House Introduces Health Care Reform, Passage By August?

  • by: Colorado Pols

This just in from The Associated Press:

House Democrats unveiled sweeping legislation Tuesday to overhaul the nation’s health care system.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters the bill is both a starting point and a path to success. She was joined by committee chairmen and other House leaders. They stood before a banner reading “Quality affordable health care for the middle class.”

Pelosi and Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., said the House would pass the bill before the August recess.

The legislation would impose penalties on employers who fail to provide health insurance for their workers and on individuals who refuse to buy it.

President Barack Obama is pushing the House and Senate to vote on bills before their vacation break.

    1. From that same AP article:

It also would allow the government to sell insurance in competition with private firms, a provision that has sparked objections from Republicans and even some Democrats.

It also solves the problem that Bennet was most concerned with: deficit neutrality. Surely the Republicans will have a conniption fit on the tax increase for millionaires, but I don’t see how the people of this country who are struggling right now could have a problem with that.

        1. This is the big target for Republicans, and the details on how it’s getting paid for are going to frighten enough Dems away from it.

I have a steak dinner that this thing doesn’t happen by the recess in August.  And if it doesn’t happen then, it ain’t going to happen before 2010.

            1. My previous experience with these Pols meetups had some bad side effects.  Maybe you could just leave me a gift certificate.

              Plus, I like Elway’s better.

Ok, jobu.  You’re on.  End of year, signed into law.

You’d better pray I win – at least then you’ll have the money to pay off the bet instead of giving to the government.

              1. … is something I can always find.  Anyway, since you mention it, Elway’s downtown is a better option.

I’d rather eat, drink, and argue political philosophy, but I’ll take a gift cert if you’d prefer…  😉

                We’ll see…

BTW, I hate betting on things I really want to happen.  I am pretty sure that I always jinx the Broncos if I make dinner bets, so I probably just ruined it for everyone.  Sorry.
