POLS UPDATE: In its endorsement of Scott Tipton over Bob McConnell, The Durango Herald said that McConnell’s politics “are off the deep end.”
—–
Already-lost-once candidate (and former state-Rep.) Scott Tipton just got more bad news in his attempt to unseat incumbent 3rd District congressman John Salazar. Half-term former governor Sarah Palin has just endorsed his opponent, Bob “the Cowboy Colonel” McConnell from Steamboat Springs, for the GOP nomination.
H/t to jlightup (who I note just signed up today and posted the linked comment) for pointing me to this story. Excerpts from Palin’s Facebook page follow.
From Sarah Palin’s Facebook page page:
Bob McConnell is considered a grassroots underdog candidate running a dynamic, prudent campaign to represent Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District. Bob sometimes describes himself as a “recovering lawyer,” but that’s just one of his professions. Impressively, he’s a retired Colonel and Airborne Ranger. He’s a husband and the proud father of three and grandfather of seven, and he’s a true American patriot who wants to serve his fellow Coloradans for all the right reasons. Bob knows that in times like these ordinary citizens must be bold and take a stand to return our country back to our Constitutional roots of limited and fiscally responsible government. A decorated combat veteran, Bob is supported by the honorable Combat Veterans for Congress, and was unique in being able to tell a rally crowd at the Pueblo Weisbrod Aircraft Museum that he’s parachuted out of three of the aircraft in that museum! He’s also an avid outdoorsman who climbed Mt. Everest and lived off the grid as a mountain guide for a number of years.
Please join many other concerned Americans in moving the country onto the right path by supporting Bob McConnell.
McConnell–who enjoys widespread Tea Party support–already pulled off an Assembly shocker, coming within a few points of Tipton for top line. Tipton–who lost to Salazar in 2006–is widely distrusted in ‘liberty’ circles as a typical politician, a slur the Cowboy Colonel can easily dodge.
It’s hard to say if Palin’s support can push McConnell over the top, but the GOP 3rd CD Primary is one race to watch to gauge this movement’s ability to tweak the establishment.

something in the SarahBlog that describes McConnell’s qualifications for serving in the US House, or how his positions on important issues differ from Tipton’s.
Nothing.
Wouldn’t be prudent …
Qualificiations include: father, ordinary citizen, outdoorsman, patriot, mountain guide.
I think she’s letting Levi know that all he has to do now is (quietly) get through the “husband” part, and he’s back in her good graces. Who knnows, there might even be a congressional endorsement.
“Someone who agrees with you.”
with one heck of a strong constitution to stomach looking at SP’s facebook page.
Hope you weren’t damaged irreparably in the process ‘Twitty.
It’s probably a bad sign when you start praising your candidate’s “boldness” for accepting your endorsement.
Honestly, of all the major GOP candidates in Colorado, Bob McConnell is one of few to ask me about issues involving Muslims, with the intent of building bridges
I think McConnell is a good man and I would not call his politics “crazy” – he wants to build bridges and that’s a great thing
at best and “un-American” at worst. If you want him to win, better not make that little fact known to his base. It’s pretty pathetic that reaching out to Americans, because they happen to be Muslims, can cost you an election. welcome to the GOP!
Is strongly supporting McConnell. And calling Tipton a RINO every chance they get.
In Grand Junction, Van Gundy has a big McConnell billboard right at the top of the hill overlooking the Fifth Street Bridge. The rest of the year, it’s a John Birch Society billboard about getting out of the UN or going back to the gold standard. He’s as Tea Party as you can get.
Doesn’t matter whether they hear what Ali says, the Tea Party doesn’t like Tipton. Period.
The WS’ Tea Partiers new Axis of Evil.
For some of the flavor…

Read the Durango Herald article. They were referring to McConnell’s fiscal positions, which make Sarah Palin look like a Nobel-prize-winning economist by comparison:
He has a very impressive personal background. But his stated positions on the issues are “not ready for prime time.” They’re simply not RESPONSIBLE.
