West Slope DA Considers Salazar Challenge

  • by: Colorado Pols

From the Glenwood Springs Post-Independent:

District Attorney Martin Beeson is considering running for Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District seat in 2010, the secretary of the Garfield County Republican Party said this week.

Democrat John Salazar currently holds the office. He easily won re-election in November 2008 over Republican challenger Wayne Wolf.

Beeson, a Republican, directed some words at Salazar from atop a picnic table at a tax day tea party in front of the Garfield County Courthouse in Glenwood Springs Wednesday. He was speaking to a crowd protesting increased government spending and criticizing the new presidential administration and top Democrats.

“Mr. Salazar, keep your hands out of my pocket,” Beeson said, directing the same message to President Barack Obama, U.S. Sen. Harry Reid and Speaker of the House Nanci Pelosi.

Beeson could not be immediately reached for comment Thursday, but said in a phone message that he expects to make an announcement in the near future.

As to Beeson’s speech being the centerpiece of the tax day tea party, county Republican Party secretary Marilyn Oden said Beeson is considering running for the congressional seat…

We don’t know much about Beeson, except that he replaced the prior 9th District DA in a recall election for which he was also the main organizer (that’s a nice deal if you can get it)–and had a prime stump opportunity at the recent “Tea Party” in Glenwood. It’s going to take considerably more than that to unseat the popular and moderate John Salazar, starting with convincing NRCC types that he’s somebody whose name they ought to know. ‘Cause they don’t know it now.

      1. His mustache is so weak compared to the very impressive mustaches of Wes McKinley (cowboy) or Randy Baumgardner (biker)

I afraid Steve’s is just a little bit Village People.

        1. You are evil, Doppleganger!

Now I can’t get rid of the image of King in a hard hat and some cut-off jeans …

(Mmmm … must think about doughnuts …)

      2. He wants to be sheriff. The incumbent is term-limited and the job pays a helluva lot better. It’s also scary. Stevie can’t do much damage in the House, where he’s in the distinct minority. But as sheriff?

          1. Wagner is not only a wingnut, he’s dumb and arrogant, and his weekly column in the paper gives him a chance to prove it regularly.

Rank-and-file law enforcement officers despise Wagner. They can tolerate Hollywood.

            1. people asking about under what circumstances, exactly, Wagner left his position in the Sheriff’s Department.

And whether the answer gets out to the people.

As far as his wingnut column goes, that’s a big plus in Mesa County.

              1. Many of them are not. You can’t win any Mesa County election without the support of moderate Republicans, and Wagner won’t get it. They’d rather hold their noses and vote for Stevie.

Back to Beeson: it’s always fun to see somebody who’s spent a great deal of his life on the government payroll railing against taxes.

It’s tragic so many people buy into it.

                  1. They’ll win the primaries. When the Dems occasionally get their act together and produce a good candidate, they can win the general.

Problem is, Dems are so thin in Mesa County it’s tough to find solid candidates.

  1. The GOP needs to have credible challangers in every race – that is a key part of our being a Democracy. So kudos to all the sacraficial lambs out there – regardless of outcome what you do is key for our system.

  2. Beeson was the main speaker at the Tea Party in Glenwood on Wed. He complained about taxes, yadda yadda — yet, as the District Attorney, his position, the judicial system, etc, would be nearly non-existant without taxpayer support. Yep, this guy is off to a good start.
