Who to contribute to?

For those of us who’s last name is not Polis, Gill, or Stryker, we have to decide who to contribute to rather than donating to every candidate we like.

So my question is, who should we donate to? Below the fold is my take, but it has as many questions as conclusions. Note: This is on the general election, not the primary.

Obama/McCain – I think this is going to shape up pretty quickly as a blow-out. So I will donate a bit, but this is not the place for the big bucks. Same for Republicans – why waste money on McCain when he’s going to lose.

Now if this runs close, this is clearly the place to dump in the $2,300.00 max – for each side.

Udall/Schaffer – Udall’s won. More to the point, if he can’t win with the gifts he’s received already from Schaffer, he doesn’t deserve to win. And if he can, there is no need for us to put money here.

On the Republican side, again no point in funding a sure loser, especially one who seems determined to prove he can do a worse job than Both Ways Bob.

All except CD-4 – these are done deals (in the general). No point in putting any money in here. With this caveat – Hal Bidlack & Hank Eng are quality candidates we can be proud of. To encourage quality Dems to run in these districts in the future, we should each donate something to them, even if it’s just $10.00.

On the Republican side, same thing. Where you have a quality candidate you can be proud of, a small donation is a great statement.

CD-4 – This is the big federal race for us here in Colorado. I’ll keep making small donations as I watch to see how Betsy handles the mudslinging coming from MM. But if she handles it well, I will probably donate the full $2,300.00. This is where I think we Dems want to place our large bet.

For the Republicans I think this race is a quandry. Yes MM will need your full support to win. But she’ll need it again 2 years from now, and 4, and 6, and… Is this where you want to fight hard to hold on, or do you have better bets elsewhere?

Now we come to the state level. I think the top race for both sides to put their money in is Whitcomb vs Mitchell. It will be very very close. And both parites have a quality candidate.

But after that, who? I want to donate to candidates where my donation makes a difference between winning and losing.

I also don’t want to donate to someone who is an incumbent, should have an easy race, but doesn’t because of their mis-steps. We don’t need a MM type on our side requiring significant funds election after election.

I am fine with a race where the Republican will probably win, but the Democrat has a chance. First off, make enough bets with poor odds and one will win. Second, it forces the Republicans to invest moeny and effort in that race.

I also won’t donate to the person running against Al White. Al is the Republican’s sole thoughtful, moderate, effective Republican in the legislature from what I can see. We need to encourage the moderate Republicans to regain control of their party.

I believe the maximum donation is $200.00 $400.00 and I’m happy to do that for 2 – 5 candidates. But aside from Joe, who?

  1. I’ve already contributed to Obama and Udall, and will continue supporting them through November, but like David I’m also going to support Betsy Markey.

I’m also up for suggestions on who to support past that. Does Lundberg have an opponent?

By the way, the maximum donation is $400 and the Republicans have their own sugar daddies including Alex Cranberg, Bruce Benson, Pete Coors, and many more.

    1. James Ross

However, I don’t think he even has a website. Other than being a Poli Sci Prof at CSU I don’t know much about him.

I wish he had a website, it would show he’s more serious.  I think Lundberg is vulnerable, he’s a radical and his district is not.  Plus my mom lives up in estas and I’ve been thinking about moving up there (there are only about 6 practicing lawyers in the county), but I can’t if there a nimrod like Lundberg representing the place.

  2. But if they value their seat in CD4, they may need to make that donation, even if it’s a recurring one.

Letting a Democrat in to the seat may be a long-term loss for Republicans.  Better if they wait for Musgrave to move on, or primary her out…

  3. Like David said up top, Joe Whitcomb is the #1 race to support.

Prior to signing on full time with a community service non-profit, I worked for a while on Joe’s staff. I am under zero obligation to support his campaign at this point, but I still do; 100%. I have seen it from the inside and the outside, and I can tell you that Joe is the real deal.

        1. The President, “shall have power to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States, except in cases of impeachment.”

It’s that pesky little ‘except’ clause that could effect the validity of the pardon.

I have little faith that the political will exists to enforce anything, however.

  4. David, I hate to be nitpicky, but I’m newly unemployed. What else can I do?

I believe the proper title is “To Whom Should I Contribute?” You most certainly can’t use who in this context, I believe.

    1. I’m under employed so I don’t have much money either.  When I’m not down with whatever weird spring crud I’ve been fighting for the last four days I’ve been putting in some time with the party helping with phone banking and voter registration.  I’m going to contribute to the national/statewide campaign that way.  I’ll keep my pennies for local races where I cannot directly volunteer but want to help out.

      Matthew

      1. We all have different ways in which we can contribute. And feet on the ground is more valuable than money in many ways.

I do believe that if you are going to contribute something, you parcel it out as much as you can because number of contributors to a candidate is watched closely by the big contributors. In other words, $50.00 given to 5 candidates at $10.00 each is much more powerful than $50.00 to one.

  5. Lake County really, really needs to make some change and utilize new property tax revenue wisely. Many are quite concerned about a number of directions Lake County goes that squander money and opportunity. We have a chance to turn over 2 of our commissioners and I believe it is vital to accomplish.

  6. I appreciate your thinking of poor Republicans by encouraging them to save their pocketbooks in this time of great partisanship and economic need.  You’re a true gentleman.

    1. If you’ll note, in both the Obama/McCain and Udall/Schaffer my suggestion was both sides donate only if it’s close. And if it’s close, that both would.

I also suggested we both should be dumping money into the Whitcomb/Mitchell state senate race.

The only place I suggested an asymetrical approach might make sense was Republicans not donate to Musgrave and Democrats not donate against Al White.

Please re-read what I said without your assumptions pre-determining what I said.

  7. I have donated to Dianne Primavera twice already and will continue to donate.  She is a courageous hard working legislator.  She is in a tough targeted race but continues to run a lot of good policy every year and the R’s are looking to unseat her. She ran twice before she won and is in a very competative seat.  Plush she has a well run campaign and will use money wisely.

Other great legislators in tough races which I feel do really good work are Judy Solano and Sara Gaglardi. I have donated to both.
