Obama Still a U.S. Citizen

  • by: Colorado Pols

We’re floored that this is still a story, but apparently critics of President Barack Obama really have nothing better to do:

State officials in Hawaii on Monday said they have once again checked and confirmed that President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii and is a natural-born American citizen, and therefore meets a key constitutional requirement for being president.

Health Director Dr. Chiyome Fukino said she hoped to end lingering rumors about Obama’s birthplace…

…Fukino issued a similar press release Oct. 31, but was prompted to speak out again because of the renewed attention on Obama’s beginnings. Hawaii’s Health Department has been flooded in recent weeks with questions from individuals and several national TV news networks asking for proof that Obama was indeed born in Hawaii.

“They just keep asking over and over and over again,” Health Department spokeswoman Janice Okubo said.

The Constitution states that a person must be a “natural-born citizen” to be eligible for the presidency. Birthers contend that Obama’s birth certificate is a fake, and many say he was actually born in Kenya, his father’s homeland. They’ve challenged his citizenship in court.

One widely circulated YouTube clip of a town hall meeting showed a Republican congressman getting booed for saying Obama is a citizen. Talk show host Rush Limbaugh and CNN’s Lou Dobbs have also raised the issue, and 10 Republican members of Congress co-sponsored a bill that would require future presidential candidates to provide a copy of their original birth certificate.

  1. I don’t recall the details of the laws at hand, but it runs on the order of McCain being born in the Canal Zone and before some law/policy that was enacted to make such kiddies citizens.

There are also matters like registering with the US consulate in foreign countries within a year, but the Canal Zone wasn’t an autonomous nation. (My mother’s parents had to do this in Brazil for most of the kids ca. 1917 and later.)

I think the bottom line is that McCain is a citizen more through custom than law.

And that’s just fine with me, and I think 99.9% of Dems.  But Obama, despite repeated proof of “natural bornness” just can’t keep those idiots at bay.

What is it with ideological Pubs that so love story telling and mythology, no matter the source? Think bible, think El Brushball…

      1. LOL, mtnhigh!

IIRC, Columbia wasn’t warm to the idea of us effectively owning a piece of it for a canal.  So, mysteriously a revolution of the Columbians on the isthmus took place.  How provident!

I wonder how that happened to take place?

  2. or Puerto Rico?

Can someone born in a territory still be US President?  Were any former presidents ever born in a territory that later became a state?

    1. Separate sections handle territories that the United States has acquired over time, such as Puerto Rico (8 USC 1402), Alaska (8 USC 1404), Hawaii (8 USC 1405), the U.S. Virgin Islands (8 USC 1406), and Guam (8 USC 1407). Each of these sections confer citizenship on persons living in these territories as of a certain date, and usually confer natural-born status on persons born in those territories after that date. For example, for Puerto Rico, all persons born in Puerto Rico between April 11, 1899, and January 12, 1941, are automatically conferred citizenship as of the date the law was signed by the President (June 27, 1952). Additionally, all persons born in Puerto Rico on or after January 13, 1941, are natural-born citizens of the United States. Note that because of when the law was passed, for some, the natural-born status was retroactive.

No one has ever been elected born in a territory, but more than a few have run.

  3. State officials in Hawaii on Monday said they have once again checked and confirmed that President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii and is a natural-born American citizen, and therefore meets a key constitutional requirement for being president.

But what is all  the evidence sited in Pols entire quote compared to the body of evidence that supports the birthers’ theory?  According to Gordon Liddy , the  body of evidence they have amassed is…. wait for it… well, they say they have a signed affidavit from Obama’s stepgrandmother in Kenya and… that’s it.

    1. I thought that Corsi guy called some old lady who was Obama’s step-grandmother or something and had a conversation with her through an interpreter, during which she said that she saw Barack Obama born in Kenya.  Later in the conversation, she corrected Corsi and said she did not see Barack Obama born in Kenya, but Corsi glossed over that.

And I hope to God I am wrong, because if this is right, I’ve been paying WAAAAAY too much attention to this nonsense.

      1. Not unlike people’s spiritual religions, for that matter.  And notice how often both overlap in our conservative friends.

Never mind a translator needed and maybe a doddering old woman seeking favor, whether approval by an “important” American, or monetary in some manner.

      2. Sounds like you, Pera, know more about it than he does. I’m sure if Liddy had anything more solid he would have mentioned it.

And now isn’t it funny how all those Rs who wouldn’t say on camera that they accept Obama’s citizenship as fact have voted for a resolution honoring Hawaii on its fiftieth anniversary including noting that President Obama was born there?  It was a 100% vote for.  So, for the official congressional record not a single R wanted to look like a loon but for consumption by the loon base they did want to look like loons. No loss for Ds, no gain for Rs there.
