We speculated the day before yesterday that if Tom Tancredo’s recent comments on hypothetical responses to a nuclear terrorist attack on the United States gained traction in the national media, the result might be costly for him.
Today, articles featuring angry condemnation of Tancredo from the State Department as well as Muslim nations around the world were printed in the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, USA Today, and numerous other dailies via AP, in addition to prominent coverage in the News and Post.
It’s safe to say that what he said got noticed. The only question that remains is what damage this will do to Tancredo’s future electability. We have heard the word ‘censure’ used more than once in the last 24 hours.
Whatever might come of that, and despite the blood that “Tancredo haters” can plainly smell in the water now, we feel obligated to point out again the ardent, likely unflappable support of Tancredo’s core constituency. This “nuke ’em ’till they glow” rhetoric might actually play well with them. The voters of CD-6 have endured scorn over Tancredo’s vitriol many times before, and then happily re-elected him.

As a rational Republican in the 6th CD, I can say the voters and local elected officials have looked the other way regarding our “special” Congressman and have been lucky that we had Congressman Beauprez as our surrogate Congressman to actually represent our district in DC. Tancredo is ineffective at every level in delivering anything close to representation for our district and the voters are slowly coming to this conclusion. One need only look to the margin the President and Pete Coors recieved in the district vs. Tancredo. He has decreased in percent every election maybe this will be his last. Tom exists to serve Tom plain and simple.
Im with Colorado Pols on this one. Tom has a captive and very generous fan club right now. I’m willing to speculate that hundreds of people opened up their checkbooks as soon as they saw what TT had to say this morning.
I’m not certain that’s what the author intended, but whatever floats your boat.
A Democrat probably isn’t going to beat him, but will he Tom Tom get a primary opponent?
6CD brings up a good point. But with Beauprez out of congress (and no longer our rational republican in DC) – we’ll have the likes of MM and TT representing Colorado. Not a great fit for republicans in the state. And if Hefley retires, too, then we’ll have DL, MM and TT. Again, not exactly the mainstream philosophy I expect for Colorado.
6th CD GOP what are you talking about? Coors lost both Jefferson and Arapahoe Counties. Tancredo won both counties overwhelmingly. Real Republicans in the 6th CD are proud to refer to Tom as Congressman and Pete as Mr. Coors.
I am certainly not in agreeance w/ TT’s latest remarks. Just pointing out, like Colorado Pols did, that his support and the people who donate to him are not likely to be taken back by what he said. Even if Tancredo does get a primary opponent, there is no way they are going to raise the funds to beat him.
I’ve heard Mike Beasey (who was planning on a primary against Harvey for state senate) is actually considering a run against TomTom.
Didn’t he also run against Tom in that first primary where Tom petitioned onto the ballot?
Note to the real 6th GOP – Arapahoe and Jefferson counties are split between more than one congressional district – BB’s district.
In Douglas, I’m pretty sure the Coors/TT ratio is about equal.
Tom would have to be utterly toxic on the level of Traficant to kick him out.
Agree or disagree, why don’t you call his office and tell him what you think.
720.283.9772
2004 Douglas County Numbers
Coors 60.74%
Salazar 37.84%
Tancredo 64.80%
Conti 33.99
I don’t consider a 4.06 percent spread to be “about equal”.
Again, keep up the good work Congressman.
Rebel Rep – I think you mean Mark Baisley, who ran in the primary for the 7th, rather than Mike Beasley, who used to lobby for the Governor and now runs the Department of Local Affairs.
I don’t think either is planning to run against Tancredo. Last I heard Baisley is running for state senate and Beasley is busy picking on Dan Grossman.
Extreme Tancredo goes worldwide
Makes you wonder how many more of these he can weather, doesn’t it? In Ankara, Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul blasted Tancredo’s comments suggesting the United States could “take out” holy sites, including Mecca, if Islamic terrorists detonated …
The president’s Department of State does not think much of Rep. Tancredo:
U.S. State Department spokesman Adam Ereli called the statements Tancredo made Friday “insulting and offensive.” He said Americans “respect the dignity and sanctity of other religions.”
Tancredo knows nothing about military strategy, especially since he was able to avoid serving in Viet Nam (he could have gone, but obtained deferments). And he is the same guy who absolutely. positively pledged that he would serve only three (four?) terms in Congress and flailed his Democratic opponent who refused to take the same “pledge” and then when it was time to abide by his pledge he changed his mind. Tancredo’s remarks were stupid and ignorant. They will be used by militant Muslims to recruit yet more fanatics and people will die because of this.
So a major Arapahoe County-based company that profits hugely from illegal immigration, reportedly is trying to get a Republican to oust Tom Tancredo and probably has people on this board bashing him. No one can beat Tancredo, not even a veteran of the war in Iraq or corporations profiting from illegal immigration.
But thinking voters know that Tancredo did not recommend bombing anybody. He said it would be an option. It’s just in the interest of advocates of illegal immigration and other leftish positions to demonize Tancredo at each opportunity, even if they have to distort his words, as they have been all week.
Meanwhile, Tancredo has let the world know that Americans won’t tolerate terrorist attacks and could make the perpertrators and their backers pay.
The real outrageous politician is London’s mayor, who blames the policies of the U.S. and Britain for 9/11 and 7/7.
Why hasn’t the Denver Post editorialized about him in their page one headlines?
Vietnam Robert? What has that got to do anything? And PC blather from the State Dept is pretty much the norm. TT will be re-elected as long as he cares to run. I’m proud that TT is my Congressman. And despite the occasional gaffe, I think he does a good job of representing my interets in Congress.
