“I thought he was going to bring Bonzo along. Doesn’t he own a chimp called ‘Bonzo’?”
“No, Ronnie, Pop isn’t a country. Michael is the king of pop music.”
Nancy, why is he asking me about our boys?
RIP King
He showed up on the Simpsons, playing a chubby white mental patient who thinks he’s Michael Jackson.
He was the only guy my dad said I go on a date with at that time. Him or Donny Osmond.
LOL…I am really sad right now. Michael’s Off The Wall Album was a staple when I was at CU!!!
I am very sad right now.
the Jackson 5 were the shit. Amazing to think of what a dynamic performer he was at such an early age.
I’m not crying, but I haven’t gotten any joy over the news, myself. He’s a tragic figure, in many regards.
I don’t know how many people here are from Detroit and were teens in the 60’s there, but I was one. The Motown Review, live at the Fox Theater, was the greatest show ever.
The Jackson 5 was a great group then.
I had a GIANT poster of him in my bedroom. A couple of years ago, my mom found my old “Ben” album from 1972.
I didn’t follow MJ beyond the Jackson 5.
Ooooh, baby, give me one more chance to show you what love is …
is there anyone, besides Barack Obama maybe, whose death would be a bigger event or garner more press coverage than Michael Jackson? If so, who?
I was thinking Paul McCartney for a while, but he couldn’t be bigger than the King of Pop, so now I’m stumped.
But for different reasons.
C’mon. Michael Jackson is the front headline on everything from the New York Times to Le Monde to Beijing Daily, and I’ll bet he’ll be there for a while.
I don’t think Thomas or Scalia for whatever reason would be front page of the Beijing Daily is all I’m saying.
Insha Allah!
I did not know he was a big celebrity to garner such coverage. No Ed Show, no KO show, no Rachel Maddow show.
I thought Farrah Fawcett was a more important celebrity and could not understand why the death of Jackson would overwhelm her death.
I suppose it is a generational difference.
Never much a fan of Jackson, but of course being a male I always thought Farrah was hot. But Jackson was definitely the bigger attraction.
Fawcett’s death was pretty much anticipated. Jackson’s was not.
The Onion had a classic story about the commemorative plate industry calling for her death soon after Princess Di had passed.
Though her actual fans are getting a bit long in the tooth, so maybe not anymore.
a definite possibility.
Oprah
or
Bill Gates?
but we already had the three:
Ed McMahon
Farah Fawcett
Michael Jackson
So Oprah and Bill don’t need to worry.
though I’m not sure she has the worldwide cachet someone like Jacko did …
For that matter, when Bill Clinton kicks it, the world goes wild.
But consider, when news emerges that Dick Cheney has died, how many will think it’s a ruse and that he’s faked his death?
He will fake his death, mark my words.
If there ever was a candidate for a psycho wired up living bio-robo evil mastermind that fakes his death so that he can live forever to torment the human race in a shadowy dark world – Dick Cheney is it.
Is the only person I can think of who bridges across so many cultures.
I wonder if Mick Jagger or Bob Dylan get almost as much attention as Michael Jackson when they die. There’s no way the ’60s generation can tell themselves they’re still young once that happens.
n/t
Love him or hate him, you can’t deny the man had talent. The most talent of a generation.
He brought enjoyment to BILLIONS of people, and there aren’t any other people about whom that can be said.
He transformed music and dance, and captivated the world.
A few years ago I was in Brazil and went to a Favela (slum area) to learn about the socio-economic conditions, and all anyone could talk about there was how Michael Jackson had been there a decade before. Residents all pointed out where they were when he was there, and told stories of having seen him. In that musical, he actually highlighted poverty issues and showed the favelas to the world.
Rest in Peace, Michael.
Congressman Jared Polis
I remember visiting Romania in the early ’90s, shortly after the stranglehold of communism had seemingly been lifted. A friend was renting an apartment from a Romanian family, who were abroad. Dumbstruck, I encountered a poster of Michael Jackson on the wall of the teenage boy’s room.
then she got abnormally skinny too, and had a heart attack.
Michael was everywhere due to the advent of video.
But I loved Thriller. Remember the Billie Jean video?
was on Michael Jackson and in it he pointed out how the knife fight in the Beat It video is totally unfair. You have two guys with their wrists tied together facing each other, which means that unless one of them is a southpaw, that fight is rigged.
Still, great legacy though.
I wonder how Michael Jackson’s death will affect the GOP primary in the governor’s race.
I wonder how it will affect the likelihood Ritter is challenged in a primary.
I’m originally from Detroit but since I’m 35 years old, I missed the late late 60’s / early 70’s Motown heyday. My parents however had an awesome 45 collection including the Jackson 5’s ABC which I wore out as a kid.
The world will never see a talent like MJ again for sure. It is sad though that he became such a cartoon caricature of himself the last 20 years and had such terrible allegations of inappropriate conduct with children.
May MJ moonwalk off into the afterlife of wherever he’s heading to…
.
Ol’ Blue Eyes was the first Superstar.
Elvis might have been bigger in his heyday. The Beatles, too.
Other than that, nobody in modern times has ever held the attention of more people for more time.
I like to think that he really wasn’t a child molester, he just felt more secure around kids, because every single adult in his life, starting with his Dad, was out to use and exploit him.
One thing you can’t deny: he was full of love for other people.
.
I remember watching, as a child, a Jackson 5 cartoon show on TV:
John Lennon, Elvis and Michael. The world has never seen bigger icons. My British cousins cannot get enough of Michael.
At 45 yoa I can’t remember a time that Micheal Jackson wasn’t being played on the radio in one form or another. It’s hard to think that MTV would have had anywhere near the impact it did without his video performances. Fred Astaire admired his dancing ability. His personal life was tragic in many ways, but he still affected billions with his music and charitable work (We Are The World immediately comes to mind.) The biggest performing star of my lifetime, he leaves a big hole in entertainment.
On an entirely unrelated note, Weird Al Yankovic announced his retirement.
.
maybe there will be a movie made out of clips from the rehearsals.
.
he just released half a dozen tracks
based on Weird Al’s early work doing parodies of Jackson’s songs.
