POLS UPDATE: 9NEWS reports:

A video posted to YouTube this weekend has gone viral with political outrage after a young woman registering people to vote was recorded saying she worked for the clerk’s office but was only registering people who wanted to vote for Mitt Romney.

The El Paso County Clerk & Recorder on Sunday night issued a statement to clear the confusion on the matter saying the young woman does not work for their office…

9NEWS learned Sunday that the young woman is a volunteer for the Romney campaign. They say she was inexperienced and have since spoke with her.

  1. “Wayne Williams of El Paso County Clerk and Recorder denies that this woman works for him – says she lied on camera. KKTV 11 — in covering this story — says that individual groups can register only Republicans if they want to.”

I’ve been trained by a number of voter reg groups who had a definite progressive agenda, and have trained others, as well. I’ve always been told we had to register anyone who wished to be registered…regardless of affiliation. I don’t know how anyone can say groups can pick and choose! Attorneys?

        1. Hi HGF so here is the problem with that. If someone plays with completed voter registration forms that is serious fraud – it is easy to catch and the penalty is pretty stiff. Remember that these forms have a serial number.

  2. I have registered a lot of voters too. Also for progressive leaning groups. We were told that we had to register anyone who wished. Not surprising if this youngster really does not work for El Paso County Clerk’s office. And I promise I am no attorney.

    1. We certainly weren’t supposed to so much as ask people who they were voting for in the process of encouraging them to register.

Whatever organization is responsible for sending ignorant young people out to survey and then register only people who would vote for a particular candidate, whether it’s the County GOP or the Romney campaign or a citizens group supporting Romney, needs to be tracked down and made to answer for this.

This young lady didn’t dream this up herself. You could probably fit what she knows about elections into a thimble with plenty of room left over.  Clearly this is what whomever she is working for told her to do. She ought to come clean and name whoever trained her.

  3. do you suppose some #RWNJ will say that union thugs chased this poor girl, prevented her from doing her patriotic duty to save the US from [shudder] another four years? Here in Larimer County Safeway workers are union members. Is that the same in the Springs?

    1. she’s a liberal plant. Just like the excuse for every ridiculously stupid Tea Party sign.

FWIW, her hesitation tells me she doesn’t work for the CC, but for an outside group she’s not supposed to name. I always ask petition pushers if they are volunteer and then who they work for. I’ve never gotten a straight answer unless it’s a volunteer, they always tell me what group they are with. Like that’s what I asked.

    1. is going to see that “GOP” as “DEM.” Hope you’re happy when the touring starts on that. He’ll save America and your tax dollars! <–Way less for Homeland to investigate.

  4. if she had any class.

She led the young girl to say the wrong thing.  Maybe type out a transcript so you can follow what actually happened.

And the idea that a Dem registration drive would register Republicans ?

    Yeah, I believe that.

    1. The organization that hired this young woman should fire their trainer/recruiter. The videotaping shopper led the girl to conclude she worked for the county.

No fraud here, just a confused girl who wanted to be part of the process.

      Take a breath everyone.

      1. The members of whatever organization sent this young person out with rule violating instructions are the only ones who ought to be ashamed.  The clueless girl doesn’t know any better and the woman who took the video saw something very wrong happening and did us all the service of documenting it. She had to ask the questions she did to have it on record. No surprise the girl was incorrect in her answer about whom she was working for but she’s working for someone and that someone and the organization behind that someone need to be exposed.

    2. . . . at least it is for those who don’t refuse to believe what they see.

Get out there with your video cam and get us some proof of your assertion . . . or, believe what you want — it’s easier, that way.

    3. and with a group of folks who I assume to be D and U we are registering regardless of anything a registrant may say about who they intend/expect to vote for.

Sorry, Barron, fairness is a D virtue

    4. And I’ve only done voter registration hours like, twice in my life. I canvass more often than I register.

Of course, I may be less explicitly partisan than some, being sympathetic to third parties personally… but the fact is, I’ve always been trained that you do not even attempt to determine how someone will be registering when inviting them to do so.

That said, you may have something of a point about the video — I haven’t watched it yet, forgot my headphones and I’m at work. I can believe that a confused vol thought she was working for the county. But I agree with Car31 that the org that hired her needs to fire their trainer. She absolutely should not have been taught to register people selectively, and she absolutely should have been given a scripted response to questions about who she worked for.

      1. I registered a guy that dutifully filled out the entire form, tore it in half lengthwise and handed it to me. He told me he was a fascist and didn’t believe in democracy. I turned the registration in anyway.

    5. Too bad for the young lady but what she is doing at her trainer’s behest is wrong.  This isn’t an attack on the ignorant girl but on those who sent her out with these improper instructions. Going through her to get to them is perfectly legit. Many thanks to the woman who recorded this video and I hope an investigation will uncover the responsible organization.

And as a Dem who has worked on many Dem registration drives I can tell you that while we try to set up in places where demographics are in our favor we are carefully instructed not to mix registration with campaigning or canvassing because it simply isn’t allowed. We register everyone we encounter who wants to register and do not ask them for whom they plan to vote. You may find that unbelievable but that doesn’t make it any less true.

    6. I’ve done canvassing and voter reg in less than Obama /Bennet friendly neighborhoods.

But when asked who I was working for and what I was doing there, I answered honestly.

She led the girl to say- I’m here doing voter reg, and anyone can register for anyone.  Oh, wait – that’s not what the young lady said at all.

What happened was pretty obvious – on the way in the young lady was doing voter reg, on the way out she was doing “polling” and acknowledged they were only registering Romney supporters.  Williams might or might not be telling the truth- but someone had to sign off that they trained this woman how to do voter reg.  He should find out who.

  5. She said what she was doing, held her hand up to the camera at one point, then said her name, but it was bleeped out.  I wouldn’t be surprised if she isn’t in one of New Life’s youth groups, or possibly a Mormon.  Gullible and disingenuous, she must think she’s a warrior for Willard.

More detail on the story, and this additional comment:

But according to [El Paso County Clerk Wayne] Williams, pre-screening voters with preference questions isn’t against the law. “You don’t have to offer a voter registration form to everybody,” he says.

However, denying someone a form based on their survey answers is illegal, which it seems the woman behind the camera thought was going on.

Is Williams right about pre-screening questions? Regardless, it sounds like coaching your team how to tilt the field.

    1. from the same story?

It turns out pre-screening voters isn’t something the Democrats do when gathering registrations, making the woman with the camera think something illegal was happening. “I know for a fact the campaign office is not going out and prescreening the people that are registering. They will set up a table with an Obama sign but they don’t ask you who you’re voting for before you register.”

Maybe the fact that Dems insist on higher standards of ethics from their trainers and volunteers doesn’t surprise me because

      1) all of the actual successful prosecutions for dirty tricks I’ve heard about so far this century have involved R perps doing things such as jamming Dem phone lines set up for people seeking rides to polls.

and 2) When my son was a young naive campus Dem volunteer for the Kerry campaign(he quickly got upped to a supervisory position for pay) he was never instructed nor did it it ever occur to him or any of his volunteers to do anything sneaky but the campus Young Republicans were so full of dirty tricks the Dem kids had to spend the last weeks of the campaign mainly cleaning up after all the R’s purposely distributed misinformation to keep Dems from polls. Either the R kids came up with it on their own or were instructed to conduct the misinformation campaign.

I have seen zero evidence of superior “family values” like teaching  good morals,  ethics and the value of honesty, integrity and fair play to the GOP young. Quite the opposite.
