UPDATE: As The Atlantic reports, Bannon ain’t happy:

Steve Bannon, one scary looking dude.

That’s the word from the New York Times, controversial White House chief strategist Steve Bannon is being shown the door as the Trump presidency’s struggle to find footing in the grip of self-inflicted chaos and disaster goes on:

President Trump has told senior aides that he has decided to remove Stephen K. Bannon, the embattled White House chief strategist who helped Mr. Trump win the 2016 election, according to two administration officials briefed on the discussion.

The president and senior White House officials were debating when and how to dismiss Mr. Bannon. The two administration officials cautioned that Mr. Trump is known to be averse to confrontation within his inner circle, and could decide to keep on Mr. Bannon for some time.

As of Friday morning, the two men were still discussing Mr. Bannon’s future, the officials said. A person close to Mr. Bannon insisted the parting of ways was his idea, and that he had submitted his resignation to the president on Aug. 7, to be announced at the start of this week, but it was delayed in the wake of the racial unrest in Charlottesville, Va.

Mr. Bannon had clashed for months with other senior West Wing advisers and members of the president’s family.

Bannon, who never looked comfortable in the Donald Trump White House’s strict Manhattan dress code, was both the focal point of controversy and the ideological pole star that drew in the specific segments of voters considered integral to Trump’s narrow election. It was Bannon’s unapologetic nationalism as voiced by Trump that appealed to Rust Belt voters disaffected by NAFTA, which proved key to Trump’s Electoral College majority. And Bannon’s platform also played a role in motivating the racist fringe to support Trump–a disturbingly symbiotic relationship as became clearer in the past week.

It’s safe to say that history will not miss this creep.

  1. Hell hath no fury, like a Bannon fired…..

    One reason Bannon has lasted this long is fear of what he would do to Trump if fired. As LBJ once said, "Better to have the camel inside the tent pissing out, than outside pissing in."
     

    This may be one of the few times Trump will need to be tactful and diplomatic, and avoid the bull in the china shop approach,

     

    1. Doesn't look like it. He's going back to Dead Breitbart, where he's "going to war for Trump against his opponents — on Capitol Hill, in the media, and in corporate America.”

      On a tangentially related note, the compulsion of fat old wingnut white boys for describing their actions as "going to war" never ceases to amuse.

      1. This old fat white boy went to a real war a half century ago.  Personally never heard a shot fired in anger but had friends and family who did.  I think you'll find the rhetorical warriors seldom did the real thing.

      Officially Trump became outraged with Bannon contradicted his responses to Kim and said that there wasn't much we could do to stop the Korean nut case.

  6. On the bright side, replacing Bannon maybe shouldn't be all that difficult . . . 

    . . . DT now has his pick of the litter from all those "very fine people" who just completed their contestant auditions in Charlottesville!

  8. Now that president bannon is gone, who is going to be president?  Kelly? whatsherface, the daughter who sells "made in America"? It can't be the son in law, he is Jewish. Maybe they can find one of their so called secretaries?

    1. The smart money is on General Kelly. At least for a few weeks.

      I’m guessing that in light of events over the past seven days, Rice Prebus doesn’t miss working there anymore.

  11. True story: I was at a  training today, checked my phone, and saw the Bye Bannon news. I squealed, "Bannon was fired!" and looked around to see a circle of blank faces. The two social studies teachers knew what I was talking about, but everyone else was like, "WTF?  Bannon who?"

    Not everyone gets as excited about this stuff as we do. And he's intentionally kept a low profile since being appointed to Trump's staff.

    Now when/ if Gorka goes, too, local people will feel the impact, because he's been on Fox so much talking smack. I hope that's soon.

    Meanwhile…..Yay! Bannon's fired!

    1. And therein you inadvertently point out the problem facing the Dems in the 2018 mid-terms. The vast majority of average Trump voters don't follow any of this political stuff. They're more likely to believe Trump tweets than anything the NY Times, Washington Post, or CNN has to say.

      The Dems were highly complacent in 2016, especially in the three Rust Belt states they expected to win, but ended up losing (all despite BlueCat's continuing protests that Dems were not complacent). I see some of that same complacency beginning to form now, in that "people just have to see" how bad Trump is. No, they don't, and won't, unless Dems come up with a better message.

            You know the kind. It's hunting season. Sees a deer by the side of the road, pulls over, rolls down the window, fires away with multiple hits, and tries to figure out (duh??) why the animal doesn't fall over. Reason is simple: it's a Parks & Wildlife sting.

              Bernie isn't a statue but is certainly old enough to be one. Guess the Bernie assassin worshipped him.

        1. Gorka has a voice meant for talk radio, and that's where he should be. Out on the fringes with Rush and Beck and Jones. Yes, I predict that he's the next one off the island – he has no use except as a propagandist. He can't pass a security clearance because of his Nazi and foreign connections, and nobody can quite figure out what he does in the White House.

    Steve Bannon on Friday declared the Trump presidency as we know it “over.”

    The former White House chief strategist, whose ouster was officially announced Friday afternoon, cast a grim picture of the path forward for President Donald Trump and his staff in one of the first public interviews since exiting the West Wing, while contending that the presidency that had been promised during the 2016 campaign was now long gone.

    “The Trump presidency that we fought for, and won, is over,” Bannon told the conservative Weekly Standard on Friday. “We still have a huge movement, and we will make something of this Trump presidency. But that presidency is over.”

    Bannon’s comments painted a picture of a White House mired in political infighting in the wake of his departure.

    “It’ll be something else,” he said of the Trump presidency, still in its first year. “And there’ll be all kinds of fights, and there’ll be good days and bad days, but that presidency is over.”

    Bannon's Brietbart will train their guns on his enemies still within the White House and probably Congress as well.  His battle to destroy America's hallowed principles and the institutions that support them is just picking up speed.

    I predict his efforts will actually have the opposite effect, causing Americans to look deep within ourselves and realize that hate and bigotry must be met with strength and certainty.  Bannon and his ilk will always be a vocal minority, and their battle for relevance is destined to fail.  Exposure to light always has that effect.

    1. This may be primarily a business decision for Bannon – with the Daily Stormer now erased from the internet, Breitbart can garner more market share of the angry, paranoid white male market.

      When he talks about leading a war "for Trump", he means a war that others will fight and be hurt / jailed / killed in, while his publication just becomes more profitable.

      1. In other news, this may be the most beautiful picture on the interwebs today.  This is what it looks like when a dozen Nazis call for a demonstration – and they are dwarfed by a sea of counter protesters.  

        Poor little snowflakes.

          As of Friday night, the “Fight Supremacy” group had raised more than $34,000.

          The “Boston Free Speech” group, meanwhile, asked on its Facebook page for donations to purchase an audio system for the event. A link to its fundraising website showed just two people had made donations totaling $9. The page was later taken down.

          The outrage toward white supremacists was magnified further following last week’s violence when Trump remarked on Tuesday that both sides were to blame and that there were “very fine people” on both sides. 

          Those “very fine people” were seen carrying torches and chanting Nazi slogans including “Blood and soil!” and “Jews will not replace us!”

          The body politic is finally fending off this latest infection from diseased minds.

          Also important note to those brave bigots and haters everywhere:

          The white supremacist protesters in Charlottesville are now beginning to learn an important lesson: Free speech is not consequence-free. 

          Internet sleuths quickly identified many of them seen in pictures taken during last weekend’s rally. Some of those identified from Charlottesville have lost their jobs. And white supremacist Pete Tefft of North Dakota was disowned by family members after they discovered his involvement.

          Video taken the day of the rally showed one white supremacist scared shirtless as he tried taking off identifying clothes when confronted by counterprotesters.

          “I just came here for the fun, I’m sorry,” he said.

          White nationalist Chris Cantwell was featured on a short but enthralling documentary by Vice about the day’s violence. 

          “We’re not nonviolent,” the self-proclaimed fascist shock jock says in the documentary. “We’ll fucking kill these people if we have to.”

          Cantwell was also seen crying on video, which he said was caused by fear of being arrested over his role in the violent rally.
