Fitz-Gerald Unhappy with UFCW Over Ritter Endorsement

Democrat Bill Ritter received the first big endorsement of his campaign for governor two weeks ago when the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), one of the most influential labor unions in Colorado, gave him their endorsement. The endorsement was a blow to Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald, who is close to many labor unions and is still considering her own run for governor.

Fitz-Gerald, it turns out, was livid with the UFCW and its head, Ernie Duran, for going with Ritter, but it sounds like it was her own fault. Fitz-Gerald and the UFCW have a long history, with support and money, and Durant was waiting for Fitz-Gerald to call to ask him to either endorse her or hold off on a decision until after November. Even though Fitz-Gerald had knowledge that UFCW was considering Ritter, she never made the call to ask them to wait until she decided, and Ritter got the endorsement.

Fitz-Gerald is now saying that if she gets in the race for governor, the UFCW will do a dual endorsement as they did for both Rick Garcia and Rob Hernandez when they ran against each other for the Denver City Council. Even if that’s true, she might have had the endorsement to herself if she had waited. Politicians like to say that campaigns are a marathon, and not a sprint, but sometimes forgetting to sprint can cost you.

    I bet Jaon really goes ballistic when the SEIU jumps on the Ritter Train.
    What gall, what narcissism that Joan and Andrew display.
    Are support for C & D is just so essential we cannot consider our party’s caucus or our own futures. Come next Janaury their respective first names will be former —
    Former Senator and Former Speaker.

  5. Sorry for the typographical and grammatical errors.
    The point remains. Romanoff and Fitz-Gerald passed on the best chance they or any other Democrat will have of being elected Governor in order to run around talking to groups of under 100.
    Yet, they expect people to sit around and read their tea leaves and do nothing while they prattle about. Ritter is headed for the nomination. A lot of people could have stopped him. They chose not to do so.

  7. Perhaps Ritterltls and others are a bit oblivious to the political realities that are now associated with Ref C & D. Over 800 organizations and a good number of stakeholders have invested quite a bit of money into this whole operation. A huge political condominium has been built. If it all falls apart, there’s going to be hell to pay.

    Staying out of the Gov’s race until after Nov. 1st is the wisest thing to do — if political observers are too inpatient, maybe they should try picking up a sign and stop observing!

  9. Realitycheck-

    Waiting to get in the governor’s race until after the C&D election is smart, but that still doesn’t change the fact Joan is tripping over her own ego on this one.  I’m not sure whining about not getting an endorsement you’re not even eligible to get it is going to help.  I’d also like to know what planet her and her joint endorsement exist on.

  11. Reality Check –
    Condominiums — even political ones — often come with a small plot of outdoor space.  That’s where you tend your plants, get fresh air, and hang your birdhouses.  Enough with the metaphor:  Andrew and Joan are talented, smart people with enough wherewithal to both state a future intention, put it on the back burner, and deal with the present challenge.  If either one of them were serious about winning the governor’s race AND saving the party from a primary disaster, they would have stepped into the fray with both feet (or, continuing the metahphor, placed some potted plants on the patio) and then campaigned like heck for C and D.  It’s pretty obvious that C and D will usher in a vanity candidacy, if either Andrew or Joan gets in the gov’s race after its passage.  Bill Ritter has been the only D to display political courage in the G’s race.

  13. Condominium — brilliant.
    We have Ken Gordon walking across the State, but managing to make it back to Denver every night.
    Less than a dozen people are walking with him. I guess that is your foundation for the condo.
    Joan and Andrew have great talent but lack the guts or the vision to go big time. This time the Republicans are not going to nap and rely on the top of the ticket to carry them in.
    That is why come January 2007 the will be called former Speaker and Former Senator as I think that the Republicans have a decent chance of knocking Joan off.
    Building a condo that is rich. Is it modeled on the Be The Change grassroots organization that sounds good but does not exist?
