From Daily Kos:

This story

http://blogs.westword.com/cafe…

circulated by Westword has gotten a local Restaurant which happens to be Mexican and Mormon into the scopes of all the crazies across the country….

The Mormon owners of a Mexican cafe in Denver say that they have gotten death threats, hate calls and fake orders after refusing to allow Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney to make campaign stop at their restaurant.

“One person who called said, ‘Watch your back. We know where live and we’re going after you,'” Oscar Aguirre, the son of the owners of Rosa Linda Mexican Cafe, told KMGH New Media Producer Wayne Harrison. “We just didn’t want our business used as a campaign stop.”

more below….

http://www.thedenverchannel.co…

He said many callers [who made harassing or threatening phone calls] believe Rosa Linda refused to serve Romney because of a story in [Westword, the local paper] that said Romney “wasn’t invited” to eat at the restaurant.

“That’s not true,” he said. “We just didn’t want our business used as a campaign stop.”

Aguirre, who is Mormon and whose parents are Mormon, was contacted on Aug. 6 about a possible campaign stop by Romney. […]

“It was presented to us that (Romney) wanted to do a political stump here. (He wanted to) talk about our small business (and) because we share our religious views with the candidate and are Latinos it would be great for him to do a campaign stop,” Aguire said. “We did say ‘no’ because we are not Republicans, nor are we Democrats. We will welcome any sitting President of the United States. But, we did not want to be a campaign stop.”

In addition to death threats, Aguirre said the family-run restaurant has had to deal with canceled orders and reservations. […]

“Since the Westword article came out, hate mail has been coming in from people across the country — people sending us death threats and people calling us telling us we are racist — that they hope we go out of business,” he said.

“Last year, we fed 5,500 free meals (video below). This year, we may serve above 6,000 free meals. Please let the American public know that we are not racist or bigots. We are just a working family wanting to help our community and our country by serving those in need,” he said, adding, “Please stop the hate.”

For those of you concerned that a local eatery who chose to be a-political in an election year – which many businesses must do in order to follow the (hated) advice of never talking about religion or politics, and whom now are being targeted with death threats and loss of business, would you please buy a gift certificate and show them that being a-political is not a crime?

  1. But what really pisses me off is glaring silence of local Republican leaders. You say you’re for for small business? You say you’re for religious liberty? You say you’re for freedom of speech?

Then stand up against the ignorant hateful jackasses of your party. If you don’t, then I can only assume that you support their actions.

    1.

glaring silence of local Republican leaders.

speaks more truthfully than anything they DO say. The hatefulness and anger are displayed daily by the rank and file of the GOP, and accepted fully by republican leadership. Remember…that stew of elitist arrogance and racist hatred is seasoned with the approval of the goons at the top.

They rose from the ranks of the vile because they are the most greedy and hateful of the bunch. And they know they must nurture that hatred or the rabid dogs will turn on them.

This behavior is revolting. Will any GOP leader speak against it?  Tick…tick…

    2. I ask everyone to support Oscar during this tough time. Don’t let the narrow minded bastards influence anything. In the article, he says he doesn’t need this because he’s getting ready for Thanksgiving.  What he does, every year, for Thanksgiving is sets up an assembly line production of meal prep so volunteers from the neighborhood can deliver meals to those less fortunate.

If that is the kind of small business that deserves death threats and poor reviews, than there is something very wrong with the world today.

      1. As someone who has worked as a dreadful ‘Community Organizer’ in the past, I have done lots of work with small businesses.

AS anyone with any scruples or morals (or tactical sense) knows, you DO NOT want to jeopardize supportive businesses good standing in their community–which would defeat the purpose of organizing their support.

  2. I’m sometimes in a store or restaurant and there will be a sign “We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason”. I have pointed out that’s actually against the law since they don’t have the right to refuse service to someone because they’re black, Hispanic, etc.

However, AFAIK the law doesn’t apply to politicians.

  3. As a long term (more than 20 years) customer of Rosa Linda’s restaurant, and one who considers the family there to be my friends, I must say that they are the true American Dream.  Immigrants who came here, are self supporting, have raised a great family, most of whom still work in the business.

Additionally, their generosity in the surrounding community is well recognized.  I am with many of the other commenters here, where is the outcry from the rethugs regarding this rediculous, racist approach to putting these wonderful people out of business?

  4. direct calls and threats.  Willard’s GOPers have been all over Yelp and other restaurant rating sites this past week spreading all sorts of vicious lies and bad reviews.
