Get More Smarter on Monday (April 17)

You know there is still a rogue Easter Egg in your backyard somewhere. It’s time to Get More Smarter! If you think we missed something important, please include the link in the comments below (here’s a good example). If you are more of a visual learner, check out The Get More Smarter Show.

TOP OF MIND TODAY…

► We’re halfway through the month of April, and there is still no end in sight to the large-scale protests of Congressional Republicans and the Trump administration. Denver7 has more on a big Denver rally on Saturday:

Thousands took to the streets in Denver demanding to see President Donald Trump’s tax returns.

Protesters gathered at Civic Center Park and rallied together Saturday afternoon to ask for transparency and honesty from the president when it comes to his financial dealings.

The Tax March in Denver, one of more than 150 held across the nation, was also held in the hopes of creating pressure for Congress to enact legislation forcing elected officials to release their tax returns.

More rallies are planned for this weekend with a focus on addressing Climate Change.

► One of the biggest political stories in the country this week is taking place in Georgia, where the outcome of a special race to replace Republican Rep. Tom Price (now President Trump’s Secretary of Health and Human Services) could foretell big changes in the 2018 election. Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff may be able to get better than 50% of the vote in Tuesday’s election and avoid a runoff election with one of 11 Republican candidates. As CNN explains:

That’s what makes this race so fascinating: It shouldn’t be competitive. When Rep. Tom Price was tapped as Donald Trump’s health secretary, Georgia politicos were readying for what was likely to be an all-Republican fight featuring a few token Democrats. But Ossoff has jolted the 18-candidate field and unified most of the district’s Democrats and Trump skeptics.

Republicans are concerned enough about this race that President Trump took to bashing Ossoff on Twitter this morning.

► The White House is taking criticism from a late Friday announcement that visitor logs would no longer be made public. As the Washington Post writes:

Donald Trump appears to have made a cynical calculation that he will not pay a high political price for being the most secretive president since Richard Nixon.

All the leaks about infighting among senior staff and the president’s proclivity for tweeting have created a false sense that the public knows what is happening inside his White House. In fact, the administration has gone to great lengths to conceal pertinent information from the American people.

After dodging questions on the subject for weeks, the administration waited until the afternoon of Good Friday to dump the news that it will not follow former president Barack Obama’s policy of voluntarily disclosing the names of most visitors to the White House complex. The president’s communications director cited “grave national security risks” as a justification, even though Obama had made an exception for national security.

IN CASE YOU ARE STANDING NEAR A WATER COOLER…

► Another study shows that Trumpcare would be absolutely devastating for Colorado residents if it were ever enacted.

► Remember when Colorado Senate Republicans opened the 2017 legislative session saying that repealing Colorado’s Health Exchange would be a major priority? Senate Bill 13-003 was introduced on January 11 but is still idling in the GOP-controlled Senate; the bill was scheduled to be heard on the Senate floor today but was quietly “re-allocated” for a future date.

► If you want to hear Sen. Cory Gardner’s voice in Colorado, your only real option is to listen to right-wing radio shows.

► President Trump’s proposed federal budget includes a significant cutback that would harm students across Colorado. From the Denver Post:

The 21st Century College Readiness Center is just one of 102 after-school and summer programs in Colorado funded by the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant Program. The federal grant is the only one dedicated to supporting after-school programs and could be eliminated under President Donald Trump’s budget proposal.

Coordinators of after-school programs who work with some of 130,000 K-12 students in Colorado involved in after-school activities are anxiously awaiting the final decision for the 2018 budget.

“It is devastating to think about it not only for Scholars Unlimited but for all the other programs in our state that are serving at-risk children and youth,” said Coleen Truax, development director of Scholars Unlimited, an after-school and summer program in Denver, and a recipient of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant.

► Congressman Ken Buck (R-Greeley) showed up at a Longmont town hall meeting organized by volunteers to be held “with or without him.”

► Congressman Mike Coffman (R-Aurora) says that he wants to hold another town hall meeting at some point in 2017.

► New poll results suggest that House Speaker Paul Ryan is one of the least-popular Speakers in many, many years.

► An annual study on the general election cycle in America shows that 2016 voters were largely motivated by racist attitudes and beliefs.

► A real estate research company predicts that housing prices in the Denver area won’t start a measurable decline until 2019.

► The Denver Post takes a look at Republican chances of winning the Congressional seat in CD-7, which will open up because Democrat Ed Perlmutter is running for Governor. Somehow, Ryan Frazier’s name is being floated as a potential 2018 candidate, which should tell you all you need to know about how pessimistic Republicans are about winning this seat.

OTHER LINKS YOU SHOULD CLICK

► What’s that you say? You want to know more about legislation surrounding taxing authority related to recreational marijuana in Colorado. Well, here you go.

► Vice President Mike Pence spent the weekend making mean faces at North Korea.

ICYMI

► Even Republicans like Rep. Mike Coffman are speaking out against the practice of labeling concerned constituents as “paid protestors.”

  1. Scott Tipton Town Halls in Alamosa tomorrow and in Pueblo on Thursday.

According to CNN, Tipton has a town hall in Alamosa on Tuesday, and in Pueblo West on Thursday next week. These are sponsored by the VFW.

Tue Apr 18 2017 6:00 PM, MDT Alamosa Town Hall Meeting Alamosa City Hall 300 Hunt Ave, Alamosa, CO 81101

Thu Apr 20 2017 5:30 PM, MDT Pueblo West town Hall Meeting  at Pueblo West HS, 661 W Capistrano Ave, Pueblo West, CO 81007

The one in Pueblo should be lively.

So this makes Cory Gardner  and Ed Perlmutter the only members of the Congressional delegation not to do  in-person town halls.  Perlmutter has scheduled other constituent meetings, and both he and Gardner have had well- attended telephone town halls, but neither has met with large groups of constituents.
