  • by: Colorado Pols

POLS NOTE: Gordon "Dr. Chaps" Klingenschmitt won the HD-15 GOP Assembly vote by a 71% margin. He faces Dave Williams in the June 24th primary.

Christian host: Baking cakes for same-sex weddings is ‘the ultimate hate speech’ (via Raw Story )

A conservative Christian talk show host said on Tuesday that the “ultimate hate speech” would be to treat gay couples equally because it effectively endorses homosexuality, and “trips them into Hell.” Dr. “Chaps” Gordon Klingenschmitt, a…

      1. Holy . . . [shit]

        Holy? . . . Shit!

        ["Chaps" spouts]  (holy) Shit.

        Holy shit!

        . . . I guess it's all in the punctuation . . .

      1. They do know what their god is thinking,Ralphie. After all, they made him up. I don't think this is the same monotheistic god that most people revere. This is a particular, singularly focused god. It concerns itself exclusively with human sexuality. It's sort of like the inverse of a fertility god. It is totally sex-negative: No contraceptives, no abortion-ever. no same-gender relatoonships, no sex education, no sex just for pleasure and intimacy. Nothing but sex= pregnancy=endless children as punishment for sex.

        1. Certainly not the God that I believe in, who loves everybody and hates nobody.  They like to refer to John 3:16, but they seem to have forgotten what it says:

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

That doesn't sound like a hateful God to me.

          1. The GOP God is a different God. His will, fortuitously, just happens to be whatever the GOP wants at any given moment. He's a really helpful guy that way.

  1. Dr. Chaps???  That sounds like something Mr. Rocky Mountain Drummer or Mr. Colorado Leather will be wearing during the gay pride parade…..

  2. From what I understand "Dr." Chaps is a shoo-in for HD-15. He's also a regular subject on RWWatch. Are there any Republicans who are unwilling to be tarred with this guy's opinion? If so, what specific things do you disagree with? Notwithstanding any disagreements, would you vote for this guy because of his presumed fiscal conservatism?

    1. Well, lots of folks supported Hitler because, despite his hate spewing, they liked his economic plans. I don't consider this breaking the no comparisons to Hitler rule because I find the comparison between supporters apt here. Of course the level of evil in the man isn't at all the same but it's bad enough.  Decent people have to draw the line somewhere and that somewhere ought to be well short of a Hitler.  Republicans who vote for this guy are failing to draw the line where any decent human being needs to. Period. Regardless of his economic views.

  3. Updates on HD15:

Still no response on my FOIA request for Klingenschmitt's court-martial trial records. He still claims on his website that it was an honorable discharge, which, according to military.com bloggers, is technically true.

Klingenschmitt refused a direct order to stop wearing his Navy chaplain's uniform to political rallies, was reprimanded, fined, found to be insubordinate by his superior officer, Captain Norm Holcomb.  Klingenschmitt then sued for back pay and reinstatement of his honorable discharge. He may have been successful.

Klingenschmitt's opponent, David Williams, is almost as unsavory. An unashamed homophobe and apologist for (heterosexual) child sex offenders, Williams is attempting to capitalize on Klingenschmitt's less-than-honorable military history.

Meanwhile, the Democratic candidate for HD-15, Lois Fornander, retired teacher and small business owner, is finally beginning to campaign in earnest. Although HD15 is a predominantly Republican district, voters may be disenchanted enough with the GOP drama to cross the party line.

      1. HD15 : May 2014 voter registration data from Sos site.

        Republican: 18,164

        Democratic:7,768

        Unaffiliated: 13,629

        Greens, Libertarians, etc: 510

If Fornander gets a good portion of moderates and unaffiliateds, all Democrats, and Greens, she could win the seat. There would have to be a large undervote – people selecting "none of the above".

    1. Is he much worse than Charlie Duke, who once claimed to have heard Satan laughing in the rafters in the state Capitol?  (Me thinks it was just auditory hallucinations.)   Or David Schulthis?  Or Maryanne Tebedo whose son gave us Amendment Two back in '92?  Colorado Springs has a long, rich tradition of providing this state with exotic legislators…..

  4. Damn. We might actually have to put up with that insufferable asshat in our State Legislature?

It's bad enough that he regularly headlines the "stupid Republican quote of the day" news as a former – and famously discharged – military chaplain. If he's elected, blogs across the country will be featuring him on their "At Least He's Not Your State Legislator" series…
