The Rocky Mountain News finds time to report:
A bill requiring identification for urban cats, which House Minority Leader Mike May said yesterday may be the dumbest bill of the legislative session, passed through a House committee today with bipartisan support.
Rep. Cherylin Peniston’s measure would require cat owners in cities of 100,000 or more to put a tag on or a microchip inside their cats for identification purposes. A few Front Range cities already have similar laws in place, but most don’t…
Some of the committee members hissed at a provision in the bill that would identify anyone who lets cats hang around on their property as owners of the felines. But Rep. Cindy Acree, R-Aurora, amended House Bill 1019 so that only people who feed cats that frequent their homes can be considered their owners.
Three Republicans teamed with five Democrats in passing the bill onto the House floor. Only Cortez GOP Rep. Scott Tipton and Walsh Democratic Rep. Wes McKinley, who asked several times if property owners could shoot unwanted cats that hang out on their land, opposed it. [Pols emphasis]
We also love the idiotic, and thankfully deleted, provision that would have made you responsible if you “let a cat hang out near your home.” What, were you supposed to have a conversation with the cat? Should you reason with it?

Sorry Sal.
by the by what is the fiscalnote on this license your pussy bill?
but would this apply to strictly indoor gatos?
If so, do you need to drag that pussycat over the front stoop after you shoot it?
…for everyone’s sake, especially the cats’, give it up.
“test” was a test post … do you think sometimes you read too much into what others communicate?
…and regardless of whether the bill is funny, your clumsy attempts fall flat. I would say “don’t quit your day job,” but I don’t want to step in it, given that you may be unemployed.
or metro areas that have more than 100,000 but are comprised of cities that have less than 100,000 peeps, with a cat that lives on the border between two such cities?
perhaps we just RFID crazy cat people (who have more than 12 felines…)
Personally, I think that RFIDing state legislators might be a good idea too. Then we can stay out of their way as the speed over the divide to a luncheon and make sure they show up to work. Or maybe we just RFID the lobbyists that feed these critters?
Finally, if PETA is successful at changing the name of fish to ‘sea kittens’ how does this fit in? Will we then need to RFID the former fishies (if they are ‘fed’ by humans?
impacted:
Denver, Colorado Springs, Aurora, Lakewood, Fort Collins, Thornton, Arvada, Westminster and Pueblo. The City of Centennial would be just under 100,000 in population and not covered.
Also, some of the cities, presumably, already have pertinent ordinances.
I supported Joyce Foster in the primary, and I was really hoping that the first thing I heard her name associated with was not something stupid like this.
We have bigger problems to deal with than people who have 50 cats.
and our legislators are wasting time and effort on kitty litter like this bill? Do the Dems really want to hold onto power in the Legislature, or will they squander it away on garbage like this?
Is the point of this bill to avoid getting around to serious issues? As a Dem, I find it embarrassing that bills like this are ALWAYS proposed by Dems.
all the time. Before and after she switched parties.
I swear all common sense is lost. Does anyone in government prioritize or how about working with a sense of urgency? Cat ID tags isn’t at the top of my list of concerns right now. I thought young people today didn’t have a clue but I am beginning to realize that I don’t have a clue about what the heck is going on anymore and why!
