Senate Officially Goes "Nuclear" to Push Gorsuch Confirmation

Senate rules.

UPDATE: Republicans officially go nuclear:

Senators voted on Thursday to advance Judge Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, setting up a final confirmation vote on Friday.

By a vote of to 55 to 45, all Republicans and three Democrats voted to proceed to final debate on the nomination of Gorsuch, 49, a Denver-based judge on the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals. If confirmed, Gorsuch would replace the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who died unexpectedly last year, sparking a more than year-long feud among senators about the future makeup of the high court.

Senator Michael Bennet (D-Denver) was one of four Democrats voting to end a filibuster, though Bennet did vote “NO” on the nuclear option. Senator Cory Gardner (R-Yuma) voted in support of the nuclear option.

From the Washington Post:

Democrats successfully blocked Judge Neil Gorsuch’s confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court from advancing in the U.S. Senate on Thursday, sparking what is expected to be a bitter clash with Republicans over how the chamber confirms high court nominees.

Gorsuch failed to earn the 60 votes needed to end debate on his nomination. In response, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has vowed he will change Senate rules in order to confirm Gorsuch and all future Supreme Court nominees with a simple majority vote.

A final confirmation vote on Gorsuch is not scheduled until Friday, when 52 Republicans and at least three Democrats — from states won by Trump in last year’s election — are expected to vote to have him replace the late Antonin Scalia on the high court.

But the next 24 hours could be among the most bitter in recent Senate history.

“This will be the first and last partisan filibuster of a Supreme Court nomination,” McConnell (R-Ky.) vowed Thursday morning.

    1. We'll look for you right-wing bitches and stooges to be whining and howling to the moon when later, we appoint Elizabeth Warren — or more likely, a liberal far, far younger, and several of them — to the Supreme Court.

And you bitches won't be able to do a thing to stop us!

It's coming, mongrels. Be ready to suffer impotently when it does. Only a matter of time…

So enjoy your Pyrrhic victory today, but remember: He who has now lived by he sword will most definitely end up dying by it.

  1. Republicans rip another public institution to shreds.  So much for the rights of the minority.  Payback is going to be a bitch when Trump’s run is over.

        1. You think the old fat guy (Trump) will live that long? And you're assuming that the Dems nominate somebody in 2020 who is a far lefty, triggering another McGovern-style wipeout?

          1. And you're assuming that the Dems nominate somebody in 2020 who is a far lefty, triggering another McGovern-style wipeout?

Well, for Zappatero, hope springs eternal.

                  1. No worries.  I am confident that  your fealty and subservience have been noted and will be passed along to the appropriate Trump Loyalty Monitor and Enforcer's office.

        1. No no no I think left-wing whack jobs get a vote too. I just think their vote does not count or something like that… not sure how it works but pretty sure Harry Reid does…

          1. Interesting how the same people who support a minority construct, the Electoral College, to prop up the stinking carcass in the White House howl about a minority construct in the Senate for protecting the minority.  Even though a majority of Americans see the Electoral College as something that should be abolished.

Just like the Jesus v. Ayn Rand conversation Republicans, pick a side.  I frankly don't care which one…just be consistent.

      1. Reid should have done it as soon as it was apparent that Republicans were blocking ALL of Obama's nominations.  It wasn't selective rejection of unfit nominees.  It was a systematic abuse of the filibuster system.  Republicans can blame it all on Reid like they blame all of Trump's disasters on Obama but the reality of the situation is that Republicans destroyed the purpose and intent of the filibuster when they decided to oppose everything Obama was legitimately entitled to do.

          1. Your alternative facts won't wash this time Negev.

82 Obama judicial nominees were filibustered.  There were 86 filibustered for all the other presidents combined.

You lie as easily as Trump.  No wonder you are a Republican, the party of immoral values.

            1. Hmm…so you think Reid should have done it earlier, when it was apparent that republicans were blocking ALL of Obama's nominations, but when democrats block all of Trump's nominations he is destroying the "purpose and intent of the filibuster", by doing it earlier. Unbelievably in this discussion that makes sense.

You can be angry, spiteful, or vindictive all you want, but if you are surprised this went the way it did, thank your party.

I am a registered independent. Not a republican. Trump was my first ever vote for a republican president. Probly not the last y'all are cray cray and not keeping it together….you are in a prime position to consolidate and you're blowing it with stupid tricks republicans already failed at. You better come up with a pretty charismatic jackass quick for the next run or cheeto gonna bitch slap you once again. That'll hurt.

              1. You are an asshole Negev who lies to disguise the evil intentions of your overlords.  Reid patiently waited for Republicans to behave like adults and with a respect for the public institutions that they run as public servants.  82 filibusters later he finally realized that Republicans had no intentions of being partners in Democracy.  The only thing they care about, like you, is power and they are as piss poor at governing as you are of telling the truth.  There was no eloquence in what they did.  The terms of 43 presidents over two hundred years of Congress yielded 86 filibusters of judicial nominees of the president.  You are the one who is insulting trying to say that there wasn't a direct effort by Republicans to filibuster everyone of Obama's nominees for purely political purposes.  Enjoy the treachery of Republicans you lying piece of shit.  Like them you have no honor or interest in governing this country as a united people.  Go fuck yourself and your little alternate reality that all those filibusters of Obama nominees was Ried's fault and not calculated deceit by Republicans.

                1. Temper temper, GG. We just went over this whole gaslighting thing a minute ago. I nowhere denied, or lied, about any republican intentions or their 82 filibusters. I don't deny, in fact agree that the only thing they care about is power. I made no effort to try to say the republicans were playing fair.

Whats astonishing to me is that the democrats do the same thing and pull this filibuster stunt, which totally pissed them off when it happened to them, and somehow expect the republicans to play fair now that they are in power, and NOT use the nuclear option when they had it handed to them on a silver platter?!

So you're bent out of shape because the weapon you created was used against you. That's precious.

I'd tell you to go fuck yourself too but you have already fucked yourself. Take a bite of the shit sandwich you made and buckle up, cus my guess is you ain't seen nuthin yet.

  2. Thank you Colorado Pols!

Your ability to whip your KOOK base into a frenzy powerful enough to shit their collective pants and  panties is a feat to be remembered.

    1. And your ability to deflect from discussing the double standard of Republicans in destroying our public institutions is normal for a little prick like you.

      1. Not sure if you are off your meds or something but I just embraced and agreed with you that the republicans have exercised a double standard. The same double standard that you explicitly admitted Harry Reid should  have utilized earlier when he had a chance.

Do you think if Garland got the chance the dems would not invoke the  "nuclear option" as well? C'mon, this is politics. You played your hand, they played thiers. Every move, and every outcome would be the same for both parties based on the hands they were dealt. Taking the moral high ground because you were unable to capitalize on "destroying our public institutions" is the definition of double standard.

There is a difference between deflection and reflection. If you put some thought into this you will find there was no other viable option to each parties best interest. (Insert gratuitous ad hominem attack here)

  3. Say hello to Justice Gorsuch.

Which Polster is going to primary Bennet in 5 years?

Zap? MJ? Maybe one of CD-6 failures will give it another go?

Why would a Dem senator in a purple state go all out left wing whack job, particularly when the nominee is from Colorado?

It is not in their interest to do so.  They want to get re-elected.

If you need a tour guide, just follow what should they do to get reelected.  It usually shows the way.

      1. You presume too much. First, Roberts is not a lock-step conservative as you tell yourself. Recall his two votes on the challenges to the Affordable Care Act. Second, as much as Clarence Thomas is a reliable vote for the right wing, there's no indication he's going to determine when he retires based on what Trump tells him to do. Third, if Ginsberg or Kennedy's seat were to open and Roe v. Wade appeared to be at risk, the handful of mildly pro-choice Republican senators (Collins, Murkowski) would let Trump know that he risked defeat if he picked a anti-choice hard right winger.

          1. His point was well made.  Prunie likes to stoke the fire, but there is occasionally reason in him.  They will revoke his troll license if he keeps this up.
