The Koch Brothers and their Tea Party group Americans for Prosperity are coming to a TV screen near year you. As Politico reports:
Americans for Prosperity has reserved nearly $850,000 in airtime for TV ads that will begin Monday.
A source tracking media buys told POLITICO that about $500,000 in time has been reserved in Denver and $340,000 has been reserved in Colorado Springs. The money is spread over three weeks.
This buy from Americans for Prosperity is the first major expenditure by an outside group in Colorado in 2014, but it certainly won't be the last. We haven't seen the ad, but no doubt it attempts to tie incumbent Sen. Mark Udall to Obamacare. None of this is a surprise, except for the details: $340,000 seems like a lot of money to spend in a Colorado Springs market, where a heavy Republican voter base should theoretically already oppose Udall. Perhaps Udall isn't as disliked in Southern Colorado as we all might have expected.

850K in anti-Udall commercials.
That ought to be enough to put Gardner ahead in the next round of polling.
Which one is Gardner again?
He's the guy that ran against Bennet in 2010.
No, he's that beer guy with a large handlebar mustache….
That was Chauncey . . . ???
One must wonder are anti-Udall ads the same as pro-Gardner ads? If not, why not?I'm not sure I can recall an ad specifying what Republicans and conservatives are for.Seen plenty talking about what they're against.
Spoken like a true Kochsucker.
You stupid people and your brain-dead worship of oligarchs. Pure filth,
We WILL stop you.
Unless voters actually figure out who Gardner is
Gotta love the Kock brothers and their motto: "Billions for propaganda, not a penny for taxes!"
My guess is it is in Owen Hill's backyard for a reason.
Who watches network teevee anymore?
Isn't money spent this far in advance basically wasted?
Not if they think they can redefine Udall.
But buying time a week out from the start of the ad isn't effective use of money – they're paying (comparatively) through the nose for the time they just bought.
What is an extra 100k or so to a billionaire?
Not so much.
Dems need one of your billionaires to step up soon on Obamacare or Harry Reid will soon be a bad memory.
Keep bowing down to them, Koch-sucker; maybe they'll toss a few coins your way. Maybe.
P.S. You're still a racist chickenshit. Everyone knows it now.
Cur, I am sure if you told everybody they all believe it. You have such power over people. Maybe your mother will let you out of your basement bedroom soon when it is time for diner.
Uh-huh. You still haven't answered my question, asking you to simply name the "group of people" you were so happy to mention that were pushing Obamaphones.
So, devastating as your misspelled insult may be, you're still a racist chickenshit.
P.S. And "Dad" was not your real father.
In other words, every voters know that Koch Brothers is attempting to curry favors to the Republicans and decide to screw 'em and vote Democrats!
The day that the Koch Brothers end up in prison for RICO and organized crminial activities would be a national holiday.
I would think that you folks on the east slope would contact the tv stations for FOIA requests as to who is spending the money, and to monitor the truthiness of the ads…the Airwaves still belong to the American People, and the tv stations rent from us…We need the truth in advertising laws back…Sunlight is the best disinfectant…the Koch boys are slime…
How would one 'FOIA" a TV station? FOIA allows for the getting of public information–from governments, public officials, and administrative bodies.
You go to the station and look at the public log, which the stations are requiired to show you. Many have them online now. It shows who buys the ads, but most come through ad agencies, which are private businesses and not required to tell.
As for truthiness — this is teevee. What planet are you from?
The FCC decided last year to require TV stations to post their major ad buys online. I believe ProPublica has links to info volunteers have uploaded, through their "Free the Files" project. The preceding link goes to info for the Denver market – looks to be loaded around 2012. As much as Romney spent in Colorado Springs, which was then considered the country's hottest media market, we all know how that worked out.
Other than that, per the FCC rule, each station is supposed to post info about its own ad buys online. So far, no luck for me at either Fox or MSNBC.
There is no way to get at the source of dark money, from donor to donor fund to a warren of c3s, c4s, 527s; with ads–as your note–thru buying agents and such. Sleuthing can turn up tracks and such some times, but its basically shaded.
I was confused by the term 'FOIA.' Logs can be helpful, they already show some interesting buys I am told.
Springs can turn the whole state, which can be very important next presidential election. The Koch are spending stupid amounts of money on their local Koch Whores, but they are not being stupid about it. And, why would they care, this is chump change for them.
