Whew! It’s getting tough to keep up with the Holtzman/Beauprez feud. Marc Holtzman’s camp fired off a response to Bob Beauprez’s release today that the allegedly stolen list of names was a common list. Here’s the release:
The Marc Holtzman Campaign branded as “absurd” today the claim by Congressman Bob Beauprez that he received the names from a highly valued Marc Holtzman email list from Gov. Bill Owens. “When you get in a hole, it might be best if you didn’t just keep on digging,” Holtzman Campaign Manager Dick Leggitt warned Beauprez.
“Hundreds of people on Marc Holtzman’s personal email list received the solicitation from Congressman Beauprez after the list was stolen from the Holtzman campaign. The Holtzman campaign is providing to prosecutors and will provide to reporters the names of those persons — not just four names as Congressman Beauprez has indicated,” Leggitt said.
“In fact, we are now in the process of contacting our entire email list of 6,500 persons to find the exact number of persons who have not given to Congressman Beauprez previously — and have made no donations or had no contact with Governor Owens,” Leggitt said. “People like Marty Rauch of Sarasota, FL, a personal friend of Marc Holtzman, who has never given to Gov. Owens or had any contact with other Colorado politicians — but did receive the Beauprez email.”
“Congressman Beauprez at this point has two possible courses of action,” Leggitt said. “Throw the person overboard who is responsible for this numb skull political move and apologize to Marc Holtzman and the people of Colorado, or dance and twist and turn with one false explanation or another while the hole he’s in gets even deeper.”

Okay, this is starting to sound as dumb as the BB folks predicted.
If they can’t come out with some proprietary e-mail address, they’re not going to get any credibility from me. I was one of the folks that explained in response to a question on an earlier thread how Holtzman’s campaign could have obviously caught any “theft”; so far, the allegations out of the Holtzman camp have been less than convincing. I hate having to state the obvious, but we’re not all poli sci majors on this board; some of us have tech jobs where we understand this kind of allegation.
To the Holtzman campaign: give us something real meaty, or you’re going to be laughed down to the bottom of the Governor’s line by the end of the week.
Why give it to some blog? Are you going to single-handidly investigate this like some vigilante? No – the right course is to turn the list they have over to investigators. And it sounds like that’s just what they’re doing.
When Mh campaign messed up – they admitted it and moved on. Why can’t BB do the same thing? Just say you blasted the wrong list and get over it!
Why give it to some blog? Because that’s where it is already! The Dead Guvs seem to be getting all the Press Releases; by the time the print media get around to it, we’ll have hashed it all out.
If you’re arguing in the court of public opinion already, at least give out useful arguments. Otherwise, it’s just another case of “make sure you spell my name right!” and for that, I’ll gladly hope that the papers pick up some critical analysis from this site.
Holtman over Ritter? Why would anyone give it the line I see here? If what you are projecting is true, then we do have a state of ideologues not paying attention to what is best for Colorado.
My Colorado issues:
Smart growth
Water management
high tech and tourism dollars
Support essential infrastructure, including education at all levels
Energy conservation … lead the national effort
The next shoe to drop will be Holtzman blaming Beauprez for stealing his wedding ring for his perpetual bride Kristen.
Marc time to pack the bags and head to New Zealand buddy your gig is up once again.
Yoda: Told you I did! Reckless is he! Now — matters are worse.
Obi-Wan: That boy is our last hope.
Yoda: No…there is another…
LOL @ james, nice one.
Volunteer – maybe because there’s nothing to apologize for?
BTW when Phoenix says you’re full of it, you are in BAD shape. 😉
Ya lost me with that one, James.
LOL James, anyone remember space balls? I’m thinking the next “doctored photo” is Marc in the Darth suit next to Mel Brooks.
So, when BB realizes he has a problem and apologizes, will MH be gracious and accept the apology? How far can MH go with this if he’s got the goods?
At what point will people get sick of it?
Lasting impact on either candidate?
If I’m a deputy DA in Morrisey’s office, I would probably deep six this one. I say:
(1) This looks like a civil matter to us.
(2) We don’t have a suspect and have more pressing investigation priorities.
(3) We aren’t sure that this is a trade secret or proprietary information since it isn’t used in a for profit business or something competing with a for profit business, and there are no monetary damages. Worst case scenario, a few thousand people got some spam that they shouldn’t have received.
Morrisey doesn’t have a horse in this race and has every reason to avoid the apperance of impropriety by favoring Zakhem who did legal work for his own campaign in the last election.
Not so sure on that analysis:
(1) Keyword: theft. This list (theoretcially) got out somehow; if it was an inside job, then you’re right. If not, anything from theft to wire fraud.
(2) True, that.
(3) There are definitely damages when the stakes are so high. Ask Dubya – that’s how he got his Supreme Court injunction back in 2000, from theoretical loss of office or somesuch nonsense.
If I was a DA getting this case, I’d want a whole lot more than Holtzman’s team’s been giving out to the public. With what I’ve seen, I’d bounce it on lack of evidence.
For the Love of God – please, guys – just walk away from this. Let the DA decide there’s no substantial proof, let BB apologose for something – anything, and MH apologise for jumping to conclusions.
If we keep this up – we’re all toast.
Calling on Tonner – where are you Tonner? Please come save this sinking Congressman…
Count this moderate as someone who feels our justice resources are better spent somewhere else and the public won’t remember this come election day.
However, it’s certainly created some fun here at this site.
Ok, I was intrigued by the possibility of people sneaking in in the cover of darkness in the Holtzman campaign but I should have known better… this actually this was campaign 101 list sharing. Other than the rabid Holtzman followers you all have to admit that Mark and his campaign look very foolish. I think the digging the hole reference his campaign manager used he should have heeded, to now say, crap our first four names are all explained we better go find some more makes this looks like the McCarthy hearings. I can hear it now from the Holtzman campaign, “Congressman when did you stop beating your wife and when did you quit being a communist?”. Beauprez camp would be well advised to begin dismissing this guy and not play his tit for tat acusation game. Rise above his gutter ball.
Holtzman on Peter Boyles show KHOW630AM 6:30-6:59 a.m. Wed. morning (via telephone):
Claims mailing list owned by him/campaign. Says many on the list in question don’t know Gov. Owens, were contacted by Bob Beauprez via email. Repeats claim that BB patrons Bruce Benson and Gov. Owens refuse to let BB campaign against Ref. C&D, hence BB muted against Ref. C&D; says Colorado voters deserve a Gov. candidate that takes a deliberate stand. Claims BB says different things to different audiences pro/con Ref. C&D.
When asked about charges that he lies, says “it’s all about Ref C&D.” Says he has a strong vision for Colorado including job creation (cites five years in Owens’ cabinet) and education reform including vouchers and merit pay.
(“Jeopardy” ad heard during break)
Illegal immigration: Marc agrees with Tancredo that CAFTA is flawed, bad public policy; BB voted for CAFTA but says he is against opening borders.
“Marty” solicited by BB (RMN Bartels article); has never met Owens or BB: list usage improper.
Job creation: Gov. is “salesman in chief.”
Declaring State of Emergency from illegal immigration? He hasn’t thought about it enough yet.
Pension liability funding for police and firemen? “mismanagement.” Talks about PERA to make a point: Ref. C&D money to be diverted to fund PERA liability?
Homestead exemption? Favors restoration; has nothing to do with Ref. C&D (where will he get the money?-ed.).
Marc fighting $5 billion tax grab. Ref. C&D supporters stooping to anything to attack opponents (he wouldn’t name names except Bruce Benson, Dean Singleton). Believes Denver Post is in this to discredit him and to support Ref. C&D; stories full of lies and distortions. Thinks RMN more balanced in coverage.
*COMMENT REMOVED
Unsubstantiated personal attacks are not permitted at Colorado Pols. Please be respectful.
So now Marc is attacking the new conspirator…..The Denver Post! This all makes sense a few of the news room reports held the ladder that Owens climbed to get in the window at Holtzman HQ then he opened the door so Beauprez could sneak in and steal the list that the Technology Czar had triple locked up. This guy has become a class one nut ball, the likes Colorado has not seen since Charlie Duke ran for Senate in 1996.
Pardon my typo’s have not had a mug of coffee yet this morning. I am starting to smell a rat in the chicken coup.
I think Marc Holtzman is a Democrat plant. This east coast yuppie waltz’s in to Colorado stirs up some excitement runs for Governor with his only goal to destroy the Republican Parties chance of winning next year.
This guy claims he was a deciple of Ronald Reagan yet all he has done from day one is spew venom at his fellow Republicans.
We better kick this rat out of our coup before he completley wrecks what is left of our house.
My two cents hopefully someone with higher horsepower than me will listen.
Bill Ritter must be laughing his ass off.
Joan Fitz-Gerald is caught like a deer in headlights with not a clue what to do. Her campaign team is a reprise of Gail Schoettler’s team except they don’t have a horse. Honey Fitz runs and is defeated for reelection and is never heard from again.
Prince Andrew is loving the debates around the state. He will wake up November 2 realizing that speeches to the North Natomas Kiwanis yield a nice pennnat with the club’s logo on it but not an ounce of political capital.
Andrew runs and wins reelection and is defeated for Minority Leader. But forever will have the honorific Speaker.
Bill Ritter could just be the Guv — when your opponents are scoundrels and cowards that is what happens
Its coop, my friends. Some of us get very nervous when republicans start talking about their coup.
So Holtzman has now released names of folks that say they have no conection to Owens, since the first batch all had connections to Owens.
Could it be that Beauprez has agreements with other candidates or has rented lists that have these names on them?
You are Marc Holtzman. You are about to file a complaint with the DA about a stolen email list. You know the first line of defense the other side is going to throw up. Their best one — the Gov gave me the list.
So you release four names that COULD be on the Owens list but there’s no other way BB could have them. Flush out the defense.
So BB takes the bait and throws out the cover story you expect. Then you hit back with a new name that Owens can’t have. Another round of free press that raises doubts about BB! And…How many other names have you got that Owens can’t have?
F***king brilliant!! These guys are pros after all.
If the plan’s really that well thought out, I wouldn’t be surprised if it includes monitoring comments on popular political discussion groups and sending a subpeana later to the website to get all the IP addresses that posted on the topic, so you can identify the BB/Owens staffers and drag them into court to find out what they know…. talk about killing staff time!
Watch out people!!
Pros,
Again, have you or the Holtzman folks thought about the possibility that the names that Holtzman threw out are on a list that Beuaprez got from a candidate other than Owens, rented, or purchased?
If the Holtzy folks were brilliant, (which, looking at the staff roster, I highly doubt) they would have waited and gathered evidence for a couple of months then pulled the trigger on these accusations about a month before the State Convention. That would allow the DA enough time to investigate and it would have kept the issue in the press because of the the pending convention.
I don’t literally believe Holtzman is a Democratic plant. But he couldn’t do a better job of ensuring a Democratic governor if he were.
Rule or ruin, that’s the Pennsylvania way.
PS Daddy, send another $100,000, I haven’t conned these stupid Coloradans yet.
Rule or Ruin, Slash and Burn, the rhetoric is getting pretty damn old by now. BB filed charges first and nobody EVER accused him of any of these tactics…
But wait, it’s different for MH, if HE does it all the sudden it’s a bad thing….
Those who live in glass houses……
Why do you suppose Phoenix Rising is getting in on this conversation? He can’t vote for either Holtzman or Beauprez in the upcoming primary, but he definitely has a stake in this.
He would like nothing more than to have both these guys bloodied up so his favorite socialist can become the next Governor. Phx is not alone.
Take note – J. Marshall and Leggitt.
The doctored picture thing was really stupid to make a big deal out of. The list thing is starting to sound as petty too. If you really have a case MH – don’t prosecute it in the press.
Lastly, you are both leaving yourselves open to vulnerability – I just hope we get a third credible candidate to challenge or we will lose to the Dems.
Rep, I agree. Holtzman and his staff have brought this campaign to record lows in record time. They just all seem so angry, and it’s gotten to the point where the media is feeding off of it to create controversy. If he doesn’t get out of the race, he’s just going to get the rest of us dragged through the mud…
ahh… the BB shills… how quickly you forget who started to throw the punches first.
First – the attack on their staff. Then the attacks on their Mail Piece. Then the attacks on his Reagan Credentials. It just went on and on… the personal vile coming from the BB/Owens/Benson trio was sickening and laced with lies and half truths.
Personally, I’m looking forward to another Christian Coalition piece coming out… what was that Marshall said? The “endorsement” was a “typo”? …this will be fun after all…
See, this is what I’m talking about. Anyone who says something ever so slightly critical of Holtzman is immediately zapped with the label of 1) a BB shill or 2) an idiot. You folks need to find some good precincts to walk, or do something productive. Really, get some exercise. Let out that anger…
I could care less about all the allegations that both sides of the MH / BB race have been making.
I am firmly undecided and will remain that way until 2 things happen:
1. Both Candidates and their campaigns stop acting like whiny brats that aren’t getting their way.
2. Both candidates start projecting themselves as in touch and available to average Republicans. And I don’t mean the 250.00 fundraisers, etc. either.
It is the candidates job to sell me on the concept of why they are the best person for the job and deserving of my vote.
Might I convince you to vote for Bill Ritter, Raiders?
Ritter is a former DA and is moderately pro-life. And in contrast to the two children in the GOP field right now, he’s kept his campaign attacks to actual policy issues.
(blatant plug just because someone noticed I had a stake in the issue 😉
Go Raiders – as much as I apprecite your team loyalty, the game isn’t about winning voters yet. This is all inside politics right now. It’s positioning into the gate. Pure and Simple.
Now – AFTER C and D – that’s when the real campain starts.
Sorry Phoenix,
Not Gonna Do it… wouldn’t be prudent at this juncture…
Inside,
I am going to have to disagree with you. This is about winning and losing voters right now. The more a candidate makes a complete jackass out of themselves now, the less likely that they will be listened to when their “real” campaign starts.
You might not be able to get votes now, but you can surely lose them.
Right on, Go Raiders. Unlike Phoenix I can vote in the Republican primary. But at the moment, i’m on track to repeat my 2002 vote for governor, which was Libertarian. Though if I decide to return to the real world, Ritter would definitely be worth considering. If Holtzman and Beauprez are so intent on destroying each other that they take the party with them, maybe McInnis should get back in the fray. C and D’s passage will totally discredit Holtzman and if Holtzman makes campaign fraud stick against Beauprez, the GOP has no viable candidate. Inside is smoking dope, real voters are listening now. Go Raiders and I are two examples.
Bob Beauprez on Caplis & Silverman Show KHOW630AM 6:30 p.m.? – 6:59 Wednesday evening (Sorry, I missed the first part and just caught BB’s presence before the break)
(“Both Ways Beauprez Jeopardy!” ad heard during break 6:45 p.m.)
BB on Jeopardy ad: Marc taking negative tone, saying BB not a friend of the taxpayer. Au Contrare: many taxpayer awards. Both will mark ballot the same against C&D, both have spoken out against C&D. Critical of Marc’s approach attempting to destroy an incumbent Republican.
Chris Gates: Marc’s approach is desperate. BB: I’ve ignored much of what has come out of Marc’s campaign, but have to respond when legal issues are raised to defend myself.
Silverman: bridges burned? BB: no, I don’t think so. I get along with Mike Feeley.
Gates: Is this worse than the Feeley campaign? BB: This feels different, that was political, this is personal.
Silverman: have you reached the point of no return, with Scott McInnis ready to step in if BB withdraws? BB: official announcement I’m in the race is forthcoming (announcements overrated, actually official when papers are filed). I have campaigned statewide already, no turning back. I’m in this to win.
Caplis asked for first debate between BB and Marc.
*******
Apologies for minor errors of fact/dialogue, but it’s hard for me to type and listen to the next part of the conversation at the same time. I hope I accurately got the gist of remarks and didn’t mischaracterize anybody’s comments.
The Colorado Republicans need the Wilford Brimley Asst. U.S. Attorney Gen. character in Absence of Malice http://wb.imdb.com/title/tt0081974/ to mediate this squabble (see additional quotes).
