Front Page Guest Editor Elections Next Week

  • by: Colorado Pols

(Get those nominations submitted in the comments section! Voting starts on Monday – promoted by Colorado Pols)

We’d like to begin by thanking our front page guest editors for the first half of 2010, Middle of the Road and Danny the Red (hair), for their valued contributions over the past few months. This is the most widely read and discussed political blog in Colorado because of our matchless community of politically astute readers–and our guest editors are the best of the best.

We will be holding an election for two new front-page guest editors next Monday, June 21st. The new editors will start on July 1st, and barring anything unexpected will hold their positions through the end of 2010–at which time we’ll have another election. We’ll conduct one poll of nominees, and the top two finishers from that poll will win coveted front page editor spots for the rest of this critical election year. And naturally, our current editors are automatically renominated unless they decline, in keeping with our general view on the deleterious effects of term limits.

To learn more about the privileges and expectations of our guest editors, read this post, and feel free to ask questions.

Use this thread to nominate candidates–you’re free to nominate yourself, of course, and as always we are not aware of any restrictions on campaign spending. Later this week, we will finalize the list of nominees, and explain new procedures for voting intended to prevent abuse.

    1. If soapblox allowed voting to be restricted to only those who had registered before the the election was announced.

But I don’t think it does, so I guess we’re on our honor.

By the way, I nominate V’ger.

          1. I always loved V’s historical POV and add to that V’s perspective now that he can freely express it-great combination.

I like how David lands interviews.

I also like how the west slope guys represent a view I don’t hear much about (Twitty, Ardy, Duke, Ralphie et al).

A wealth of options too numerous to mention.

    1. that you’re an astute judge of appearance, intelligence and writing;-)

are all good looking, intelligent, and your posts are incredibly insightful.

  1. Over the last year, he’s been consistently one of the best posters–fair (but not to a fault) and balanced as a liberal blogger can get. I know he’s been FP editor before, but really, out of the regulars, who hasn’t? If he accepts, I think he would be a fabulous FP’er.

    1. The last couple of years I’ve been just overwhelmed and have declined – this year I’ll accept the nomination.

The last time I was an FP guest contributor we hadn’t yet moved to Soapblox and there were no user diaries…

      1. and for the most part didn’t treat me like an idiot just because you disagreed with me. Also I think you have a more accurate understanding of what is going on politically than most. Sorry to decrease your chances of getting elected. 🙂

  2. of the job, especially in terms of time?

It’s a honor to be nominated, but I always remember Mark Twain’s line about being tarred and feathered and ridden out of town on a rail:

If it wasn’t for the honor of the thing, I’d have rather walked.

      1. is that it doesn’t involve writing so much as reading dairies and promoting the ones worthy of wider readership.  How many times a day did you check the blog?

    1. But the general gist is that you write your own FP diaries as you can, and as you find subject material the Dead Guvs don’t have slotted for their own coverage.  I think I did a diary or two every week – but we didn’t have user diaries to help swell the ranks of FP stories.

Other than that, check the user diaries for stuff that’s worth promoting – there aren’t that many new diaries, and good ones not infrequently sit on the sidebar for half a day before they get promoted, so once or twice per day is probably fine especially with the Guvs and other guest editor helping out.

    2. Trust me. Time management isn’t going to be an issue for you. I checked in frequently (which took minutes at the most) to see if there were diaries that looked ripe for front page promotion. I wrote when I had time.

I would love to see you say yes.

      1. Take that, William T. Sherman!

Seriously, what you guys said is reassuring.  I have been writing more for our law office blog and getting a little cross-promotion by also posting those on this blog with a link to our Blackacre journal. I would assume that would continue to be acceptable.

I might also do some Thielen-style interviews for us.

I do expect to be doing some political work this summer/fall (have already done a bit for Bennet) and assume that’s acceptable, though it is also a reason to keep the “Voyageur” label for this posts, keeping a thin veil of deniability so Sen. Bennet isn’t embarassed by my occasional rhetorical excesses.

When I left the Denver Post, I had a one-year no-compete clause as part of my settlement, and it included blogs, so I obviously didn’t want to do anything like this.

Thank you for your kindness.  BTW, are you interested in another term?

        1. Some advice: if a particular piece you write has something to do with political work you’re doing, put up a disclaimer to remove doubt.  Or just forward your scoop onto the Guvs or other guest editor and have them do the write-up so that your potential bias doesn’t enter in to the post.

          1. I don’t expect to be paid for the political work but if, for example, writing something about Bennet/AR would mention that I was a Bennet delegate (the only thing I’ve done so far, though I expect to do a bit more and also hope to help Cary Kennedy when the time comes.

        2. ARe you outed or not.  I don’t want to be banned forever because I thought you were and you weren’t….

Would like to see you as editor…..but I also like PR, David and Middle of the Road…

            1. albeit only in quest of plausible deniability.

It’s no big secret, but I decided to come back under the nome de blog so I don’t embarrass any political figures I may work for.

    1. I am around but recent employment required lurking only.

That’s over now (no campaign or direct political work, but the boss didn’t want me posting political stuff) but I can think of several posters who would be better.

      Echo R36.

      Also- “rogue staffer.”

  3. They aren’t trolls, they write a lot, they have strong views that are kind of outside the mainstream here (which is a good thing), and their posts/diaries typically get lots of discussion going. Although I think we’ve never had a bad FP editor as long as I’ve been here, the ideal thing to me seems to be to have someone whose views wouldn’t otherwise be represented by the site hosts.

    StrykerK2 and H-man: a choice, not an echo! 🙂

        1. Thanks.  I have had some time on my hands and very much enjoy doing this and your interaction but I hope to be swamped by some business picking up in July and I may not be able to do this justice.  Perhaps we can revisit this in another 6 months when I have done this longer and have a better handle on my time constraints.  I appreciate your kind thoughts.

    1. And they aren’t trolls, but they’re verging on shills for Buck and Romanoff. I can think of a lot of people who would make better editors who share the qualities you described, and who didn’t just show up out of nowhere to shill for a candidate when primary season started.

      1. in the style of hey I support this guy and here is why rather than trying to pretend he is just some disinterested third party.

If you readily admit you are shilling that should take some of the sting out of it, yes ?  (with a caveat that your candidate’s campaign isn’t the only thing you post about).

        1. I agree that H-man makes cogent posts–Stryker as well–they’re not Libertads or

If we’re going to elect shills (even disclosed shills), why don’t we just let the campaigns FP their press releases? I don’t want someone who’s beholden to a particular campaign having the powers of guest FP editor.

There are plenty of real people–people who have been here for longer than 5 months or so–who have the same strong opinions, who write just as well, and aren’t people sent here with an agenda. I think FP editor should be a reward for someone who really adds to the discourse of the site, not just a platform for talking point memo fodder.

          1. I can see what you’re saying.

I just kind of hope we don’t have to wait around for campaign season just to get some viewpoints from the “other side” that are actually coherent.

            1. At least you know what you’re getting with him. That’s more than I can say for the people who show up and instantly start stumping for their employer candidate.

  4. Put Wade on the poll, and he will get my vote.

I know that he has a different viewpoint on the Senate primary then the editors, but (A) that can be a good thing, and (B) I know he would promote the thoughtful posts on any issue where the author put some effort behind them.

    1. But I think it should be a regular contributor to the site–in fairness, Wade used to post more–rather than someone who uses it as a platform to cross-post everything.

If it ain’t an AR/MB thread, Wade cannot be found in the comments. If you’re looking for a Romanoff voice, then I can think of a lot of people who are regular posters and commenters. DukeCo1 and The Realist come to mind.

Nothing against Wade, I just think it’s an odd choice of nominee.

      1. And thanks for considering me but I am also equivocal as to whether I would be the right person.  I think David’s posts are fair and he is very introspective and to the extent that I come at things from a different point of view, I respect his and he is respectful of mine.

    1. Old Stewwebb was a spammer

and he sure loved to slime.

      He never drank water

      He always drank wine.

        The liberals crucified him

on a real cross of gold.

And the crap that he posted

        very quickly got old.

      Well I posted on SquareState

      and I posted on pols

      If I’d posted on stewwebb

I’d be a whack job today.

    1. Sorry you didn’t make the ballot. But your political activism and participation here on Pols is very much appreciated.

We need more people to get involved, no matter what their political persuasions are . That’s what its all about.

      1. I agree – I’m proud to help blaze the trail in candidates/politicians being more open and starting more dialogues directly with the people – granted, it’s gotten me burned at times, but the overall benefit heavily outweighs the bad moments

Thank you for your kind words too – I was shocked we didn’t make it, but new doors open – many opportunities with my film directing career, so fingers crossed 🙂

    2. Although it’s quite an honor to be mentioned and nominated in the same breath as GoldenEye, I think I’m going to pass this time. There are too many solid candidates, and I don’t want to muddy the waters.

Seriously though, it’s an honor to be nominated. Thanks.

  5. Front Page Editor Line:

    (top two win)

    Voyageur (2-1)

He’s got the name rec, things looking good… for now.

    Phoenix Rising (4-1)

He’s done the job before, knows what it takes. But can he raise the money?

    David Thielen (5-1)

Former FP’er, but recent Bennet delegate controversy may hurt him.

    Republican 36 (6-1)

Has the $, but needs something more…

    Ali Hasan (9-1)

Has a secret plan to win election. Whatever that means.

    StrykerK2 (9-1)

World cup coinciding with FP election propels name rec due to heavier use of word “Striker”.

    H-Man (9-1)

Buck is the flavor of the week, but will Norton-lovers let bygones be bygones?

    Bjwilson83 (10-1)

He knows what you are, but what is he?

    Danny the Red (hair) (OFF)

    Middle of the Road (OFF)

    Want to pass the torches.

      1. I want to know why Doug Lamborn isn’t on his “Line.” Is he afraid of the truths Doug says aloud? Is he trying to suppress Doug’s name ID?

    1. Ali Hasan’s 70-page manifesto on reforming Colorado Pols’ front page. No more ads from bailout companies! No more promotions for bailout diaries!

    2. But it’s not really about the money, it’s about the grassroots support.  I pledge to forgo all PAC and corporate contributions, and you’ll all have direct access to editor’s office should I be elected.  I also pledge to make as many public appearances as I can throughout my district; we can all sit down and have a beer together so I can listen to what each of you has to offer.  (Speaking of which, we need to schedule another get-together sometime…)

          1. We’ve done quite a few. One in Boulder, and at least three or four in Denver.

The last one we did was at the Wynkoop Brewery (Hickenlooper’s former business), where about two dozen regulars showed up. I don’t think any conservative has ever gone to one except for Laughing Boy. (I could be wrong though.)

Obviously everyone who attends one of these things is obligated to respect the anonymity of the posters s/he meets. So far this has not been a problem.

I agree that we should do another one soon.

    3. Also, I think we should do primaries. 🙂 Voyageur, Phoenix Rising, David Thielen, and StrykerK2 on the left; Republican36, Ali Hasan, and me on the right (H-man is off).

  6. would you have the time?  I think it is important that there is a conservative voice on here.

sxp151- Thank you; I’m flattered.  I would be happy to be on the ballot.  I do favor elections…including primaries 😉

Redstateblues — you may be surprised with what I would actually frontpage.  My Colorado political interests are not limited to one race; I know you think I’m just some campaign shill, but I think you would be rather surprised.  Fortunately anonymity exists for a reason.  We may even agree from time to time.

I also think Davidthi808 would be a good choice.

      1. if you weren’t an overweight unpopular kid who lives in your parent’s basement after you couldn’t get a job in politics.

But hey — you can be a big and fierce as you want on the internet.  Roar.

        1. You ARE in campaign mode now, Stryker. Gotta be nice to everybody. You want to avoid false comparisons between RSB and bjwilson83 first of all.

          1. at some point you figure out who will vote for you, who might vote for you, and who would never vote for you.  Somehow I doubt RSB would vote for me regardless given his/her comments.

Your point is well taken though.  Thanks.

    1. Bennet is a shitty human being.

If you aren’t a shill — and a loose cannon who does more harm than good to Romanoff — how can you justify writing things like that?

This is a serious  question and I’d appreciate an answer.  You wrote that Sen.

Bennet is a shitty human being.

And you have the gall to run for Front Page Editor?

    2. .

I mostly just come here to stir the pot, get folks riled up.  And my overbearing religious hypocrisy wears a little thin after a while.

No, my role here is to snipe and exaggerate and occasionally tell an outright lie.  I wrongly assume that my lies are so transparent that everyone knows they are blatant falsehoods, but as the diary on Romanoff’s news conference to announce he was quitting the race shows, I sometimes don’t “get” this audience.

Maybe if I grow up a lot in the next 6 months I could run for FPE in January.

      Thanks for the mention.

  7. here who I think would do a great job. Rsb, Phoenix, V-ger (love that), MOR, Gilpin Guy, and so many others, but I vote for David and SSG/Dan.

    1. Can the winners do me a favor and not immediately front-page all of the drivel diaries written by Jason Salzman????

      Pretty Please??

      Denver Broncos… Still Suck!

        1. I would bet everyone who wants to read everything Progress Now writes is already on their mailing list, but they get front-paged no matter what.

          1. I’m not sure what you are basing that on, because according to my page:

            http://www.coloradopols.com/us

Six of my last ten blogs were never promoted, including one I put up Friday that I do wish had been as it’s a good story. I don’t think my ratio of promoted posts is better than anybody else’s. Which is not to say I didn’t think that they all were worth promoting, but it would not statistically appear that I’m anybody special.

As always, sorry to put the kibosh on anybody’s conspiracy theory.

              1. George Soros must like you.

And I must say, you refuted your own unfounded perception very skillfully. I think it got started by a rightie who alternates between accusing the Pols of promoting “everything he posts” and “Zzzzzzzz.”

And see? It even worked on you, and based on your promotion rate, you’re wrapped up so tight with the Dead Guvs you squeak.

But there is one abiding truth in all of this, which you may have unintentionally discovered:

      1. I arrived to the banks of the Potomac 15 days ago.  I do plan on returning to Denver a couple of times during the year (or forever if I get a job back there – my home).

Job hunting here is much nicer, there are jobs open here.  I just have a couple of little things to overcome – age and such.

And thanks for the invite. I know it would have been fun!

              1. Try to separate the fact that you don’t agree with Barron from his persona.

He’s a decent, honest guy who believes what he believes, no matter how wrong you and I think he is most of the time.
