Trump Sides with Democrats on Debt Limit Plan

We didn’t see that coming.

President Trump is siding with Congressional Democrats on a proposal to extend the debt limit for a few months. As the Washington Post reports:

President Trump confounded leaders from his own party on Wednesday by siding with Democrats on plans to fund the government and raise the debt ceiling, upending negotiations on a variety of crucial policy areas this fall and further damaging relationships with Republicans on Capitol Hill.

Trump made his position clear at a White House meeting with congressional leaders on Wednesday, agreeing with Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) by voicing support for a three-month bill to fund the government and raise the debt ceiling for the same amount of time…

…Republican leaders pushed for a 18 month debt limit hike and then floated doing a six-month extension, according to two aides briefed on the meeting. But Pelosi and Schumer dismissed the six month proposal and Trump then agreed to the three month hike that Democrats put on the table.

Congressional Republicans were hoping to just do one vote on the debt limit that could contain this discussion and prevent multiple different extensions.

  1. I'll bet this is going to go over real well in some quarters…….

Does the Hastert Rule have an addendum that prohibits a Repub president from signing legislation which is enacted with minority support from the GOP coupled with majority support from the Dems?

  2. "It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."   (All that blustering nonsense about debt-ceilings and government-shutdowns.)

Anybody whoever thought that Cheetolini would do anything that might  in any way jeopardize the river-flow of government $$$ into Trump Holdings hasn't paid attention . . .

. . . in Yammy's mind, it might be OK for the US Government to dafault, but there's Russian debt that can't not be repaid.

  3. Paul Ryan is not happy:

“Let's think about this: We’ve got all this devastation in Texas. We’ve got another unprecedented hurricane about to hit Florida. And they want to play politics with the debt ceiling?” Ryan (R-Wis.) said.

    That's MY job!

  4. The Hastert rule should stay named the Hastert rule, to memorialize the only GOP speaker of the house who managed to resign under threat of prosecution for both corruption and pedophilia, or sexual misconduct.

Most GOP leadership only manages to excel in one of those areas.  Hastert was a giant….a giant douchebag.

The sleazy old fart just got out of prison, after serving 13 months on a bank fraud conviction linked to his paying hush money to one of his young victims.
