El Paso County Commissioner Darryl Glenn pulled off one of the biggest political upsets in recent memory at the Republican State Convention on Saturday.
Glenn absolutely dominated the voting for the GOP Senate race, capturing 70% of the vote in a four-way race to earn the top spot on the June 28th Primary ballot. More importantly, Glenn was able to keep three other Republican challengers from making the ballot altogether, ending the 2016 Senate campaigns of Tim Neville, Peg Littleton, and Jerry Natividad.
How did Glenn pull of such a big victory? Much of the buzz on Saturday centered around Glenn’s red-meat speech to Republican delegates, which you can watch in its entirety below. We’ll have much more analysis on the U.S. Senate race shortly, but in the meantime, here is “The Speech”:

This is not the first time this has happened at a Republican Convention in Colorado. The two that most come to my mind are John Cogswell in the 1980 US Senate race (ending his rousing speech with a recitation of the pledge of allegiance) and Vickie Buckley, a low level employee of the Secretary of State's office who knocked off a couple of heavy weights to be the only Republican on the ballot. Cogswell came in fourth in a four way primary contest and Buckley who was a nice enough person, turned into one of the worst Secretary's of State. Hmmm.
Do you remember what became of her, Craig? She died several years ago of a heart condition; it calcified-literally turned to stone. Just think about that for a minute.
It's encouraging that we have a political system in Colorado where individual speeches can still matter.
I'm already liking this guy …
… if only for the fact he's the reason I'm no longer forced to vote for Bennet just to keep Neville out of the Senate!
