Republidome!

They think they can (repeat mantra-style), as the AP reports:

Republicans will nominate former congressman Bob Schaffer on Saturday to run against Democrat Mark Udall for Colorado’s open U.S. Senate seat, hoping he can help them avoid another embarrassing loss in this swing state.

Republicans insist they can hold onto the seat after losses that included a U.S. Senate seat, a congressional seat, control of the state House, the state Senate and the governor’s office over the past four years. Schaffer and Udall are vying to replace Republican Sen. Wayne Allard, who is retiring.

“Colorado Republicans are motivated and excited to carry our state for Senator John McCain for president, to elect Bob Schaffer as our next United States senator, and to elect majorities in the Colorado state Legislature,” Republican Party state chairman Dick Wadhams said.

About 3,500 Republican delegates are expected to attend Saturday’s state convention and assembly in the Denver suburb of Broomfield on Saturday.

John Straayer, a political science professor at Colorado State University, said Schaffer’s problems are mounting with a focus on perceived ties to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff, his conservative voting record and links to big oil at a time when many Coloradoans are angry over soaring gas prices…

While in Congress, Schaffer voted to give the industry $13 billion in tax breaks.

Schaffer is now trying to portray himself as a self-described “moderate reformer” to appeal to unaffiliated voters, but his voting record in Congress is one of the most conservative of the past few decades.

Schaffer also has been dogged by reports that a trip he took to the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory, as a congressman was partly arranged by Abramoff’s firm…

    1. Is anyone “live blogging” this convention? I want to hear about this:

      As Lynn Bartels reports,

“I’m going to talk about what’s important to people,” Schaffer said Friday.

He will formally accept his party’s nomination during a 15-minute ceremony at the 2008 Colorado Republican Party assembly and convention at the Broomfield Event Center.

Did this involve an ermine cape and a scepter? Did they ask the children to leave the hall first?

        1. according to Lynn’s article (cited above).

Republican Senate candidate Bob Schaffer is going to be telling stories today, the stories he said he heard when talking to voters over the last year.

Their fears about health care, their worries about Democrats appointing judges, their pride in being Americans.

Slapstick Politics is live-blogging the convention. Includes some videos. I’m looking to see if Schaffer’s lips actually moved, or if it was the man behind the curtain reading his speech.

          1. Calls on the national press to tell the truth about “Barack Hussein Obama,” that he’s “nothing more than a younger, slicker version of that whacked-out mentor of his, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.”

      1. Animated butterflies and Alaskan Mountains?

So far that’s about all I’ve heard from schaffer; and I’m paying attention.

          1. of what the Ron Paul Republicans are upset about

I just attended the Colorado 4th Congressional District Convention today. And while we did not win any of the 3 delegate slots, I was very encouraged by what I saw there.

There were many of the “Old Guard” supporters in that room. It happens to be Colorado’s biggest district and it has a lot of Republicans in it. There were a lot of “we have to support McCain because he is the nominee…” crowd in that room. They were all of the mindset that “we have to beat the Democrats…” regardless of whether we put evil in the White House or not.

However, as can happen in any darkness, there were pinpoints of light that were shining through.

Carl Bruining, long a coordinator for the campaign in Colorado, got up and gave a strong speech about the Constitution, his service in the military and his support of our candidate. Carl has been at the forefront of this fight since summer 2007. Another person who was running as a delegate stood up and used the opportunity to call Republicans accountable for their poor decision in anointing the liberal in conservative clothing, McCain. He had to be removed from the microphone. One stood up and announced that he would never vote to nominate anyone who removed freedom of speech in the form of McCain/Feingold, or supported blanket amnesty. In fact, he would only vote for Dr. Paul and no other. Finally, one man boldly attempted to run against Congresswoman Musgrave for her seat in the house of Representatives. He was running as a Ron Paul Republican.

  1.    Anyone know if D.D.H.G.L.Q. was camped out all night at the Broomfield Events Center to get a good seat to hear Romney’s keynote address?

My guess is Schaffer will devote his assembly speech to that most pressing of all public policy issues…the overlooked threat to our national security posed by zip codes.

    1. That is the pressing of our time. I even read a letter to the editor about that in today’s paper, as if the DICK wrote it himself, how Mark Udall really is a Boulder Liberal and names like “Big Oil Bob” are unfair and untrue!

Children, please play nicely today in Broomfield…

  2. Bob Schaffer and the history he brings with him, both in his voting record and his “affiliations” are the perfect combination for  a republican candidate for the U.S. Senate. Fresh off his sterling performance managing the outstanding campaign of George Allen for the U.S. Senate/Virginia/’06, Dick Wadhams is the right campaign manager for Bob Schaffer. The perfect time for the perfect candidate and the perfect campaign manager.

  3. is another party’s bubble.

“Colorado Republicans are motivated and excited to carry our state for Senator John McCain for president, to elect Bob Schaffer as our next United States senator, and to elect majorities in the Colorado state Legislature,” Republican Party state chairman Dick Wadhams said.

  4. After an introduction by Bob Schaffer, Romney opens with a flat-out lie:

Wow, there are more Republicans here than in my entire state!

The crowd seems not to mind and cheers his falsehood.

    1. Schaffer says “let’s face it, we need to have a little bit of introspection.”

“We could sustain a little bit of reform within the Republican Party, too,” he said, noting he challenged President Bush on No Child Left Behind, and other Republicans on spending.

“A bad idea is a bad idea whichever party suggests it,” Schaffer said. “It’s just that that other party comes up with bad ideas more often than ours does.”

As for the Democrats, he said, “what they offer is not change –it’s just putting lipstick on a pig.”

Whoa! and then I’m reminded of this ad

    2.    He used that same tired old line at the El Paso County dinner last year.

His predecessors, Bill Weld and Paul Celucci were honorable Republicans who sincerely tried to build a two-party system in Massachusetts by appealing to indies and moderate Dems to cross over and vote for them.  They saw this as a long term process.

Mittens came along and decided that after running as RINO for Guv, he’d swerve to the right to run for president and in doing so, trash his state ever chance he got.  He knew that in doing this, he could never be re-elected.

It’s no wonder that when his Lt. Guv ran against Deval Patrick in ’06, she only got about 30-35% of the vote.

  5. Bob takes a shot at Boulder. For some running a STATEWIDE campaign, he sure does a good job of discriminating against voters by where they live.

His slogan should be, Schaffer will represent you… unless he doesn’t like where you live.

      1. .

I’ve told my sons that they don’t need to serve in the military,

that they made plenty of sacrifices already for the defense of the nation.

        I said that,

since they had to go without a Daddy while I was away from home due to Army service,

that their obligation was paid in full.

        You can argue with that,

but I did not want them serving and dying in a vanity war.

        …………..

        Well,

Bob Schaffer put a new twist on that cross-generational excuse for not serving in the military.

        He flipped it upside down.

        In this video,

I’m pretty sure he is excusing his failure to serve in the military by hiding behind his three children who are in college, preparing for the military in ROTC or the Air Force Academy.

        .

  6. Here’s a frightening tidbit from Jeremy Pelzer’s PolitickerCO live blog of the GOP convention:

Seen last night in the parking lot of the Westminster Westin Hotel: state Rep. Douglas Bruce (R-Colorado Springs) standing next to his black Cadillac, pantsless — apparently to change pants for dinner.

For those who are wondering, the TABOR author chooses briefs over boxers.
