Bob Beauprez Stands By His Man

  • by: Colorado Pols

We reported a couple of days ago about New Hampshire Congressman Jeb Bradley’s decision to return money donated to his campaign by now-indicted Rep. Tom DeLay’s Americans for a Republican Majority (ARMPAC).

That call to “return DeLay’s money” was picked up locally, forcing major ARMPAC funds recipient Bob Beauprez to go on the record in support of DeLay, as reported in today’s Springs Independent:

One of Beauprez’s colleagues, Rep. Jeb Bradley, R-N.H., already has returned $15,000 to the committee. Bradley told a newspaper in his home state that he wanted to remove any question about the nature of the contribution.

Beauprez spokesman Jordan Stoick says the Colorado congressman would not follow suit because ARMPAC is not under scrutiny. Stoick says Beauprez also stands behind his contribution to the legal fund.

“Rep. DeLay has not been found guilty of anything by anyone,” Stoick says. “Like any other American, Congressman DeLay is innocent until proven guilty.”

The League of Conservation Voters also is demanding that Beauprez return funds to ARMPAC, calling his decision to keep the money bad judgment, especially in light of certain votes Beauprez made for energy policies backed by DeLay.

We remarked before that Beauprez’s or Marilyn Musgrave’s decision to return this PAC money would be “symbolic” since it’s not directly tied to any alleged criminal activity: and we still think so. But in the middle of a pretty rough press week for Beauprez’s campaign, a clearer break with what will likely emerge as the main Democratic line of attack in 2006 certainly wouldn’t have hurt.

  1. As one who wants to see DeLay go back to Texas, I can see why BB is standing behind his friend and mentor—for now.

Loyalty counts for a lot in politics, and if you turn on a supporter when he’s down, others will remember.

The Bush family’s loyalty has given them two presidents. They know when to stand behind their folks and when to give them the boot.

It will be interesting to see whether BB has the political skills needed to send his DeLay boot through the uprights at the perfect moment in the game.

    Don

  2. Washington (AP) This evening former President Bill Clinton caught his wife Senator Hillary Clinton in bed with Representative Bob Beauprez (R Colorado).

Senator Clinton held responsible the vast right wing conspiracy.

Representative Beauprez claims he was just living out his wife’s fantasies to become the First Lady.

  3. Okay, you get the award for the biggest jackass and most clueless poster for the month.

Beauprez ain’t exactly known for loyalty, but he knows who feeds the kitty, and Delay is likely to be damaged but intact.

  4. We are proud here in New Hampshire that people recognize our fiscal responsibility and sense of accountability.

Senator Sununu recently called for trimming the pork to pay for the hurricane relief.

Senator Sununu listed areas where cuts can be made. It may be unpopular among the groups who get cut, but frankly their votes don?t add up.

  5. “Rep. Beauprez has not been found guilty of anything by anyone,” Stoick says. “Like any other American, Congressman Beauprez is innocent until proven guilty.”

Kiss your ass goodby. What are friends for?

  6. For every Jeb Bradley there are 50 other house members who don’t feel the need to return money that was obtained entirely within all campaign finance laws.  I’m on the sidelines with all the mudslinging in this primary, but I don’t see why any member would return Delay’s contributions, it’s as clean of cash as a Pelosi donation to DeGette.

And it’s truly a shocker that the League of Conservation Voters (the association of all environmental groups) jumped on the Democrat wagon to make political hay on Delay.  In 2004 LCV gave 79% of all their donations to Ds…

Finally, I also don’t see why Holtzman just went up on the Odds line, he’s looked just as bad as BB in all of this mud slinging.  I have to agree with the other comments that this blog is bent on propping up Holtzman.

  7. How about a compromise, Dropdead?  Beauprez goes back to the 7th CD, Holtzman goes back to Pennsylania where he runs again, unsuccessfully, for Congress, and Mike Coffman becomes governor?

  8. Tom DeLay will NOT be convicted. BB is right to stand by him, and ANYONE who gives the money back is a gutless coward.

Bush may do many dumb things, but no one has nailed him breaking any laws, and I predict never will. Ditto for DeLay. The looney left will realize after it’s too late that a message of personal destruction and anger wins ZERO elections. ZERO.

Silly DImoCRAPS, I hope you keep going down the road to destruction.

I just wish the GOP wans’t losing its way with spending and gutless moves like picking non-entities like Harriet Miers. I and much of the hard right are demoralized by that dumb move.
