Reverend (Congressman) Ted Haggard?

  • by: Colorado Pols

An AP story from yesterday afternoon is certain to ramp up the speculation regarding Rep. Joel Hefley’s retirement plans.

Haggard’s values, including opposing abortion and same-sex marriage, would fit the district’s conservative profile. He said he would consider a run only if Hefley steps down and he couldn’t comfortably support another candidate.

Hefley has represented Colorado’s six-county 5th Congressional District since 1987. The 70-year-old has denied deciding to retire, but the list of possible replacements already is long.

State Sen. Doug Lamborn, R-Colorado Springs, Colorado Springs Mayor Lionel Rivera and El Paso County Commissioner Wayne Williams, among others, have expressed interest.

Our view is that this story wouldn’t even exist if the Hefley retirement rumors weren’t credible. He’s outta there.

  1. So just how many of the potential CO-5 candidates could Haggard “not comforatably support”?

If he’s not opposed to Hefley, who at least has the ethics to rebuke DeLay when he does something wrong and is not generally in the forefront of “moral” debates, is that just because he’s a 5-term incumbent, or does it indicate some flexibility on Haggard’s part?  Unless a potential replacement needs to have that ethical detatchment from party to meet his comfort level, I’d say Haggard’s just venting gas.  Or he’s concealing a real desire to run for the seat regardless of “comfort” level.

  2. How about Mrs. Hefley she is term-limited in 06, she can take over where her hubby left off. Nothing like name recognition, just ask Mrs. Clinton how it worked for her.
This is not an endorsement it is just a speculation.

  3. Running a church is a lot different from running CD 5. The money is there, but so is the “baggage”. This coming from a staunch republican conservative. It’s kind of like Rush Limbaugh running for Senate. Sometimes you can be more effective from your current position rather than trying to gain credibility in the political arena. Preaching to the choir is one thing, convincing the voters, well…

  4. That would be interesting if he jumps in. This would mean he would pull votes away from Doug Lamborn.

Wayne Williams doesn’t have a prayer. No one really likes him.

Lionel Riveria would be a perfect Lt. Governor candidate and if offered, I am sure he would take it.

Rumor has it Joel would endorse and support Jeff Crank as his replacement.

The 5th just doesn’t serve El Paso County. There are other Counties out there who belong to it. No of them, except Jeff Crank has been in the other Counties.

This certainly would be an intersting twist.

  5. I am hoping that Jeff Crank takes CD 5.  He is a great Republican which is what El Paso County needs right now.  He’s not into playing party politics he’s very straight forward and honest. And he’s all about his family coming first.  Awesome guy.

  6. Why isn’t there more publicity in your country about David Griffin’s book “the New Pearl Harbor?”. It disputes some of the results of the 9/11 investigation and the background behind the attack.
Have you read it and has it been discussed in your department?
I live in Canada am a senior and am very interested in American politics and the truth.
