I just read in the New York Times that Betsy Markey was the only Colorado Democrat to vote against the budget bill last night. Does anyone have any information as to why?

I’m sure if leadership had actually been nervous about this passing they would’ve gotten her in line, but as it is, voting no just enhances the Markey’s moderate/conservative profile and makes re-election more likely. So what’s the downside to her no vote?
If there is an actual “conservadem” in our delegation, it’s her. She made the promise in the campaign to be a fiscal conservative, and that’s exactly what voters are getting.
I have absolutely no problem with Betsy Markey voting the way she did. It doesn’t change anything, and it helps keep the seat blue.

RSB is my homie. There is no such thing as too much snark between us.
Unless he’s making fun of Palin.

that’s just sad. I feel bad for anyone who’s desperate enough to steal money. Seems more like a sign of the times than a commentary about Palin.
Musgrave was so odious, that alone probably gave Betsy 5 – 10 points. Now this time she has the advantage of incumbancy but the disadvantage of running against someone other than Musgrave. Job 1 is get re-elected and by a good enough margin that she does not get serious challangers in the future.
At best she will match John Salazar where she always will face a credible possibility of a challanger, but does well enough that she generally doesn’t get one. But onlt if she kicks ass in ’10.
But with all that said, I’m not sure this vote will matter a lot either way. And if we have a growing economy come ’10 then having voted for the budget would have been a plus.
It’s possible Betsy saw this as a pretty even trade-off and voted her preference.
is that it always helps to be running against the President on the economy. Telling people that the economy is going to hell is equivalent to telling them that they are worth more than they are making, and that their problems are someone else’s fault. Telling people the economy is doing well is equivalent to telling them that if they are struggling, it’s their fault. Ergo, it will always be possible to convince a substantial number of people that the economy is crap.
Still somewhat cynically, there’s no way our economy is going to be sailing in clear waters again by the end of next year. To the average minimally informed citizen, the economy tanking is something that happened around late September of last year… it will be easy to argue that Obama has presided over a failed economy; and if the economy can suddenly tank one September morning, then it should be able to recover as quickly. The argument that Obama did something wrong is going to be easier to win.
I also wonder when I see the phrase “growing economy”… if there’s something we should have learned, I think it’s that our measures for when the economy is growing are, themselves, suspect.
