40% range, IIRC.
He actually forced the tank to campaign (I laugh when I think about the commercial he ran).
A good candidate can force them to spend money, but I think the quality candidates are waiting for redistricting. I suspect the CD-6 will end up as a DougCo canton perfectly suited to a wing nut. The New CD8 will be designed with jeffco, part of arapahoe and west denver to lean D. (kind of a modification of the plan Degette shot down).
The truth is The DNC and the DCCC like having a few GOP wing nuts around:it helps with fund raising.
At present they would probably elect Tom Foley(R) over Jesus Christ(D) – and yes, if Jesus ran for office, his politics would clearly make him a Democrat.
.
how would you feel about supporting a Conservative Democratic candidate ?
That’s the only kind that could prevail.
But only if the party and grassroots would help,
and that seems unlikely.
