Get More Smarter on Wednesday (May 24)

  • by: Colorado Pols

By the time you finish reading this post, George Brauchler will have come up with another position on dealing with Colorado’s budget problems. It’s time to Get More Smarter! If you think we missed something important, please include the link in the comments below (here’s a good example). If you are more of a visual learner, check out The Get More Smarter Show.

TOP OF MIND TODAY…

► The Congressional Budget Office is expected today to release its score of the latest House Republican version of Trumpcare. As the Washington Post explains, Senate Republicans are about to take the baton of stupid:

The Senate can begin health-care discussions in earnest today when it finally gets an official word from the Congressional Budget Office on how much money there is to work with on an overhaul of President Obama’s health-care law.

Remember that crazy roller-coaster ride a few weeks ago, as the House started and stopped…and stopped and started…and finally gained enough speed to pass its health-care measure (and, I might add, gave reporters the legislative equivalent of motion sickness)? Ever since then, senators have been waiting in line for their own wild ride to start.

But now the cars can start chugging down the tracks, when the CBO releases its anxiously anticipated and final estimate of how much the House’s American Health Care Act would cost and how many people it would cover…

…the Senate needs a CBO score for very practical reasons. Anything it wants to do regarding replacing the ACA hangs on this score. That’s because if Senate Republicans want to pass a health-care bill without any help from Democrats, they must use the budget bill currently housing the House health-care measure. Using the budget measure allows them to pass it with just a simple majority instead of the typical 60-vote threshold.

Here in Colorado, the health care spotlight now turns to Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Yuma), who is among the Senate leaders tapped to come up with some sort of health care legislation of its own.

“Waffler Brauchler?” Arapahoe County District Attorney George Brauchler is running for governor, and he’s already flip-flopping in a manner that would make “Both Ways” Bob Beauprez beam with pride. Within the span of 24 hours, Brauchler told the Colorado Independent that he both supported and opposed efforts by the Colorado legislature to re-classify the Hospital Provider Fee.

► Senator Michael Bennet (D-Denver) is pushing legislation that seeks to end the “revolving door” of politicians becoming lobbyists on Capitol Hill. From the Colorado Statesman:

“This bill puts power back into the hands of the Coloradans I came here to represent,” Bennet said. “By banning members of Congress from lobbying when they leave Capitol Hill, we can begin to restore confidence in our national politics.”

Along with a lifetime ban, the legislation would increase congressional staff restrictions on lobbying from one year to six years, implement a 6-year ban on lobbyists from joining congressional or committee staff that they previously lobbied and create a more accessible website for public reporting of lobbying efforts.

Results of a new poll, meanwhile, show that Americans are not enthusiastic about President Trump’s prospects for “draining the swamp” in Washington D.C.

IN CASE YOU ARE STANDING NEAR A WATER COOLER…

► Television and radio ads are running across Colorado for the next two weeks encouraging Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Yuma) to oppose any efforts to craft a version of Trumpcare in the Senate.

Meanwhile, AARP is sponsoring a new wave of advertisements pointing out that the House Republicans’ health care legislation would INCREASE costs for elderly Americans.

► Republicans are growing increasingly concerned about Thursday’s special Congressional election in Montana. From Politico:

Republican Greg Gianforte’s closing motivational speech to voters ahead of Thursday’s special House election in Montana is the same thing GOP strategists are whispering in private: “This race is closer than it should be.”

It’s a recurring nightmare of a pattern for Republicans around the country, as traditional GOP strongholds prove more difficult and expensive for the party to hold than it ever anticipated when President Donald Trump plucked House members like Ryan Zinke, the former Montana Republican now running the Interior Department, for his Cabinet. Gianforte is still favored to keep the seat red, but a state Trump carried by 20 percentage points last year became a battleground in the past few months.

Democrat Rob Quist, a folk singer and first-time candidate, has raised more than $6 million for his campaign, including $1 million in the past week alone as energized Democratic donors pour online cash into political causes this year. Quist hopes that enthusiasm also contributes to an outsize turnout — as it did in special elections in Kansas and Georgia earlier this year — for the oddly scheduled Thursday election, happening just before a holiday weekend.

► Arapahoe County District Attorney George Brauchler is seeking the Republican nomination for Governor in 2018. His campaign might want to think about fixing his SEO problems on the Internet tubes.

► Democrats now have three candidates seeking the party nomination for Attorney General in 2018. Jefferson County Deputy D.A. Michael Dougherty announced his campaign late Monday.

President Trump is still abroad on his “big foreign trip,” but that didn’t stop the White House from releasing a ridiculous new budget proposal. Trump’s budget isn’t just morally bankrupt — it doesn’t make any mathematical sense whatsoever.

Congressional Republicans probably couldn’t agree on a compromise budget even if Trump’s proposal made any sort of logical sense.

► Two Colorado Republicans — Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Yuma) and Rep. Scott Tipton (R-Cortez) — are urging President Trump to refrain from making changes to the National Monument designation of the Canyon of the Ancients in Southwestern Colorado.

► President Trump’s praise of Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte is coming back to haunt him. From the Washington Post:

The Post’s David Nakamura and Barton Gellman yesterday obtained a transcript of his April 29th phone call with the president of the Philippines.

“I just wanted to congratulate you because I am hearing of the unbelievable job (you’re doing) on the drug problem,” Trump told Duterte at the start of their conversation, according to the document. “Many countries have the problem, we have a problem, but what a great job you are doing and I just wanted to call and tell you that.”…

The context of Trump’s comments matters: Duterte is an authoritarian thug. He has overseen a brutal extrajudicial campaign that has resulted in the killings of thousands of suspected drug dealers. His abuses are well documented, including in reports by the U.S. State Department and Human Rights Watch.

President Trump met with Pope Francis on Wednesday in Vatican City. Trump now seems to like the Pope.

► Commerce City Senator Dominick Moreno will announce today that he will seek the Democratic nomination in CD-7. Incumbent Congressman Ed Perlmutter is vacating the seat in order to run for Governor in 2018.

► Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn should expect to receive a couple of new subpoenas, courtesy of the Senate investigation into Russian ties to the Trump administration.

► House Speaker Paul Ryan does not agree with President Trump that former FBI Director James Comey is a “nut job.”

ICYMI

Enough of the conspiracy theories about the murder of former Democratic staffer Seth Rich. Yes, that means you, Sean Hannity.

    1. Nothing is keeping you from doing just that. Unless you don't want a focus on US intelligence leaking info that UK intelligence didn't want out. Like I said on the other thread, it's been just 4 months now since your boy Trump took office and already he's running the leakiest administration in US history.

    2. They're in denial about Islamic terror. It's easy to ignore blown up little girls when you care more about tolerance than protecting the West from barbarism.

          1. I remember how it once was back in 2015, sonny . . .

. . . the country was alive with promise, we had a President who spoke in complete and intelligible  sentences (and often even paragraphs — instead of 140 characters. Sad!), Vladimir Putin controlled the government in just one former world superpower, and everybody, everybody (including Moderatus) was only barely able to imagine an America run by some billionaire (for real) oligarch bent on fucking absolutely everything up  . . .

            . . .  Yes, sonny, — complete sentences!
