No More Security Lectures From Shawn Mitchell

  • by: Colorado Pols

As the Denver Post reports:

A state senator’s after-hours security code for the Capitol has been deactivated after he made it available to a class he was teaching.

Sen. Shawn Mitchell, R-Broomfield, said he had no idea he was breaching security when he provided his individual code to the 11 graduate students in his Colorado government and politics class at the University of Colorado Denver.

Mitchell might own the distinction of being the only lawmaker to ever be “deactivated.”

“It’s never happened to a lawmaker in anyone’s memory, but it has happened to other statehouse employees,” said Lance Clem, spokesman for the Department of Public Safety.

The code – a series of numbers – allows lawmakers, staffers and others to get into the state Capitol after hours.

On Monday, Mitchell said he taught his class at the Capitol on May 6, the night after the session ended. He gave his students the code.

“These are students I know and trust,” he said.

It really is a problem for Capitol security to have had this access code distributed, and everybody we know who has had one absolutely remembers being told not to distribute it. But fortunately, it’s not a big deal to change it, maybe after sweeping the building to make sure Shawn Mitchell’s right-wing indoctrinated students didn’t plant any “2nd Amendment caches” in key locations.

Relax, we’re mostly kidding.

  1. dumb ass.

If every member of the legislature followed Mitchell’s lead and gave their security code to 11 people they “know and trust”, there would be, at least, 1100 more people running around with security codes.

Proof once again that we cannot trust Republicans in government to keep us (or themselves) safe.

  2. the right wing trolls on this site, and all the sleazy Republican blogs would be tearing him/her a new one.

Not to say that Mitchell is immune to criticism for this obviously, but it’s fairly lighthearted. You just know that if this was a Democrat, then Josh Penry would be calling for their censure or something.

  3. There are quite a few posters here who spend enough time at the capitol to testify to the fact that security rules are hammered into your brain down there. If a legislator can’t recite the rules about their security codes, then it’s only because they don’t have a pulse. NOT because they don’t remember.
