Candidates deserving an A for effort

  • by: DavidThi808

Ok, we have a lot of races here where the odds so strongly favor one party that candidates in the other party are on a Don Quijote-isque quest.

But some of them are in it to win. They’re putting in the time, they’re raising the money, and in a perfect storm, they could win.

At a minimum, these people deserve our heartful thanks. Competitive races are an absolutely critical foundation of our democracy.

So list your mentions for these candidates.

  1. I am really impressed with the job Hal is doing. If the numbers weren’t so lopsided, he would be very competitive based on the effort he is making and the money he is raising.

And even as it is right now, Doug Lamborn does seem to be at least concerned.

  2. Both of our County Commissioner candidates here in JeffCo are working extremely hard to help take the county back into Democratic hands for the first time in 20 years. They’re both walking every weekend and connecting with voters across the county. Of course, with inept opponents (at least in district 2), these races aren’t quite as competitive as one may think.

Camille Ryckman in HD-22 has a fight against Republican Ken Summers, but she’s incredibly bright and talented, and is a hard-worker to boot. Don’t be surprised if 22 is a pick-up for Ds in the house.

      1. Both can and will probably win, but it’s still a competitive race because of the lay-out of the county.

I know quixotic, and it’s certainly not the term I would use in either of those races.

  3. In an obvious reference to Sarah Palin’s speech – The diff between a pit bull and a hockey mom is lipstick.

Obama today said you can put lipstick on a pig but it is still a pig.

I will not be supporting Obama any longer.  That is the most sexist comment I have ever heard.  First he trashes Hillary – which I have barely gotten over.

But now to trash Palin’s historic accomplishment…

I will have to cross party lines.

I am voting for Sarah Palin!

      1. I don’t think Obama is doing women any good here attacking Sarah Palin.  The sarcasm is on Obama’s end – not mine.  After he trashed Hillary – I forgave him when Hillary made such a compelling speech to support Obama.

        But this I cannot forgive.

I am seeing a pattern here!

          1. But know that lipstick on a pig is a common old expression for trying  to dress up something that’s crap.  If this was used in reference to a policy it shouldn’t be a problem.

As for Nancy L Baldwin, if one remark is enough to get her to vote for someone who stands with the far right on all the issues, well what can you say?  Suddenly, healthcare, foreign policy, the  occupation of Iraq, nuclear proliferation, the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, fighting el-Qaeda and Bin Laden where they actually are, economic policy, the right to choose, education, energy independence, green energy, global warming, tax breaks for 95% of us all just don’t matter anymore?  What a twit.

    1. Have you overcome your attack of the vapors?

“Lipstick on a pig” is an old saw about not being able to polish up something course. Obama did not make this up.  It is not sexist.  It can be applied to a man, too.

And if that’s all it takes for you to change your vote, you are mighty fickle.  Will you switch back when Palin makes a faux pas?

In fact, it seems that in your short time here on Pols, you’ve been all over the map.

        1. from Crooks & Liars – this is a joke John McCain told:

Did you hear the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die? When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, ‘Where is that marvelous ape?’

Good thing that’s not as serious as Obama’s comment or you might have to change your mind again <sarcasm-off>

          1. Actions speak louder then words.  McCain asked a woman to be VP.  Obama trashed Hillary and now he is trashing Palin.

Why couldn’t he just run his race with a positive message.  He seemed like he had so much to offer.  Then this.

        2. But if you must vote for a candidate which will outlaw abortion, has voted against equal pay for equal work, and will continue the financial policies that have come close to detroying  the USA, then by all means vote for the Republican ticket. We will have a depression and no rights for women.

Did you see Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (and Sarah Palin’s ingnornace of them in Colorado Springs)fell to less than $1.00 a share?

Have you seen the price of GM, Ford, Ambac and Lehman Bros?

        3. He’s the one who told this “joke”: Why is Chelsea so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno.

So, if you really cared about Hillary Clinton’s candidacy, or about sexism, you would rather cut off your voting finger than push that button for McCain.

That is, if trolls like you have fingers.

      1. Of course, if we do want to “go there” on the ‘lipstick on a pig’ remark, Palin is pretty adept at porking up the Federal budget with her own pet requests.  I’ve already seen at least one cartoon to that effect – and I think it predated Obama’s comment.

Nancy – have fun justifying your decision to yourself.  Your “new-found” chosen candidate and his running mate are lying, lobbyist-loving, power-tripping, corrupt bastards.  And given McCain’s latest anti-Obama ad, that’s being kind.

        1. Of course, McCain’s whining about a non-existent slur is a lie.

Ari Melber writes from the trail:

I was sitting in at press table in the Virginia gym as Obama rattled through two cliches to argue that the McCain/Palin ticket could not deliver change. First, Obama reached for a farm analogy: “You can put lipstick on a pig,” he said. “It’s still a pig.” Then he said, “you can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It’s still gonna stink.”

The pig cliche went from Politico to Drudge before Obama had left the stage.

The McCain camp pounced with an emergency conference call, and the press corps unthinkingly dug into the story.

McCain surrogate Jane Swift accused Obama of talking about Palin and demanded an apology. Swift said she thought Obama was referencing Palin because she is the only candidate who wears lipstick. I guess that means no one can take offense at the fish analogy, since none of the candidates are wrapped in newspaper.

Noting that he praised McCain for naming a woman to the ticket, Melber cuts to the chase:

McCain’s overall conduct is more significant than that one action, however. His cynical attempt to cloak his ticket in gendered victimhood is an offense to all women and men who value equality – and to any voters who still desire a campaign devoted to a truthful debate of the issues.

If Nancy is a plant, it’s part of the same disgusting, cynical ploy. If she’s serious, then she deserves a McCain-Palin administration.

    2. note to the mccain campaign- try the denver post blog or rm news or something if you actually want to be effective with this campaign tactic.  I’m sure you are already doing that but seriously you are wasting your time here.

I think I was just about the only Hillary supporter on this blog, at least as far as I can remember, that posted about it anyways, and I am voting for Obama, so you can move along

      1. Enough examples were given during the primary to validate sexism charges against the Obama campaign and the MSM.  However, I don’t believe Sen. Obama’s “lipstick on a pig” comment was aimed at Gov. Palin.  Of course the comment is inherently sexist in and of itself and just because it is in common usage doesn’t excuse that.

  4. in one of the north Colorado Springs senate districts (12?).  He seems to have convinced a number of locals that he’s got a shot at winning the thing.  It would be great if he did.

  5. I would assume she is speaking of a female pit bull, therefore, all hockey moms likened to bitches…

You can’t have it both ways.

side note – my female pit bull, Madison, who is also disabled (deaf) is very upset that she has been compared a wing nut like Palin.

She wants to know what her rights are on setting the record straight.

She has seen Gov. Palin and, “she is no Pit Bull. Chihuahua, maybe, yapping like a big dog, but afraid to get in the fight.  She is shaking like a coward every time the press wants to come near her”, barked Madison.

Madison states she is upset because these are not the qualities of a true Pit Bull.

Madison says if she (Madison) was running for VP, she would face the press, bring on the nay sayers – Madison would stand on her principles and tell the world what she believed.  Madison hides from no dog! The same can not be said for Palin.

    1. I want to be able to show my daughter that she can do anything.  Not just say it.  Sarah Palin is a great role model for women all over America.

It is obvious that the Democratic party has left behind the great things it once stood for all over one issue.  My vote is bigger then just abortion.

All of you one issue voters are welcome to go that route – but I think the rest of America is broader then just one issue.

          1. An adulterer (McCain) and a child abuser ()Palin) than Obama? Have at it!

Newsweek and CNN are both reporting that Palin and her family were warned that their constant badmouthing of her former brother-in-law was akin to child abuse. If you prefer a child abuser in the White House, then that’s your choice, troll.

      1. Then you might start, rather than by pointing to Palin’s VP candidacy, then by selecting models of integrity.  There are plenty of female world leaders to point to, and frankly in retrospect Geraldine Ferraro was as well-qualified to be VP as Palin is today.

Why would you ever want to tell your daughter, “see – look at Sarah Palin.  All she had to do was lie and be female, and she got all the way to the Naval Observatory.”  Frankly, Palin was a better example before McCain picked her – back when her reputation as a reformer wasn’t quite so sullied by the facts.

Women have been Queens, Prime Ministers, and Presidents the world over.  In any other year, against any other candidate, Hillary may very well have been in the White House come 2009.  You don’t want to one-issue vote?  Well, that’s what you’re doing – assuming, and I don’t believe it, that you’re really voting on this one issue.
