  1. Air Force kills 5 combat soldiers in Afghanistan

A US B-1 stealth bomber accidentally dropped ordinance on a US position killing five American soldiers. The bombing is one of the deadliest incidents in Afghanistan in recent months and marks the deadliest friendly fire incident of the 14 year long war.

The US forces were returning from an operation when they were ambushed and subsequently an air strike was called in. The air strike missed the intended area and hit friendly forces.

Ghulam Sakhi Roghlewai, local police chief, said: “Isaf [International Security Assistance Force] troops were returning to their bases after an operation when they were ambushed by the insurgents. The air strike mistakenly hit their own forces and killed the soldiers.”

    1. A tragic error that is the nightmare of any pilot… The sooner we get the hell out of there, the better.

One note — this report is not completely accurate.  The B-1 is not a stealth bomber, the B-2 is.  The sortie was for close air support, something the B-2, stationed many thousands of miles away could not do.  Seems unlikely that a B-1 would have sufficient reaction time to respond as well.  Normally something like an F-16 (or even F-117) would be called in for this particular role.

Smart bombs, if they were used here, have extremely accurate targeting ability, so that would be a pilot or command error.  Dumb bombs, often used by F-16's, are unfortunately, less discriminating and harder to direct to the intended target.

  2. When is Udall going to start to pander to his natural constituency rather than the cable news hosts, the Economic Austerians (aka Roosevelts "Economic Royalists"), DC Insiders and WaPo Editorial Page writers?

The elderly vote, and they like their benefits. That neither political party has been pandering to them, except in the weird negative way of promising to screw the youngs has been just bizarre to me. It's a mystery to me how people are paid lots of money to tell candidates not to promise to give the elderly more and better benefits. I don't want politicians to lie, but even if they don't want to increase benefits it seems like the perfect pander!

It’s true that many Democrats remain reluctant to embrace the proposal. But an increasing number of Dems — including Elizabeth Warren, Tom Harkin, Jeff Merkley and 70 members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus — believe it’s good politics to push for an expansion of a hugely popular program that has been central to the Democratic Party’s identity for many decades.

How could any sensible politician be "reluctant to embrace the proposal"?

Yes, we are glad the R Clown Car is in full meltdown mode. Want D's to win. But also want D's to cut the bullshit triangulation stategery that was so effective 10-15 years ago and is so obsolete today.

                  1. Although Gessler would like to take credit, I think the SCORE project was completed under Bernie.  Its roots go back even further–all the way back to Gigi Dennis.  The contract was signed in September, 2006.

                1. Me too, Ralphie.  I completed my mail-in ballot this morning, dropped it off at the Yuma County Courthouse, took a shower – and will be back to unaffiliated soon as well.

              1. Understanding anything really isn't your strong suit, AC.  What is this obsession you have with Ralphie? Is it because he knows something about you?

            1. Never trust national media, of whatever form or persuasion, who parachute into a state, talk to a few of the usual suspects and then leap to a conclusion.

    1. Joke all you want, Republican legal challenges did in fact leave the Clintons millions of dollars in debt when they left the White House.

Of course, neither of them were exactly short of money-making opportunities or credit line, and they each capitalized on their opportunities – something that can't be said for the majority of people in debt. (Nor are most people in debt by the millions that the Clintons were…)

  3. Latest anti-fracking tactic: Lawsuits.

CELDF is counter-suing the state of Colorado, Governor Hickenlooper, and the Colorado Oil and Gas Association over the Governor's lawsuit against the fracking ban voted in last November.

My sources tell me that there are at least two more likely anti-fracking lawsuits in the, um, pipeline.

  4. Eric Cantor may be on the verge of becoming the ex-House Majority Leader.  With 76% of vote counted in his Cong. Dist. primary, he's trailing a tea bagger by about 6,000 votes.

  5. The downside of that is that he's trailing a teabagger.  How safe is that district for Republicans, and do the Democrats have a candidate who can win?  Otherwise, it's just more crazy in the House.

          1. McCarthy, who happens to hold Frank Underwood's old job, normally would be a logical candidate for majrotiy leader.  But according to NY Times, Tom Price of Georgia is complaining that the current leadership doesn't represent any red states.  Since McCarthy is from California and is perceived to be a RINO, he's probably not going to be the new majority leader.

      1. Here is hoping that they now degenerate into a vicious bloodbath in electing a new leader at the conclusion of which the most batshit crazy, bark-at-the-moon wing nut emerges victorious.

  6. Update:  AP has called Virginia CD 7 for David Brat (great name for a tea bagger).  Looks like John Boner doesn't have to worry about Cantor gunning for speaker anytime soon.
