Colorado Pols in the News

  • by: Colorado Pols

The Grand Junction Sentinel quoted Rutt Bridges’ comments in the Colorado Pols comments section yesterday regarding his decision to back out of the governor’s race.

In a posting on the Web site www.Coloradopols.com, Bridges responded to speculation that he was forced out of the race.

“Just so everyone knows the facts, this was a very personal decision and not a response to anyone else saying they were getting into the race,” Bridges said in the post. “The reasons Im getting out are exactly the ones I put in the press release.”

  1. Question:  How can a newspaper be confident that a commenter on a blog is who he says he is?  I suspect that really was Rutt Bridges, but newspapers like the Sentinel should be careful not to give too much credibility to blog comments unless they have verified the identity of the poster.

  2. Don’t get me wrong–I think it’s fine for the papers to refer to this site when they’re reporting on the various political rumors circulating in the state.  But if a newspaper is going to pull a quote from the comments and claim that a prominent politician said it, they would be wise to confirm it first.  The Rutt Bridges comment was pretty innocuous, so even if it wasn’t him, no big deal.  But I could imagine a scenario where a newspaper would be pretty embarrassed if they didn’t do some checking (and a politician would be really pissed off).

  3. That’s exactly what I was agreeing with Anonymous.  Perhaps they did check with Mr. Bridges.  Didn’t seem like the case though based on the info provided here.

  4. The Daily Senile – as we on the Western Slope fondly call it.  Is one of the most wreckless and unethical papers in Colorado.

You all, just got a small glimpse of what we have to deal with on a daily basis over here.

  5. It is bad to quote a Blog that is entirely written by 4 or 5 people who themselves are anonymous.  Then hope that the person responding to the blog is not anonymous.  But I am sure that is what they did.

    FULL DISCLOSURE:
For those with no sense of humor – the guy posing to be George above – was me “Dark Horse” (if that really is my name).  And the comments I made were a matter of opinion – mine.

After all, nobody is REALLY anonymous in cyber space.  The Sentinel thinks they are the only ones entitled to Free Speech.

  6. As Editor-In-Chief of the Sentinel I would like to assure everyone that we only report the facts and not rumors. Facts are our business and when it is news, we report it. Colopols is news and those who post on here are newsworthy and certainly crediable sources. If you don’t like my paper, then don’t buy it. I don’t care. It is you the readers that must determine in your own mind if what we print is news or not news. The facts are what they are and the opinions will stay on the opinions page. Thanks for reading and we will see you in the news.

  7. Full Disclosure: Since the Sentinel can’t take a joke…the post by the grand junction sentinel was me…Buggs. If you can’t take a joke, don’t report it and stay off the website. See you on Looney Tunes! BB
