What you can do to fight back this week

  • by: ProgressNow Colorado

These are the largest protests in American history. The resistance to Donald Trump since his inauguration on January 20th has exceeded the expectations of the entire world, and is already remaking the story of Trump’s presidency. There has never been a President in our modern history so unpopular so soon after taking office. Every harmful action Trump takes is resounding answered by millions of Americans who declare with one voice that he does not speak for us.

And our protests are working.

Every week, the resistance builds–across America and right here in Colorado. Last weekend, thousands of Coloradans marched to defend the rights and dignity of our Muslim neighbors and friends. Another huge crowd of teachers gathered outside Sen. Cory Gardner’s office to demand he reject Trump’s disastrous nominee for Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos. Still more gathered in the freezing cold last week to fight back against the nomination of far-right Colorado Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. In the Colorado legislature this week, we face a battle to stop a new round of anti-abortion legislation and corporate influence on our politicians.

Thank you for everything you are doing. Every phone call you make, every email you send, every sign, every march, every protest. It matters. It all matters. Here are more opportunities to take action for the week of February 6th:

Love Knows No BAN No Walls Vigil 2017

We’ll see you at the Love Knows No BAN, No Walls Vigil on Monday, February 6th, 6:00-7:00 pm at the ICE Detention Center at 30th & Peoria in Aurora, CO. You won’t want to miss the young people sharing letters to parents who are affected by detention or deportation.

Where: GEO Aurora ICE Processing Center, 3130 Oakland St, Aurora, Colorado 80010
When: Monday, February 6 at 6 – 7:00 pm.

Say NO to Trump’s #SwampCabinet and #NoBanNoWall

Tuesday, February 7, MoveOn members across the country are rallying Democratic and Republican senators and representatives to stop Trump’s #SwampCabinet and to say: #NoBanNoWall! Progressives need to use every tool in their toolbox to delay and stop Trump’s nominees who are looking out for their own interests at the expense of the rest of us.

Where: Skyline Park next to Sen. Gardner’s Office, Corner of 17th St. and Arapahoe St.
When: Tuesday, February 7 at 12:00 pm.

Save My Care Bus Tour

Spend your Tuesday lunch break standing up for health care! Join the #SaveMyCare bus at the Colorado State Capitol tomorrow as we keep sending the message that Americans depend on their care.

Where: Colorado State Capitol, Denver
When: Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 1 – 3:00 pm.

We Are One Colorado Tour: Denver

One Colorado, the state’s leading LGBTQ advocacy group, is conducting their “We Are One Colorado” tour “to talk about how to build on — and protect — our victories and continue to advance equality for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer Coloradans and their families.” It’s more important than ever that Colorado lead on these issues.

Where: Clocktower Cabaret, 1601 Arapahoe St, Denver, CO 80202
When: Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 6 – 7:30 pm.

On Saturday, February 11, the tour will arrive in Grand Junction. Click here for details.

Right-wing Lobby Day 2017

On Thursday, February 9th, the far-right Koch-funded group Americans For Prosperity is conducting their “Lobby Day” at the Colorado Capitol. Conservative legislators and activists will be present to support the AFP’s agenda to cut funding for health care and other critical priorities. Show up in the West Foyer of the Capitol at 11:30 am Thursday to make sure the Koch Brothers understand that Colorado isn’t their playground like other states.

Where: West Foyer of the Colorado State Capitol, Denver
When: Thursday, Feb. 9 at 11:30 am.

NARAL Pro Choice Colorado Show of Solidarity – February 9th

Join NARAL and our allies as we wear purple and let our state legislators know that we are watching their votes on reproductive rights! There will be three anti-abortion bills up that day, so it’s vital that we show support for those testifying against these bills. We will be meeting at the Capitol at 1pm for a brief training and then a photo op, before we head to the committee room at 1:30pm. The committee hearing may last several hours, but you are not required to attend the full time.

Where: Colorado State Capitol, Denver
When: Thursday, Feb. 9 at 1 pm.

Colorado Stands With Planned Parenthood

Please join us at Skyline Park on 17th and Arapahoe, right outside of Sen. Cory Gardner’s office, on Saturday February 11th at 1:00pm to show our support for Planned Parenthood and to demand that Sen. Gardner oppose any actions being taken to defund Planned Parenthood.

Where: Skyline Park, 17th and Arapahoe next to the Chase Bank Building (Sen. Gardner’s office)
When: Saturday, Feb. 11 at 1 – 3:00 pm.

And that’s just a partial list of what’s happening in the resistance this week. If you have an event that you want included in our weekly update, send a message to resist@progressnowcolorado.org and let us know about it. We are committed to doing everything we can to help connect citizens and organizations in order to fight back every day and every week.

You are part of what is happening. A long road lies ahead to stop President Trump and fight his backward agenda, but we will prevail. The reason I am confident we will win is each week I see my fellow Coloradans standing up like never before. You are both my personal inspiration and the hope of our nation. When we stand together, nothing can stand against us.
