Udall/Schaffer Cheering Sections Get Out of Hand

  • by: Colorado Pols

UPDATE: Where are those details? Come on, we’re hockey fans. We want blood.

We’re getting reports that the crowd outside today’s scheduled debate between Senate candidates Bob Schaffer and Mark Udall at 29th and Welton Streets got a little too boisterous, leading to a slightly more-than-usual physical confrontation. We await forthcoming details.

  1. Bob Schaffer’s crew was vile. They had nothing good to say about their own candidate, as usual. Just hateful and untrue things to say about Mark Udall. Their only pro-Schaffer chant was “Vote for Bob Schaffer, Udall’s a wafer.” I’m not sure what they were going for with that. Mark Udall is the Body of Christ?

The shoving started and ended early, only to pick up a little later. One of Schaffer’s supporters (a woman) didn’t like the old guy carrying the Udall sign. I guess she thought he was too close, because she spun around and shoved him. A Udall staffer just gently moved the old fellow to another location before he had a chance to react.

When Udall arrived, he was surrounded by a crowd of his supporters, infiltrated by a Schaffer goon with a bullhorn and a couple of other goons with ugly signs, when Schaffer’s press secretary shoved her way into the crowd to retrieve the goon squad so that Schaffer would have some supporters following him as he arrived right behind Udall.

It was a total embarrassment for Schaffer. This is supposed to be a United States Senate campaign. It should have a level of dignity and decorum far higher than Schaffer is willing to aspire. Schaffer’s campaign seems to be run by the College Republicans who think that juvenile street antics and faux protests is a substitute for intelligent debate on the issues that we face.

At least this time–unlike the Fox 31 debate–there wasn’t a crowd of old people looking for the luncheon they were invited to by the Schaffer campaign (which turned out to be a couple of stale old pizzas in a field across the street).

Udall’s supporters were raucous but positive. Not a single negative sign or chant about Bob Schaffer, and lots of cheers and signs for their candidate. The firefighters were there with two antique firetrucks lending their support to Udall.

And as hard as I looked, I did not witness a single forced abortion the whole time I was there.

      1. My slow camera missed the press secretary, but here’s a nice photo of a Schaffer girl attempting to shove signs in Mark Udall’s face while a less than cooperative Vietnam veteran blocks her from doing so:

The goon with the bullhorn is right behind Udall and it was right after this that Schaffer’s wayward press secretary bulldozed her way into the middle to fetch her people so they could greet Bob. All the while Udall’s supporters were chanting “Senator Udall” while Schaffer’s supporters were chanting “U-turn Mark” and “broken promises.”

A real class act that bunch. And Bob Schaffer is heading up the pack. Vince Carroll says “cut it out.” Indeed.
