McCain, Graham Lead Questioning on Russian Hacking Allegations

  • by: Colorado Pols

As the Washington Post reports:

The country’s top intelligence official said Thursday that Russia’s meddling in the 2016 presidential campaign consisted of hacking, as well as the spreading of traditional propaganda and “fake news.”

“Whatever crack, fissure, they could find in our tapestry . . . they would exploit it,” said Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper Jr., testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee on foreign cyberthreats, and especially Russian hacking and interference in the campaign…

…Every American “should be alarmed by Russia’s attacks on our nation,” McCain said at the opening of the packed hearing.

“There is no national security interest more vital to the United States of America than the ability to hold free and fair elections without foreign interference,” he said.

Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) asked Clapper if he was ready to be challenged by Trump, and Clapper said he is. Graham also advised Trump, “Mr. President-elect, when you listen to these people, you can be skeptical, but understand they’re the best among us and they’re trying to protect us.”

    1. War, no.   But Trump's BFF Putin should face crippling economic sanctions until he recognizes the sovereignty of Ukraine and withdraws his troops from that embattled nation.

  1. "no nastier man……."  Of course, anyone who dares to challenge the party line from Trump, Putin, and their minions is deserving of being called all epithets in the dictionary.

I wonder if Trump/Putin apologist, Powerful Pear/Prune, has ever visited the Baltic States, Poland, and Ukraine? Probably not. I've been to all in the past two years, except Ukraine, and the people REALLY value no longer being under Russia's big thumb.

    1. McCain this AM said that Russian hacking was an act of war. Are you ready for that step? McCain has long been an ill tempered know it all maverick jerk, I would add more but then you would claim I was redundant. You just have not been paying attention.

Travel is a wonderful thing, it broadens one perspective. Mine includes SE Asia.

      1. "Mine includes SE Asia……"  If you served in Vietnam during that war, my commendations. I've been paying plenty of attention. McCain is one of the few Congress critters who has the backbone and courage to tell it like it is.

"Are you ready for that step?……."  I think outgoing President Obama is covering "that step" already. Just because what the Rooskies have done is called an act of war doesn't automatically mean that we sending the planes, tanks, and ground forces to invade Russia.

    2. Russia's energy companies Rosneft and Gazprom are pulling the strings here – from Trump's selection of Exxon CEO Tillerson as Secretary of State to Arctic drilling that can't happen without US sanctions being lifted, to the annexation of Crimea , to supporting Assad and pacifying Turkey, it's all about the supply and movement of Russian oil and gas.

It's only a matter of time before Putin, emboldened by the Trump Administration's support,  moves on Ukraine again. Gazprom has too many gas supply lines to protect throughout the Ukraine

When / if that happens, It will be miserable for Ukrainians, Lithuanians, or Baltic states, but it will be ridiculously entertaining to watch Trump try to explain and defend his BFF's aggression.

I don't agree with McCain about much, but I do applaud his standing up to Russian corporate interests that advocated for the Trump presidency.
