Obama Hires Senate President Groff

  • by: Colorado Pols

From Politics West–another Obama administration pickup moves out of the rumor column, and it’s a doozy:

Senate President Peter Groff is poised to resign his legislative seat and take a job with President Barack Obama’s administration, according to multiple sources.

Groff, ever the charming and disarming, would only answer questions with questions, and then talk about music or sports…

But two sources have told The Denver Post that Groff will join the Department of Education in a position that involves faith-based and community initiatives.

Groff is considered the leading Democrat voice in the legislature on school reform…

A Democratic vacancy committee will appoint a successor to his east Denver seat.

The Senate Democratic caucus, with a 21-14 majority over Republicans, would elect a new Senate president. Contenders include President Pro Tem Betty Boyd of Lakewood, Majority Leader Brandon Shaffer of Longmont, John Morse of Colorado Springs and Abel Tapia of Pueblo.

          1. Betty has become pretty saavy and sophisticated in her time in the House and the Senate.  She is pretty well respected by all but the most right-wing legislators.

          1. he spoke not to the voters at all?  not even implicitly, by putting his name on the ballot?  If you don’t think you’re committing to anything by putting your name on the ballot, accepting donations, and taking the oath of office, I’m glad you haven’t been elected to public office.

            1. You can’t really expect somebody to not run based on the possibility that someone from their party will get elected President and give them a job in DC. That would contraindicate a lot of people, to the point of being kind of silly.

              1. It’s good and fabulous that he ran for election.  I would merely expect him to actually serve the term to which he was elected and which claimed he wished to serve.

Having said that, I will note (to everyone’s undying curiosity) that I actually find it more acceptable that Groff is leaving office to continue in public service, rather than leaving in a snit to go back to private ambition shortly after being elected.

                1. You can get laid off. You can get fired. The business can go belly up. You can get fed up and quit and look for something else.

Or, a great opportunity crosses your path and you take it.

That doesn’t mean you weren’t committed to your current gig. Something much better came along.

Are you supposed to say, “stuff it”?

Come on. The legislature pays $30,000 a year, plus per diem. The administration job will no doubt pay far more and will be year-round, with bennies.

                  Would you turn it down?

  1.    If so, then the game of musical chairs continues.  Seriously, is Carroll term-limited next year?  If so, this may be a tough call:  give up one more year as speaker in exchange for eight years as a senator.

      1. If anything, he still would like to be Mayor of Denver.

        Marshall might.

As a side note, Marshall and Tate do not like each other and come from two different camps in Northeast Denver.

  2. Pres. O would be lucky to have Sen. Groff…..but I’m beginning to wonder what our legislature is going to be like with all the good ones leaving ????

      1. http://www.mountainvalleynews….

“I think green is an over talked color these days. We have all said that we want to protect the environment, but that we need balance.”

        said Steve King

Orchard City Mayor and Chair of the Delta County Republican Party, Don Suppes

        supplied his own comments

        in an email.

“I’m tired of Governor Ritter putting on a business friendly face and then stabbing

        Colorado businesses in the back…

“…Ritter has placed his social policies and entitlement programs ahead of Colorado’s economy. With every piece of legislation signed by the Governor, we become more and more like California and look what a

mess that place is,” summarized Suppes.

        Sentinel LTE:

President Obama decided to cap income at $250,000 because those people are evil. I did not say anything because I did not make that. But then he did not have enough tax revenue so $150,000 became the new evil. I did not say anything because I did not make that.

Then he discovered that there was still not enough money to cover all the new spending, so they decided that everyone could keep only $25,000 and the government needs the rest. I wondered if I could feed my family on that, but the president told me not to worry, I was now eligible for food stamps.

Then I discovered that there were food shortages because there were no farmers left that were willing to work dusk to dawn for $25,000.

I decided to speak up. But there was no one to answer my call. The politicians had all moved to France – the food is better there.

        1. in reference to a 3% tax increase, which is just exactly like being thrown in a concentration camp.

Think the guy who wrote the letter is Swastika Guy?

          1. Must stop Obama before he returns the affluent to the economic hardships they all suffered during the dark Clinton years. So many BMW driving millionaires in so much trouble just because their strapped circumstances reduced them to hiring cheap illegal help around the house!  Oh the humanity!
